I’ve made a few additional changes in order to attempt to solve some issues people have raised.
The first is that I’ve made the Where Are They faster and smarter. The result is that is should update and where people actually are.
I’ve put in another round of changes to the forums setup. Those of you having issues please give it another shot or three. As the problems were often intermittent, it may mean that even if you get it to work on the first try it might fail again.
These are the issues which affect the forums:
Database offline: This does appear to happen every day when the database backups are done. You can tell when the database is offline as instead of getting a page which looks like the website you get a page which is simply white with a black error message.
Database slow: I suspect they ISP is overloading their databases somewhat. I suspect this because the web server constantly tests well and a slow database most accurately explains any slowness on the site.
Forum software: The problem may ultimately lie with the forum software. However, with the percent reporting problems here I would expect to see other sites running the software complaining. This is why I’ve taken the task of setting the forum page in as standard a configuration as possible. I’ve removed the flash elements and simplified the page in several other aspects. |
