let me preface this with saying i am a huge fan of the show and think it is exellent. however, one thing that does bother me is that the whole relationship between roger and emily seemed downplayed and kind of shallow for a couple that was engaged-i dont think emily even tried to argue for her fiancee' to not be thrown out of town.

No, Emily didn't put up much of a fight to keep Roger in town.  They did show us how unhappy Roger was and I think Emily might have begun to realize no matter what he was leaving.

If she had begun to question their relationship, then this was an easy way to end the relationship, especially with Jake back in town. 

I wonder if Roger will show up in season 2?
