That would be cool, but I'm holding out some hope that they figure out a way to bring him back.

Any Johnston at all is a good thing though!

Jake talking to his grandfather was written as Jake talking to Johnston. Unfortunately, Gerald McRany was not available to do the filming (he was in New York doing a play).

Yes, they could bring Johnston back in a dream or via flashbacks and I think that is the most logical solution.

So it was sgmarshall who first suggested that Gerald McRaney could come back as Johnston's twin brother and that is exaclty what happened in the comic, which we know is the transition to the movie.
