Hi Airassault,

I was wondering if there are any circumstances that would explain why a military unit, normally from the East block, would end up in the Allied States?

Gwen,
Thats what I am trying to figure out because the 10th should be in the East. Either the writers paid no attention to the breakout or they have a story to explain why a unit for the East is in the West. 1 possible scenario could be the 10th was at NTC on a rotation when it all went down. Another is that they were rotating back from Iraq when the bombs went off and were diverted to somewhere in the West (least likely).
But when the show eludes to Allied States power being more than the East I have to wonder...what are they thinking?? The East should have a huge military advantage over the Allied States. But at least they got Texas right.

Maybe the sheer amount of radiated area in the East is the contributing factor to the mentioned Western strength.......On a side note I think the East would have a pretty bad problem feeding it's poulation centers with the West in control of the heartland.

The leaders of the Allied States were behind the attacks, would it not be safe to presume that they would ensure measures had been taken that would allow them a military advantage over the east?

Also, even if the East does have a stronger military on paper, the fact that the Allied States had plans in place may allow them more effective control of what military forces they do have -- in addition to strategic advantages such as nuclear weapons, and with NORAD and Vandenburg it's possible the allied states have control over many command and control functions of the military... Though I don't really know where ultimate control of such resources lie. But if the Allied Force could take control of space based resources, ICBMs, etc...

...And of course, considering the hardship already occuring, the Eastern government would probably not survive going to war with the Allied States, so any military advantage they have might be ameliorated by the fact that they can't use it without a massive uprising ensuing.

R8dr,
I do see that as an issue for the East too. But remember us mil types are a little different there. We could sustain ourselves alot longer (in terms of functionality and what have you) And that leads into nr5667's point. And while that is a very intriguing point the mil establishment doesn't really work like that. Plus the East it appears has some other support mechanisms working for it (UN/Nato). I don't think Nukes play that big a role here (we are not going to nuke ourselves). But in terms of land based forces the East on paper should be way stronger. Now other factors could be that more units from the east were deployed at the time, they are too busy running humanitarian missions in the east, high radiation levels, a severe breakdown in the COC, or they are just playing possum to the east (or the east doesn't know what its talking about...remember its the west that is making the claim..for all we know it is propaganda).

But either way I think we get a real answer soon.
