also, how did sheriff of new bern know about johnstons death? he offered jake consolation on the radio.

I imagine some of his men had binoculars and could see Johnston was shot. I don't know how they knew Johnston died. Depending on the terrain, perhaps a scout got close enough to see Gail Green show up. Anyone from the military want to chime in about this?

I would say he had eyes on with a scout or a spotter. If they were going to lob motar rounds in they probably had a spotter with a scope. So that individual or individauals most likely saw it and reported it to their Chaion of Command
