I was asked on another board to please send a Christmas card to some of our soldiers recovering at Walter Reed. I just wanted to pass this along in case others would like to do the same. Below is the message posted to me.

Susan;

I know that we don't know each other well on the board. I wonder if you would do something for me.

I was a soldier once. Christmas is coming. I wonder if you would send a Christmas card to one of the boys at Walter Reed Army Hospital. I believe you can understand what it would mean to a wounded guy.

Not all have families.

Send a Christmas card to :

Recovering American Soldier

c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center

6900 Georgia Avenue, NW

Washington, D.C.  20307-5001

Pray for them.

I’ve added a page Community > Community Service > Military which includes the general information.

Thank you for doing this. It really does mean a great deal to me as I'm sure it will many others as well.

An update to this effort. Walter Reed is not accepting cards or packages addressed to a recovering soldier due to security issues.

After checking into this dbalcer is correct.

I also do not think any other group can forward as the concern seems to be the cards themselves.

I’d like the people reading this thread to look at the following link as a substitute and let me know what you think.

http://www4.army.mil/ocpa/tooursoldiers/

Another option is that we could list soldiers that the community personally knows and send cards directly to them. Those cards would, perhaps, be delivered.

There were suggestions about how to help the soldiers on the Walter Reed website I will see if I can find it. VFW groups could personally take in cards given to them.

Walter Reed didn’t seem to suggest anyone else could take them.  I suspect the issue, has little to do cardness, but more to do with non-specifically addressed mail and the threat such mail could pose. Look at what Walter Reed gives as a date for the rule and where the rule came from. Seems to me that is at the height of the mail scare. As I read it, they’re basically saying, such mail is suspect and will not be delivered to the hospital by the US Post Office.

So even if VW groups could take them in, they might not be able to deliver them either. We’d need something from a Walter Reed rep (and not a VW rep) saying they could.

I was not suggesting sending them to Walter Reed but wounded vets also go to local VA hospitals where VFW members visit. I am sure they can take them to the soldiers as they would be hand delivering them. I would also check with other military hospitals as Walter Reed is not the only hospital recieving wounded soldiers. My youngest daughter volunteered at the Augusta Georgia VA hospital in their active duty rehab section and met lots of soldiers returning wounded from the war. It was a great experience for her. The veterans groups in that area were always reaching out to the soldiers. Unfortunately we no longer live in Augusta.

Hi Debby,

I'm checking with an aid worker I know who has coordinated efforts like this to see if there is an organization we could send unaddressed cards to, or a website where we can find the names of soldiers without families.

I will let you know what she tells me. She's a former soldier and red cross worker and she currently coordinates my other organization's efforts to reach out to the soldiers on active duty.

She sometimes sends out the strangest request. One unit was sent out and although they had beds, they had no sheets. She coordinated the effort to get the right size sheets to this one unit.

I will post what I find out.

Well I haven't found any organization that will forward cards to wounded soldiers, but there are several programs that will forward mail/cards to soldiers that don't have any family.

Anysoldier.com and soldiersangels.org

Anyone interested in doing this?

What about Staten Island Project Homefront? Are they able to take cards and then include them in care packages they send to the troops?

Perhaps we could start a thread that list all of the great ideas people have come up with and let people choose who they want to send to. I know some who will gladlly become involved with several of the efforts.
