Niki is my new dog.

I got her about two weeks after Loki died. She looks a little like Loki, since they are both Australian Cattledogs, but she is quite different.

She doens't have the problems that Loki did. Loki had seperation aniexty and was fearful of children. In a way this has caused some problems socializing Niki, since I tend to expect her to react as Loki does and I've sent some mixed messages.

Niki is a very picky eater and that is taking some getting used to. I've found a kibble that she likes, but the amount and the best feeding time we are still working on.

Niki doesn't play with toys. She instead makes Niki bits. Anything you give her gets torn into small pieces, which are then played with. This doesn't seem to be just puppy chewing, but who knows she may grow out of it.

We are still getting used to each other, but she has filled the void that Loki left.

I finally got a picture of Niki up on the web:

Niki has the same colorings as Loki, but she is smaller, has a wider face, a shorter nose, and only has a knob for a tail.

Niki took an unauthorized trip to the creek this afternoon.

After several minutes of frantic calling her back she decided to return to the top of the trail. She came home very wet and full of mud.

The frantic calling was hard on my throat, which has not recovered from being sick all last week.

Niki ran out the front door today. I ran after her and caught her across the street. I grabbed her by her hips and carried her back across the street upside down. She was very embarrassed to be carried that way, and even more frustrated since she could not get away.

I don't think she will rush out the door again, since she didn't like the way I carried her back.

Well I won't be picking Niki up by her hips again!

I finally found out what is wrong with her hind leg. It is NOT attached to the socket, so it can easily get dislocated. It is also 3/4 of an inch shorter than the other leg. It's no wonder she pulls it up at times.

It's kind of ironic that I tried to get a younger dog, so I didn't need to deal with so many medical problems. Unfortunately, this young dog came with medical problems. Oh well, Loki had behaviorial problems which were much harder to deal with.

At least you were able to figure out what the problem was.  I agree that physical problems are usually easier to deal with than behavioral problems.  Are you going to see if anything can be done to help Niki's leg?

I took Niki to the chiropractor that was able to help Loki stay mobile. Unfortunately, he said the only thing I can do is keep Niki active and let her develop the muscles that will hold the leg in place. I have to be careful of how she lands after jumping down, since she could easily dislocate the right hind leg.

Niki has no fear, so it's hard to control her when she wants to jump down. She leaped out of the van by jumping over my shoulder and out the door before I could stop her.

Niki is gaining muscle mass which is good, since the muscles will help hold the right hind leg in place.

Niki is really cute, Gwen.  I know from experience that when we get a new dog, we tend to expect that dog to act or respond like the last one.  When my German Shepherd died years ago, we had bought a Miniature Pinscher.  Totally different in nature.  We were too hard on that little thing, expecting it to know certain things, to respond in certain ways.  Finally, we realized our mistake and learned from it.  We never know everything, and many times these experiences are just what we need to learn.  I am so happy that you have Niki.  I find that getting a new pet soon after the loss of another one does help.
