Admin told me to start another pet thread going, so please respond with the name of your first pet and what kind of animal it was.

My first pet was a parakeet named Whitie. I was four when my mom got the bird for me. She stayed in the cage for most of her life. When I was six, I got curious as to why she never came out of the cage. My mom told me that when we got the bird my aunt was living with us and didn't like birds, so they kept her inside the cage the whole time. My mom said the bird was too old to train now.

I spent weeks getting the bird to sit on a stick, then my finger, and finally come out of her cage. My mom was amazed. Unfortunately, Whitie had a stroke a couple of months later and died, but we were very good friends the last few months of her life.

That's when my parents and I realized I was very good with animals.

My first pet was a black lab puppy named buddy. His life ended shortly after we got him, my dad worked the night shift and he came home one night and didn't see him on the carport, cause he was black and it was dark. I woke up the next day and found him squashed under the tire. It was really sad.

Since then I have had several other black labs, all named buddy of course. Buddy number three is living with my stepmother now. I am far to busy to take care of a pet myself at this time, so hopefully when I am done with school I can make time for a pet again.

The death of a pet from accident or old age is always sad.

My rats only live for 3 years, so I've grown used to replacing them. Each new rat has such a different personality that it is interesting to compare them. I'm on Robin #16 and Marian #3. This time Marian is the out going one, the one who will explore more and put herself on the ledge to get to the food. This morning she fell off, while reaching for the food dish I was refilling.

When I loose a dog, I am devastated, and it takes me awhile to get another dog. My current dog, Loki, will be 15 in January. I dread the day when she will pass.

FiZz, I admire you for waiting until you can give the future pet the time and attention it deserves.

My firt pet was a chihuahau terrier mix that we got when I was 10. Her name was Princess. She lived until the ripe old age of 17. She was a great dog. She could jump straight up about 4 feet into my grandfather's arms. He was over 6 feet tall. She loved people.

Hi Debby,

Wow, jumping four feet up is really amazing!

My current dog used to jump into trees with low branches and then climb up to try and get the squirrels.  I'm glad she didn't try to jump into my arms, since she is a 50 pound dog.

Sh's too old to do much jumping now.

First Pet...A Hamster named Jumper.

Lived for 6 years, which from what I understand is pretty good for a hamster.

He was a cutie.

That's an extremely long life for a hamster.

My mom has two of the Mongolian hamsters that are smaller than a regular hamster. They look like a tiny ball of fluff.

My parents have always had pets, even before I was born.  The first pet I really remember was a long-haired tabby cat named Sam we had when I was about 4 or 5.  But I don't remember how old he was when we had to put him down.  Many other cats (and a few dogs, hamsters, and mice) have come and gone in my life since then, but I have many good memories of them.

Gwen, I have never had a dog since who could jump that high. Our maltese could jump over the back of the couch and if you wanted to gate him in a room you needed to put two gates one on top of the other but he coudn't jump as high as Princess. It is fun reading about all the different pets. As a child I had cats and dogs. My children have had guinea pigs and dogs as their dad is allergic to cats. They wanted a cat so he asked the allergist if he took the shots if they could get a cat but the allergist said he was too allergic. The things dads will do for their daughters.

Hi Selini,

I've had most of those animals as pets too. My family has had dogs, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, turtles, fish, and birds.

In high school, I suddenly inherited all the cage cleaning duties (my sisters kept forgetting so my mom just had me do it). I cleaned four cages and the fish bowl every week. That many cage chores made me realize that if I can't take care of the pet, then I should find it a home.

My love of rats has affected my nieces and nephews, since when they got old enough they told their parents they wanted a rat like aunt Gwen has. : )

Gwen,

We had a lot of fish, too, when I was growing up.  I particularly remember one large angelfish.  He was a big fish and was a pretty light gold color.   If someone put their face close to the glass, he would come over to investigate.

Of course the fish had a name. My sister's goldfish was named Goldie.

I once had five tadpoles who were all named Pollysomething; Pollyann and Pollygon were two of the names. When one accidently went down the drain, my mom asked me which one that was. I replied, without even thinking: "That was Pollygon."

We had a huge angelfish. We had to move and had to give it away. It was beautiful to by another one that size would have cost $25.00 so we bought a little one and had it grow again. We also had some huge plecosimisis and a Oscar. We had a fifty gallon tank. The only fish with a name was the Oscar who of course was called Oscar.

My first pet was a chihuahau named Frisky. Several more chihuahau's followed over the years and I named them all Frisky in honor of the first one.

Jane that is funny I wanted to name our first dog a chihuahua-rat terrier mix Frisky but was out voted and we named her Princess.
