As some of you know, I'm still cleaning out areas of my in-laws house. We moved the refrigerator in the garage and guess what I found - something to make a post-apocalyptic fan very happy!

Civil Defense Information Kit (circa 1955)

I'm going to be transcribing parts of the kit, since it is very interesting:

To: All El Cerrito Residents

This kit is designed to serve you, to provide such comfort as authoritative information can provide, and perhaps to save your life. Please read it, understand it and keep it.

The world has long since entered the Atomic Age. It may have passed it. Atomic weapons are now obsolete in some type of warfare. The development and improvements of the hydrogen bomb have placed us, for Civil Defense purposes at least, in the Thermo-Nuclear Age. What affect does this have upon us and upon our every day conduct?

It simply means that for the area of El Cerrito there could be no survival from thermo-nuclear attack if an enemy delivered a weapon that is within his capability to the most strategic point within the San Francisco Bay Area. These are the planning presumptions used by Federal, State and Local authorities.

The solution is simple also. The only defense is distance. Enclosed in this kit is a card giving the various signals to be heard which signify whether there is time to evacuate or to seek closest available shelter.

All of the authorities recognize the many difficulties involved in mass evacuation but since there is no alternative opportunity for survival, this is the program adopted nation wide.

A must, in view of these facts, is the maintenance of at least a half tank of gasoline in every automobile. Every family should have a plan for survival and have some emergency supplies in or near the automobile.

This is a state wide program that is several years old. Civil Defense authorities are as busy preparing to receive as this area is to evacuate. It is in the reception areas that the hospitals, mass care shelters, emergency food supplies, registration centers are of major importance. This work is carried on by local authorities under guidance of Federal and State authorities.

Further specific questions may be asked by calling the El Cerrito City Hall, LAndscape 6 -XXXX.

REMEMBER! KEEP THIS ENVELOPE AND . . . . BE PREPARED!

The packet was prepared by the Director of Civil Defense, City of El Cerrito. Here is what was inside:

Air Raid Instruction sheet, which is marked at the bottom by GPO 1955
Between You and Disaster by the Federal Civil Defense Administration, US Government Printing Office, 1956
Six Step to Survival (with a mushroom cloud on the front page), Federal Civil Defense Administration, US Government Printing Office, 1955
Your Car and Civil Defense, Federal Civil Defense Administration, US Government Printing Office, 1955

Under a separate mailing label, but with the other stuff was the Community Emergency Plan, Contra Costa County, Office of Emergency Services, State of California

No date on the last one, but it says you can get a booklet called "In Time of Emergency" by the Office of Civil Defense, so I assume it's the same era.

Unfortunately, "In Time of Emergency" was not included, but knowing my mother-in-law it is somewhere in this house. : )

I do plan to make electronic copies of this information and I will try to protect the originals and display them at the Ranger Rendezvous and the Jericho Fan Table.

Gwen

That is so cool.  I would imagine every area had those. I have not seen them around here.    I remember in grade school having drills where we had to go into the hallway and sit facing the lockers with our heads between our knees.  Kind of like the saying kiss you @&%* goodbye.
