JKI has had a request to participate in a survey by a Masters student at UCLA (Cinema and Media Studies). The student is writing a paper about the impact of fan participation culture on Jericho.

Please send your responses to mzuo@ucla.edu by November 24th. Here are the questions:

1. How did you start watching Jericho? (Did the commercials seem interesting? What did friends say about the show?)

2. How quickly did you become attached to the show? What kept you interested?

3. Did any characters or plotlines grow on you as time progressed?

4. What are some of your high points of the show? Low points?

5. Does Jericho relate to your life personally? How so?

6. If you could change anything about the show, what would it be?

7. What drew you to online discussions of Jericho?

8. Please describe the community of online Jericho fans.

9. If you had 10 minutes to meet with a producer face-to-face, what would you say?

10. What would make you stop watching Jericho, if anything?

11. Is CBS doing enough to keep you interested in the show using their website?

12. What do you like about the CBS Jericho website and how could they improve upon it?

13. What do other Jericho fans bring to your own appreciation?

14. Is there ever a sense that some fans play a larger role than others? Please elaborate.

15. What have you done to participate in Jericho fandom?

Thanks for posting this

I just filled out and emailed this survey. I actually kinda enjoyed taking it, since it allowed me to reflect on what brought us all together!

I thought I’d post my survey online so people could see what I posted. No one else should feel obligated to do the same.

I tend to think literally and vague questions don’t get good answers from me. Frankly, I’ve never met a survey I liked.

1. How did you start watching Jericho? (Did the commercials seem interesting? What did friends say about the show?)

Best I can recall, I decided to watch it due to its synopsis.

2. How quickly did you become attached to the show? What kept you interested?

Right after Jake Green gave his second contradictory answer to where he had been.

3. Did any characters or plotlines grow on you as time progressed?

Stanley Richmond, Jimmy, and Gracie Leigh. I tend to like the small side plot lines and those rarely if ever get developed. I’m much more interested in how individuals cope than the ‘conspiracy’, though I like Robert Hawkins.

4. What are some of your high points of the show? Low points?

Pretty much anything with Hawkins is a high point. I also really liked Gracie Leigh. Low point, the resolution of the New Bern situation.

5. Does Jericho relate to your life personally? How so?

No relation that I know of, other than I think I do well in emergency situations.

6. If you could change anything about the show, what would it be?

Greater focus on smaller stories. Where are the stories about not having food to feed pets? Where are the quirky small petty crimes? What trouble are the kids getting into and where are the other kids.

7. What drew you to online discussions of Jericho?

Friend.

8. Please describe the community of online Jericho fans.

Works well when they have a well-defined task.

9. If you had 10 minutes to meet with a producer face-to-face, what would you say?

Don’t you have a better place to be? Have any photos for the fans?

10. What would make you stop watching Jericho, if anything?

Lots of small unmarked bills. Want my address? It is possible that should the series have a long life and start focusing overly on the national plotline I might start getting bored. On the other hand can’t say I’d be bored with a different direction until I see their take on things.

11. Is CBS doing enough to keep you interested in the show using their website?

Doing enough? Let me ask you, is CBS doing anything with their website? As far as I know CBS hasn’t really added new content to the site in some time. There is SeanMac’s blog, but that isn’t something that is from CBS. There were a couple of entries about the DVD release. While such things are new content, the boards have a general feel of being abandoned.

12. What do you like about the CBS Jericho website and how could they improve upon it?

Off season shouldn’t be viewed as the time to ignore a show and its fans. A show’s budget should include the regular release of on-line material even when a show is between seasons.

13. What do other Jericho fans bring to your own appreciation?

They often bring up aspects of the show that I missed or had not considered.

14. Is there ever a sense that some fans play a larger role than others? Please elaborate.

No. Fan support is the only real role of a fan. The phrase ‘true-fan’ is silly. Someone likes the show or doesn’t like the show. People may play different roles, but larger is simply a term of judgment. Some fans spend more effort and or more time than others, this does not mean they get better results.

15. What have you done to participate in Jericho fandom?

I work with a non-profit formed to support the fan effort for Jericho. I help them with graphics, their website, and programming.

I filled out the survey and sent it via e-mail to the student at UCLA. I like to help people, so this was a great opportunity to do so. Thank you.
