Loki just turned 15 in January, and last week I found out she has lymphoma. I'm now waiting for the tests results to tell me what type of cancer cell, so the best chemotherapy drugs can be ordered.

She has an 84% chance of going into remission after treatment. The remission usually lasts at least a year.

I've been concerned that she isn't strong enough to do this type of treatment, but in my reading I realized that her weakness may be directly related to the lymphoma.

She's still so full of life just very weak and tired.

Please keep her in your thoughts.

Just found out that the cancer is cell type B, the less aggressive type. The vet is waiting for her third drug to come in and then she starts treatment.

I'm hoping this won't be too hard on her.

Loki handled her first treatment fairly well. She hasn't been sick, but she has slept a lot and has decided that hand fed food is better than what is in her food dish.

Since she has to take a lot of pills, this means hand feeding her dinner. Fortunately she likes hot dogs, which cut up are easy to stuff her pills into.

Friday is another treatment - please keep your fingers crossed that she does okay.

I'm glad to hear Loki's treatment went pretty well.  Now is definitely a good time to baby her.  Hand-feeding is more work, but it's worth it if that's the only way to get them to eat.  Hopefully her second treatment won't be as rough for her.

The first two treatments went well, but the next ones didn't and I had to make the difficult decision to end Loki's life last night. She's in a better place now and is free of pain.

Farewell dear friend, my sweet loving dog, who brought me so much joy and happiness. I know that you are in some beautiful meadow enoying being able to run again.

Rest in peace, Loki.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.  It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.  Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.  There is always food and water and warm spring weather.  The old and frail animals are young again.  Those who are maimed are made whole again.  They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing.  They are not with their special person who loved them on earth.  So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.  The nose twitches.  The ears are up.  The eyes are staring.  And this one suddenly runs from the group.

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace.  Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

I just wanted to thank all of you for the kind words.

Since I don't have children, Loki and my rats are like my children and Loki's loss  hit me very hard.

I did make a wonderful discovery two days ago. I clicked on a picture of Loki on my computer and found out it was a short video of her with sound.

I really didn't think I had any sound recordings of Loki. She was a very vocal dog and used to sing when she wanted something. Lucky we managed to get her to sing on cue and caught it on the recording.

Dear Gwen:

You already know how much I was saddened by Loki's passing.  It is a heartache that never goes away, it only softens with time.  Loki was special and is in that place I call heaven.  I know there is a place for all of our beloved animals or God would not have made them in the first place.
