Kystorms has a theory that John Smith is Major Beck. Read her recap to see why:

Do you agree with Kystorm's theory?

She could be right, since we don't really know that much about Beck and where he was in the 90's.  It would definitely be a wicked twist on the whole Beck-Hawkins relationship.  It will be very interesting to find out who John Smith really is.

I really don’t think it is Beck. I would hope the writers would come up with something better than that.

Darcy says that the information on the faxes had been coming in for awhile. The whole page from the binder thing seems very incredulous if Beck is involved. He certainly would have little more than hope that Hawkins would be able to get it and frankly why would he even need Hawkins to take it?

Having Beck be Smith is just far to Deus ex Machina. Now Col. Hoffman, maybe. Remember that Smith says he helped write the J&R plan. Which would mean he was actually employed by J&R. Further would mean that the J&R conspirators would have known where he was all along. Why let him live? John Smith would need to be either in hiding, believed dead, or have the conspirators believe he’s on board.

According to the cast list for Episode 7, Xander Berkeley (from "24") is John Smith.  So that confirms it is not Beck.

Here's a link to the Episode 7 thread:

Sorry to me John Smith is the most dangerous kind of terrorist. He knows what it takes to make his point.

You're right, and there's so much we still don't know about Jake.

I'm surprised that John Smith is still alive! Jake shot him, but he must have gotten help after Jake and Hawkins left in the ambulance.

Issue #4 of the Jericho comic tells us all about John Smith, which is an alias. John Smith's real name is David.

Issue #4 will be in stores on 2/16.
