A new Jericho puzzle game.

I put together a small puzzle game.

[UPDATE 9/2/2009] I noticed a small bug was having the days left count up rather than count down. This should be fixed now and reflect 4 days left for this date. The questions and unscrambling proceeds quickly from this day on.

The puzzle is a distorted image (like rippling water) that on each of the next few days will become a bit clearer until in a few days the image will be fully revealed.

While the puzzle works now, neither today or tomorrow will reveal much of anything. This should give people a couple days to see this post and have time to play if they want to.

Once the puzzle starts revealing, questions will appear at the bottom of the puzzle. Please post your quesses in this thread.

NOTE: We're doing this to get an idea of the type of Jericho themed games we should develop in the future. It is very helpful for any feedback, including negative feedback (we don't want to spend time making games if they're not enjoyable). It is also very important that people let us know if there are problems using the software to make these games (we won't know if you don't tell us).

NOTE ON Silverlight: This game requires a 'Silverlight' plug-in. Silverlight is a plug-in that in many ways is very much like the Flash plug-in you more than likely already have installed on your machine. We have opted to use Silverlight over Flash as it better integrates with the webplatform we use and for business reasons we can more easily justify spending time creating games in Silverlight than in Flash. While there is always some theoretical risk involved in installing plug-ins, this plug-in is maintained by Microsoft and installs from their servers. This is about as safe as any software will ever be.

High-speed connection: Unfortunately if you do not have a high-speed connection the Silverlight plug-in will not be pratical for you to install.

I don't know what it is, but it sure is a pretty image.

Can't wait for the clues.

I got a question today and it wants to know what the sign in the reflection says.

I see a yellow square and a red square in the upper left corner, but I can't read what they say.

It could be the "Don't Tread on Me Flag", since it looks like a brick building is near it.

Could the red be the street sign?

Could the image be from the Jericho street set?

I'll have to go and check out the street set photos. There is some on the gallery (under Jericho Telegraph menu).

Maybe the sign reads, "Only you can prevent forest fires?"

I wasn't trying to make the puzzle hard or frustrating, but I can see that giving a couple of days for people to stumble across the thread and several more for the reveal could get frustrating. Hopefully they'll be a bit of a feeling of discovery or some sort of Aha moment when you figured things out. Maybe we should call this game 'Eureka!'?

I wanted to ask the questions before the answers were visually obvious. I am shooting for the question to go up a day before I thought most people could solve it, but that's always a bit of guesswork since I know what is in the photo. The "What is the person on the left holding" question is probably one of the harder questions. I think by tomorrow or the day after you'll be able to make out the answer "There is a reflections, what does the sign being reflected read".

For the regular version of the game I think it might work like this: You'd push start and a random image would pop up and you'd get asked a single question and then the image would start to reveal. The sooner you picked the right answer the more points you'd get. You'd lose points or get no points for guessing incorrectly.

I felt that it will be some time before I can get to working on social games due to the other work the site needs done first, but I also want some fun things happening on the site from time to time. By 'social games' I mean games more than one person can play at a time (either at the same time or by taking turns). Ideally, I'd like to build in a couple games into the chatroom or a game we can play on this site, but could also be posted and played on say Facebook.

These smaller 'mini-games' like this one help me think though what is possible, what works or doesn't work, and helps me test ideas to find ways we can push the website to deliver something a bit different than other websites.

Admin, it's not frustrating at all, it's fun!

I like the timed version you you're proposing, that sounds like fun too.

You know what might be a fun social game? Something like letting your posters pick a puzzle piece and put it in the puzzle one post at a time, or something like that... :)

Oh and by the way, it's not Smokey the Bear, it's Yogi - (really, it DOES look kinda like Yogi)!! The person on the left is holding a pic-i-nic basket?

Seriously, I think the person on the left is Jake holding a gun?

Okay, I've id'd Jake and Major Beck so far, the others still have me a little confused. And I think the sign got a little fuzzier!

(Oh yeah, and Yogi is still there) :)

Okay, I see Jake, someone in army fatigues who I assume is Beck, and someone in what looks like a suit - blue shirt sticking out above the jacket.

I can't make out what anyone is holding, but I see something that looks like an upside down ice cream cone ????

I still see the red and yellow signs but can't read them.

I see Yogi when I don't have my glasses on

It is a bit hard to automate taking turns on the forums. The forums are sort of their own country within the website. The website is aware of the forums and can do things like search in the website and the forums at the same time, but other than a couple of other things like authentication ( you log into the site and don't have to log into the forums separately), profiles, and email things are pretty separate.

I am sure this is why on most forums you have people manually playing games, often with someone doing updates. Ideally I wish the forum software could be opened up so that games could work a bit like polls.

I told Gwen earlier that I may have figured out a possible way to break the forums to make them a bit more flexible, but that seemed like a poor choice of words and I think I panicked her a bit. I probably should have said I may be able to cheat the software a bit and outsmart the forums to give us some more flexibility.

I like the puzzle idea, I had in the back of my head something a bit similar but with playing 'Hangman'. We have the Jericho flavored hangman game in the game section and that could be added to the new (yet to be created) chatroom and possibly here. Ideally, the chatroom would have a few games (and it will be far easier to add games to the chatroom.

One of the reasons I like discussing my process is that I often get new ideas doing so. For instance, maybe I'm thinking of this backwards? Maybe I should just try to find a way to get the chatroom into posts and then put any games in the chatroom?

Okay. I finally get what you mean about Yogi..you mean shape of face right?

Games in the chatroom would be a great idea, I especially like the hangman idea, that would be fun. I'm a puzzle person anyway so I'd probably be in there playing the games and chatting to myslef if no one else was there!! (Does this mean I need a shrink??? :) )

The red streak isn't part of the sign. The sign is in yellow and black. Can you make out what is in his hands now? Also, if your browser supports it you can enlarge it. In Internet Explorer 8 on the bottom right side it normally says 100% you can enlarge to 150% or 200% for a better view. In Firefox you go to Menu View then Zoom.
