CBS Mobile Chief: Wireless Industry Is Overwhelming Consumers

TO MAKE MOBILE A VIABLE ad platform, carriers, device makers and content providers need to simplify mobile media-buying and not try to pitch cell phones as mini-TVs or Web sites.

That was the upshot of a panel, "Unleashing Mobile Advertising," at the AlwaysOn OnMedia NYC conference Wednesday highlighted by a diatribe unleashed by CBS Mobile chief Cyriac Roeding against the endemic confusion surrounding the medium.

TNS Takes On Nielsen's TV Ratings Franchise

TNS Media Research, the dominant media research firm in Europe, is the latest company to make a run at Nielsen's monopoly on the U.S. TV ratings business.

Nielsen's ratings hold the key to $70 billion in TV advertising. Everyone complains about them, but so far no one's been able to offer real competition. TNS's plan: Work with satellite TV service DirecTV to cull data from from 100,000 set-tops.

TV: Lost season 4 tonight, Jericho season 2 Feb. 12

Posted by Tipa.

I recently finished watching Jericho’s first season, the story of a United States that has been destroyed by a simultaneous terrorist nuclear attack on 22 US cities, which, at the Season 1 closer, seemed to have been masterminded by the Department of Homeland Security.

I cannot recommend this series highly enough. It’s probably the last example of the long-arc drama that brought us Lost and Heroes, and was saved by the thousands of dedicated fans who wrote in demanding a second season.

Jericho Season 2 premiere (slight spoilers)

Posted by  littleman00.

Source: The Country's Best Jobert.

When we last left the citizens of Jericho, Kansas, they were embroiled in an armed dispute with the neighboring town of New Bern. Actually, ‘armed dispute’ is a bit of an understatement; Jericho and New Bern were basically at war. New Bern, led by Sheriff Constantino, wanted Jericho’s farms and salt mine. Jericho, on the other hand, was dependent on New Bern for their factory and windmills.

Into the Black Hills

Posted by staff.

Source: CBS Tom Tooman Blog.

The adventure with Poe’s raven helped our players unlocked a new destination: Black Hills Radio Control. Here, Tooman had embedded several Morse Code clues. The first, a fragment of Civil War by Roman lyrical poet Lucan was decoded and posted on Unfiction. Lucan was writing during Nero’s reign (so be suspicious if any Jericho residents break out a fiddle in Season 2). Tom’s other codes helped players to solve a larger puzzle, and unlocked a major clue dissemination that players have been using for months now: the radio towers.

At this newly unlocked site players tuned into Tom’s personal radio tower network to scan frequencies and pick up signals across the Midwest. Signals were discovered from the military, from cities that had been hit in the attacks and from characters in the ARG (like Ryan Archer). It’s taken some truly amazing teamwork by the Nuts posting on Unfiction to crack all these codes! Read more about how they did it in the Black Hills Radio Control thread.

Jericho

Review by Adam.

Source: What I Love.

Continuing with the post-apocalyptic theme around here, today brings us Jericho, the CBS show that gained more publicity for getting canceled than it did during its actual run. When CBS pulled the plug on the show after it garnered mediocre ratings, a fan campaign to bring it back actually succeeded for the first time I can think of, leading CBS to renew it for a short second season as a mid-season replacement. With the continuing writer’s strike, these 7 episodes are Jericho’s chance to build an audience with little to no competition.

'Jericho' Kicks Off New Online Game

Article by Don Williams.

Source: Buddy TV.

Jericho fans who can't wait for season 2, and who want to delve further into the world of their favorite show, may want to check out the new alternate reality game based on the series. An alternate reality game, or ARG, is an interactive story where the plot unfolds over time and across all forms of communication, which can include anything from graffiti to phone calls to stickers to web site puzzles to videos. Sometimes there are puzzles for players to solve, sometimes it's just a matter of connecting some dots, and other times it's even more complicated. The clever marketing minds behind Jericho recently kicked off an ARG that will offer devoted fans some clues of what's to come in the series.

Jericho Season 2 Preview-The End of the World as we Know It

Review by Jon Lachonis.

Source: Under Ground Online.

Jericho was a conceptual risk from the beginning, but not merely based on the salability of its hook – Jericho was a post 9-11 conspiracy drama with domestic terrorism running through its blood being released in a time when patriotism and rhetoric culled from radical jihadists were sensitive issues for a population living under the specter of orange alerts and the Iraq war.  The slightest hint of sensationalism over these topics and Jericho would have been drawn and quartered and sent back to CBS in several hundred zip lock bags.  But it didn’t.  Jericho survived, and its tale of a world rebuilding itself seen through the eyes of the people of Jericho became an apt fairy tale of hope reaching for the moral ether, and an affirmation that there is some parenthetical American x-factor when it comes to society building.  It became a parable of what we had become in a post 9-11 world, multiplied by a thousand.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 1/29

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

A few more nights like last night and it may not take FOX as long as Bill thought it would to surpass CBS in the season-to-date ratings. FOX easily won this night averaging over 25 million viewers from 8pm-10pm. American Idol picked up some steam versus last week and in the second half hour had over 30 million viewers. When a new episode of House aired at 9pm, it kept more than 2/3rds the viewership with its best performance of the year. House averaged over 22 million viewers and while overnight results are subject to change, since its previous best for the season was 18.31 million, it should be easily eclipsed.

Jericho Season 2 RECONSTRUCTION

When the bombs dropped, everything about the world we knew changed. Neighbors became enemies, ordinary citizens became vigilantes, and a once powerful government became fractured and weakened.

Season 2 of Jericho brings many answers to what is happening in the outside world, as it lands smack dab in the middle of town square. A new flag, a new Government, and a well hidden plot, are the realities of a broken America.

Three Reasons Why I Love the Television Show Jericho

It was a sad, sad day when the news came that it was canned due to low viewer-ship. Thanks to an incredible influx of nuts sent to the company, it has been revived on a trial basis. Hopefully, the media attention will increase viewer-ship so others can see what an interesting television show it is. There were three main reasons that I loved this show

Strike gives NBC chance to change

Article by William Triplett.

The broadcasting biz has come to a change-or-die crossroads, NBC Universal topper Jeff Zucker bluntly told NATPE-goers in Tuesday’s opening keynote address.

On top of the new competition for eyeballs and ad dollars online and elsewhere, the turmoil caused by the writers strike provided the Peacock with the last big push it needed to make fundamental changes in the way it does business, particularly in programming and development at its broadcast network and O&O stations, Zucker said.

Editor: I would normally print what CBS had to say, but CBS choose not to attend this conference. Please read about the changes NBC is making.

When Season 2 of “Jericho” picks back up on CBS on Feb. 12, fans won’t even notice that the post-apocalyptic show has a smaller budget.

Brad Beyer, who plays Stanley Richmond in the series, said that a combination of the writers strike and the strong demand for new “Jericho” by its fans could easily propel the series into a third season.

Strike: Signs still promising

Article by Dave McNary.

Hollywood remains guardedly optimistic about an end to the writers strike, now entering its 13th week.

There's another sign of a thaw in the chilly relationship between scribes and congloms: With no advance fanfare, CBS Corp. supremo Leslie Moonves broke bread with WGA leaders Patrick Verrone and David Young on Friday. The trio, along with CBS labor relations chief Harry Isaacs, had dinner at a private dining room inside the Four Seasons Hotel.

Garth Brooks: Live in LA led CBS to a nightly win in terms of overall viewers. The concert won the 9pm hour in terms of viewers but Garth held less sway with the “youthful” 18-49 demo, where a rerun of House was more popular. CBS trailed both NBC (which won the night) and FOX in terms of the 18-49 demo. But buck up Garth, you are still more popular than Friday Night Smackdown!, and I confess to being a little surprised to find that out!

Jericho finds new home

Posted by staff.

Source: C21Media - London,England,UK.

CBS drama Jericho has found an off-network cable home on the Sci Fi Channel, after being saved from the axe last June.

Sci Fi has picked up the rights to seasons one and two of the apocalyptic series, which was re-commissioned only after a groundswell of public opposition to its pending cancellation.

Sci Fi will begin Jericho's off-net run with a four-episode marathon on February 11, the day before season two (7x60') premieres on CBS. A week later, the series will begin airing in its regular Monday 22.00 slot on Sci Fi, when it will also be simulcast on Sci Fi HD.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Wednesday, 1/23

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

American Idol and FOX once again dominate, and that’s no surprise. But, Moment of Truth which premiered on FOX after Idol last night was the most successful airing of a new show after American Idol FOX has ever had.

Idol averaged almost 27 million viewers and Moment of Truth retained over 23 million of them. For all its success, Idol’s numbers are down ~15% versus last year. So much for all the chuckleheads yapping about how the WGA strike was going to mean huge numbers for American Idol. Nonetheless, FOX won the night in a big way, easily more than doubling average total viewers and viewers 18-49 versus a very distant NBC, which placed second for the night.

Rather than rail on how all the execs at ABC, CBS, NBC and CW should be immediately fired or at the very least, ashamed of themselves, we’ll just talk about…Drew Carey. Good news/bad news for Drew: The Carey hosted Power of 10 which gets completely beat down by Deal or No Deal, let alone American Idol, has been yanked from the schedule effective immediately. Last night’s beat down was the last it will endure until an expected return this summer. Two episodes of The New Adventures of Old Christine will replace it this coming Wednesday.

Tom Tooman Quotes "The Raven"

Posted by staff.

Source: Tom Tooman Blog.

Tom’s mysterious satellite images ultimately brought players to a new site, AreYouABorder.com, which showcases an 1890 Magic Lantern (a precursor to film and television) rendering of Poe’s “The Raven” created by Joseph Boggs Beale, an artist from 1890. Why has Tooman chosen Poe? Poe, like Tom, was a cryptographer. This puzzle continues Tooman’s pattern of splicing and embedding communications with his own messages. Hidden within the site experience, players found a form field (for a secret password) and had a run-in with an animated raven. To see how they tackled these obstacles check out this thread in the unfiction forum.

One intrepid player circumvented Tom’s plan and solved the puzzle before finding all of Tom’s clues. This unlocked another new site, AreYouABorderNevermore.com, now known in the player community as Black Hills Radio Control. This site has been integral in helping players decrypt communications from all over the post-attack Midwest, including messages from adversarial forces that may have Jericho in their sights.

Nielsen to Measure U.S. Video On Demand Usage From Set Top Box Data

Press release by staff.

Source: PRNewswire.

The Nielsen Company today announced the commercial launch of NORA Nielsen On Demand Reporting & Analytics(TM), a new measurement service that aggregates and anonymously reports on video-on-demand (VOD) usage based on real time transactions collected at the set-top box level.

Part of the Nielsen DigitalPlus service, this new web-based tool will also provide integrated data sets from other measurement services from across The Nielsen Company, including Nielsen EDI and Nielsen VideoScan. The new NORA offering complements Nielsen's existing panel-based National People Meter VOD Audience Measurement service.

At launch, Comcast, the nation's leading provider of cable, entertainment and communications products and services, will be providing VOD data for the NORA service, covering January 1, 2007 to the present. Comcast will also begin using the NORA service immediately to analyze trends in VOD usage based on a number of factors, including programmer, program distributor, program category (e.g., if the program is available at no charge, is part of a premium service or is a title customers pay for individually) and the box-office revenue.

Lionsgate signs as WGA talks go on

Article by Dave Mcnary.

Source: Variety.

With Hollywood holding its collective breath, WGA leaders and moguls provided another slice of optimism as they continued to meet informally for a third straight day to hammer out a conclusion to the three-month writers strike.

Talks remained under a news blackout Thursday with another session planned for today -- giving rise to hopes that the de facto negotiations are productive enough developing sufficient momentum to lead to the resumption of formal negotiations.

The WGA trumpted a pair of interim deals Thursday with Lionsgate, the largest indie producer, and superhero specialist Marvel Entertainment. The new pacts give the WGA a dozen such deals as part of its "divide and conquer" strategy to put pressure on the majors to accept the guild's terms.

In the free music space, can CBS succeed where others have failed?

Article by Caroline McCarthy.

Source: The Social.

According to Quincy Smith, president of CBS Interactive (the CBS division that owns Last.fm), big media companies may be the key to making ad-supported music a success. "Only media can bring those kinds of sponsorship relationships," he said in an interview with CNET News.com, adding that broadband penetration has reached a point where streaming music is legitimately viable.

But targeted advertising, like many of the other developments that CBS Interactive plans with Last.fm, hasn't been rolled out yet. "We wanted to make sure we got that announcement out there to the consumers first," Smith explained. Later, we'll start to see some of the projects that were rumored yesterday, when it became evident that Last.fm was making a big announcement--including, perhaps, a video-related service.

"We certainly own (the domain) Last.tv," Smith said.

Goodbye Enterprise, hello Jericho!

I really do like the later seasons of Enterprise and I'll be a little sad to see them go, but a very fine show is taking its place that need people need to see. Jericho had its bumps as any new series does, but it easily earned a second full season order and was at least good enough to get seven more, even after it had been canceled, which led to a silly yet effective fan effort to get the show back on the air.

CBS will know sooner rather than later whether or not they will allow "Jericho" to keep on living past its second season, but fans may get a little help from a new rebroadcasting deal the post-apocalyptic series has made with the SciFi Channel.

Carol Barbee, the executive producer of the series that fans saved with nothing more than a few measly ton of nuts, said a decision by network on whether or not to renew the series could come before February ends.

‘Jericho’s’ Future To Be Determined Early

Posted by Alan Stanley Blair.

Source: Rabid Doll.
The CBS series “Jericho” was cancelled after its first season completed its run last year and was very quickly resurrected for a 7-episode second season thanks to a massive fan campaign where truckloads of nuts were delivered to the studio. With the series revival came a promise: if the second season received solid ratings, CBS will certainly give a third year the green light.

And according to executive producer Carol Barbee, fans will know early on what kind of a future lies in store for the apocalyptic drama. Fans shouldn’t worry about jaw dropping cliff-hangers though, because before the show wrapped up production two endings were filmed … one to introduce season three and another to provide closure to the whole adventure

Jericho Season 2 News And Premiere Date

Posted by Bruce Simmons.

If the show gets good ratings (people, RECORD American Idol and watch Jericho!) season three just might be coming our way. The catch is that the numbers need to be good by the third or fourth episode of a season for a series to be considered for renewal says Carol Barbee, executive producer of Jericho. In case it does work out, CBS already has a third season story line arc planned out.

Even if something goes awry with the ratings, fans of the series will still get to re-watch their favorite show on TV as the Sci Fi Channel has snapped up cable rerun rights to Jericho from CBS Television Distribution.

CBS Corp.'s Last.fm music and community site has launched a service that lets anyone listen to full-length tracks on demand for free, without creating an account or logging in. Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 1/22

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

American Idol was back, and all eyes were on it, with over 29 million viewers. Otherwise, only a repeat of House and a new Law & Order were able to muster anywhere near half as many viewers as AI. FOX easily won the night ahead of a distant second place finish by NBC.

While one could argue that both CBS’s NCIS and NBC’s The Biggest Loser hold up OK given the formidable competition from Idol, that seems like way better news for CBS with a rerun than it does for NBC. ABC’s Tuesday night lineup is just plain not competitive. Although it will definitely gain some viewers back for Tuesday night when Dancing with the Stars returns, you begin to wonder if ABC shouldn’t throw According to Jim and Carpoolers onto the scrap heap before that happens – even with fresh episodes remaining.

Perhaps ABC should do just that, but it seems unlikely. It would appear that between now and the return of DWTS, the Mouse has thrown in the towel.

In this interview on SciFi Wire, Carol Barbee *Executive Producer of Jericho* says that she should hear word on whether Jericho will go beyond the current seven episodes due to begin on Feb 12th.

As with the interview Carol did on Jericho4Kids she mentions that the word will most likely come early on in the episodes, maybe by episode three. The big what if in this is the Writers Strike, which might give us a week longer to see if CBS orders more. I say that this strike is going to be a help to us, and most reporters who are covering this are in agreement. We are not up against new shows on the other nets. I would also like to point out how well CBS has been doing with Moonlight and Friday nights in general, we are kicking butt big time. I see this trend continuing over to Tuesday nights.

Industry hopes costly strike ends

Article by Cynthia Littleton and Josef Adalian.

Source: Variety.

Now that the two sides are talking again, hope is rising that the writers strike will be settled sooner rather than later. If that doesn't happen, the showbiz community will face far more financial pain related to the strike -- just as the national economy appears to be skidding into a recession.

The really staggering figure comes when you take the $3 billion estimate for lost film and TV production spending and consider the multiplier effect, or the lost spending stemming from expenditures for physical production (lumber, paint, craft services, supplies, town cars, etc.) plus the lost spending among actors, writers, directors, crews et al. who didn't have as much money to drop on meals in restaurants, clothing and that new Prius they might've been eyeing before the strike.

Because showbiz workers are generally highly paid (and unionized), the U.S. Dept. of Commerce applies a high multiplier of 2.8 in assessing the ripple effect of the showbiz sector, which means that $3 billion in lost coin will really feel like a loss of $8.4 billion in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and other production hubs should the strike persist into April.

CBS trims down its pilot season by 20 projects !

Posted by Fred.

Source: TVoholic.

It was already in the air, maybe you could sense it : if networks aren’t completely giving up on the upcoming pilot season, they sure do not intend to have it go down as usual. Oh no, serious cuts will be applied, and many projects and order of pilots will be purely and simply be dropped as a result to the writers’ strike.

The only good things that one could try to see from this are : first, that network would choose to keep projects they really believe in, and as such would give them a real chance once on the air (instead of deciding to cancel them after half the pilot aired), and second, that maybe, now that CBS has to deal with a shortened pilot season coming, they would really consider ordering a third season for Jericho. I don’t know, I’m just saying : the show is already there, installed, has a large and quite dedicated fan base, and the second season seem to be even better than the first one was…

The TV Show Jericho Is A Maddening Lesson

Article by Michael d'Estries.

Source: Groovygreen.

My wife and I finally got caught up on a little pop culture and started watching the acclaimed series Jericho. For those that don’t know, this is a TV show that was on last year and canceled after one season. However, a massive fan base organized online managed to persuade CBS executives to bring the drama back this coming February for at least seven episodes (enough to tie it all up, or see if viewership warrants another season).

Anyways, television politics aside, the premise is that the modern-day world has suffered a nuclear attack, knocking out 23 American cities and sending the United States into chaos. The action centers on the small town of Jericho — a small, rural Kansas town.

Websites make it easy to catch a missed TV show

Article by Mike Snider.

Source: USA Today.

Even as their supply of new programs dwindles during the months-long writers' strike, major TV networks continue to try to capture online viewers.
Streaming free full-length episodes on their own websites was just the beginning. Episodes from ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC are showing up on an assortment of sites, from big destinations such as AOL to newcomers Veoh and MeeVee.

Signs are that time spent watching video — not just snacks à la YouTube, but full episodes — is increasing. The number of broadband users who watched full shows online weekly doubled in 2007 from 8% to 16%, says market research firm Horowitz Associates.

Embracing the Web is "an acknowledgement that this is real (and networks) have a business model and can monetize it and make it part of their growth," Howard Horowitz says.

Jericho: First Three Season 2 Episodes Leaked

The first three episodes of Jericho season 2 have leaked onto the torrent sites. This isn't a rare occurrence. TV shows, movies and albums get leaked all the time before their proper releases. However, it is usually rare when a TV series gets leaked ahead of time. Last year, the first four episodes of 24's sixth season became available on torrent sites before the premiere, but that was attributed to FOX releasing a DVD containing the first four episodes the day after the two-night premiere. With Jericho, there is no such DVD. Therefore, I think the question needs to be asked: did CBS themselves release the episodes onto the internet?

Even if the WGA strike ends in the next few weeks, it seems increasingly likely that NBC won’t put on its annual Radio City Music Hall sales spectacular for Madison Avenue in May.

So far, no other network suits have been as blunt in suggesting they might curb their upfronts. Indeed, if the strike is settled within the next month or so, it seems likely that the majority of nets will still try to do an upfront pitch of some sort. If not, then it becomes more likely this year’s upfronts will be dramatically pared back. Either way, some changes are likely.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Sunday, 1/20

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

The NFC conference championship dominated primetime ratings on the East coast, and let’s face it, if there’s an East coast-bias in anything, it’s with Nielsen Ratings. Based on the numbers, the East coast was as captivated with the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field in high definition as I was. The NFC championship averaged 48.58 million viewers. Contrast that with the Super Bowl and you will see there is still big upside for FOX in a couple of weeks. Certainly last night’s NFC conference final was the most watched program since TVbytheNumbers.com launched last September.

Football dominated and otherwise there wasn’t much to write home about (41 more million people preferred to watch NFL football than a CBS special on Global Warming — shocking, I know). It would seem that as long as the tundra is frozen, people can’t get too upset about global warming. If it makes you feel any better, more than 38 million preferred NFL to the season finale of CBS’ The Amazing Race, too.

Jericho returns, with two endings !

Posted by Fred.

As you probably know, there’s one show coming back this season this isn’t like any other, because after the network pretty much killed it, fans went nuts and “successfully” had CBS to realize their mistake, and a second season of post-apocalyptic series Jericho is heading its way towards us.

I’m not sure it was a full success given how, despite their admittance to having killed the first season, they only ordered a very small second season, with only seven episodes. But there may be hope for more, there may be, because CBS said that, should that second season do well, a third one could be ordered after wards. I don’t know if they really meant it or not, but all people who love the Jericho, from fans to producers, writers, the cast, all sure hope they did, and that a third season will follow.

The strike aside, hit shows are still missing

Article by Sctt Collins.

Through the first three months of the season, total viewing on the five broadcast networks collectively slipped 5% compared with the previous year, according to figures from Nielsen Media Research (only Fox was up, by a modest 4%). In other words, any ratings erosion due to the strike will not likely be much worse than what the networks were experiencing anyway.

More important, out of 27 new shows, not a single one can be classified as a breakout hit. Not "Pushing Daisies," not "Gossip Girl," not "Chuck," not "Private Practice," not "Back to You," not (please not!) "Kid Nation."

That is the real disaster of this season, and it has nothing to do with the strike. Hey, don't blame the writers either: It's the networks' air, and their executives make very large salaries to pick hit shows.

We spend a lot of time watching TV shows. A few our TiVo catches and the rest I stream from the laptop to the Xbox 360. We just don’t have the time to spend watching tv when the networks want us to so we hardly ever watch live tv. I recently got Season 1 of Jericho. I had heard of Jericho but had never watched it and didn’t know much about it. After reading that a few people I follow were excited for season 2 and reading more about the show it grabbed my attention. So, we had to get season one. We are about half way through the season and I gotta say its an awesome show. I’m lovin’ the characters, the plot, the mystery and the sub-plots. We hope to finish season one in time for season two.

Jericho Season 2 Being Promoted

Some of the best news since the announcement that there was to be a second season of Jericho, is the fact that CBS is really promoting the second season of Jericho. We all know that this has a lot to do with the fact there is very little content on TV due to the strike, and that CBS is trying to really play the fan card.

It’s Time To Save The Country, Starting With ‘Jericho’

Posted by Alan Stanley Blair.

Source: Rabiddoll.

When CBS’ “Jericho” was cancelled after only a single season, no one was quite prepared for the backlash from the shows loyal fanbase. And then following a large-scale campaign involving a lot of angry viewers and a massive amount of nuts, the series was given a green light for a limited second season … with the possibility of more.

The catch? Nothing new to network television: ratings. If ratings for the seven episode season two are high enough then CBS will certainly be interested in continuing with the apocalyptic story. But just in case, show producers have two endings in the can ready to role.

Jericho Returns

Posted by Sandra Bruckner.

Source: The Zocalo Today - January 19, 2008

As if the wait were not enough for this fine drama, Carol Barbee, executive producer of CBS' post-apocalyptic series JERICHO, said during a recent interview that the upcoming seven-episode second season will tell a complete story--but that producers shot two endings in case the show is picked up for a third season. "We don't end the show," Barbee said. "What we do, we did two endings. We shot two endings. And one of them basically just lets you know that everybody is OK." She added: "The other ending shows you exactly where we're going to go for the third season. ... I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger as much as I would say you say, 'Oh, OK, now I know where we're going to go. But if there's not going to be a third season, the other one puts sort of a nice emotionally satisfying point to it."

JERICHO returns next month with an episode that picks up the story from the season-one cliffhanger, in which the townspeople of the small Kansas hamlet--led by Skeet Ulrich, Ashley Scott and Lennie James--were preparing to go to war with neighboring New Bern. Barbee offered a few spoilers for the first episodes of the new season, "Reconstruction, Condor" and "Jennings & Rall." "We get into Jericho and reconstruction has begun," Barbee said. "The Cheyenne government is in town. They're rebuilding. People are getting jobs, people are getting cell phones, life is coming back to Jericho. But it's changed, because now there's this government, Cheyenne, and they have contractors who are working for them named Jennings & Rall, and ... this company ... [has] set up a storefront on Main Street. And they're going to be a big presence in our lives for the next season." Barbee said that the new season will take the show into new territory thematically. "The headline in the first season was about surviving the nuclear attack and saving the town," she said. "The second season is about saving the country and our way of life, our system of government. And then the natural progression s to have that be save the world for the third season."

JERICHO returns Feb. 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Thursday, 1/18

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

Apparently when it comes to television viewing there is American Idol, NFL Football and everything else. Neither was on last night, but we’ll still report the numbers anyway. CBS won the most viewers for the night, but FOX won the 18-49 demo. FOX is perhaps the only network with anything to crow about as the lineup of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics is vastly outperforming last year’s line up of ‘Til Death, The War at Home and The OC.

But, things being as they are the other networks, save for ABC and The CW will find something to crow about anyway. CBS can relish the dominance of CSI vs. Grey’s Anatomy when it comes to repeat episodes. Because in reruns, CSI got almost twice as many viewers. In fact, more people watched the rerun of CSI at 9pm than a new episode of Without a Trace at 10pm.

NBC (and probably the Donald) will crow because, well, Celebrity Apprentice and ER (yes, ER!) won the 18-49 demo between 9pm-11pm.

Liman's Jackson Bites aims to create "television-style programming for alternative distribution." Liman will have unspecified business partners in the venture.

The guild's interim agreement will mean that WGA writers can work on Jackson Bites projects.

"If the last strike is best remembered for the studios attempting to show they could create programming without writers, this could be the strike where the writers show they can do it without the studios," Liman said.

Jericho Season 2 info; no spoilers

Posted by Amy Vernon.

Well, I saw the first three episodes of Season 2 last night and they really are fantastic.

I have to admit, it felt weird, after so much time, to see new episodes of Jericho. It took me until about halfway through the first episode, “Reconstruction,” to really settle in. I think part of it was that, given the fact that the season’s story is 22 episodes worth compressed into seven, it took a little bit of the first ep to comfortably settle into the new direction the story’s taking.

I wanted to share some information about the episodes, but I promise none are true spoilers. They’re mostly cast tidbits, such as who’s in what episode. I thought long and hard about what I would reveal and what I wouldn’t, as I know many of you really don’t want to know spoilery stuff ahead of time.

Cultural Learnings Celebrates its First Anniversary

One year ago today, I started Cultural Learnings.

This sounds really startling when I say it aloud, but over the past month or so I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ve been doing this for an entire year. I really wish that this was falling during a less busy time of the year, because as it is I feel like I am doing this post a disservice. I should have spent a week on a retrospective post like the one I did for my three-month anniversary, before my blog became focused closer on television.

So, with one year behind us, it’s time to look forward to the next year (And there WILL be another year and more). I want to continue to offer content you enjoy, content I enjoy, and content which engages important issues. The Writers’ Strike is only one part of the television story - I am excited for the return of Lost and Battlestar Galactica, and of course the long anticipated return of Jericho, I could finally start blogging about Project Runway (It’ll be late, stupid Canadian broadcasting rights), and I’ll be back on the reality bandwagon with the February premiere of Survivor: Fans vs. Favourites.

Scary schism for scribes

Article by Carl DiOrio.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter.

But with a DGA contract deal considered imminent, speculation is heating up over the WGA's possible response to such a development. On strike since Nov. 5 and unable to secure their own new deal since starting on again-off again contract talks with the studios July 16, Hollywood writers initially might demur that what's good for directors isn't necessarily good for scribes.

Yet if the DGA, as expected, comes away with contract terms featuring significant gains in the all-important area of new-media compensation, WGA brass could face some rather immediate -- and potentially very public -- grumbling from powerful TV showrunners and top screenwriters if it insists on staying on strike.

Meanwhile, studio negotiators must grapple with their own knotty dilemma in deciding when, and how, to resume negotiations with the WGA.

I don't want to give away too much, but I can say that even with a quasi-national government in charge and society functioning again, things haven't gotten much safer for the residents of Jericho. By the end of the third episode, we've gotten hints that there are forces at work here just as threatening -- in the long run -- as the nuclear bombs.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 1/15

As expected, FOX’s season premiere of American Idol led the night with NFL playoff style numbers. The two hour premiere averaged 33.24 million viewers and a healthy 13.8/32 in the 18-49 demographic in the overnights (as always, subject to change).

Worth noting is that for all the talk of “strike effect” benefit for Idol, it actually had 4 million less viewers than last year’s season premiere and slipped 13% in the 18-49. The strike doesn’t appear to to be driving viewers to the show, and on top of it AI seems to have reached its peak ratings and is now on the long slide downward.

Ausiello: I'm hearing that this season's third episode will shed light on Jake's time in Iraq. And without spilling too much, something from his past has reared its ugly head in his present.

In related news, TVGuide.com's resident Jericho nut Megan Cherkezian just finished screening Episode 2, and she reluctantly graciously compiled the following teasers exclusively for AA readers.

• Emily learns of a disturbing change that will affect the nation's future.
• Eric is offered an important position.
• A big visitor arrives in Jericho, but will he be accepted?
• A death gets in the way of Jake's new plan.
• A familiar face comes back to Jericho, but no one's happy about it.

Ratings Erosion

Posted by Jericho Returns.

Source: Jericho Central.

Network TV already was facing ratings erosion. As Mr. Krehbiel demonstrates, more viewers have switched at least some of their attention to the web and other pursuits. What's more, an increasing number have armed themselves with ad-zapping DVRs -- so even if they watch, there's no guarantee some of them will see the ads.

Why are CBS, NBC and ABC Leaving Money On The Table?

Check the currency exchange rates today and you’ll see that $1 U.S. will buy you
.67 euros, 108 yen and 10.9 pesos.

I mention this only because it’s time for media companies to think about exchanging their current currency—impressions—for a much stronger currency in the digital marketplace.

Time-spent (as measured in seconds on digital platforms).

The question is, what is one second of a viewer’s time worth? As an industry, we’ve never had to deal with this before. The advertising business has been built on buying and selling impressions, not time-spent.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Monday, 1/14

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

NBC wins this Monday night both in overall viewers and in the 18-49 demographic. NBC’s Deal or No Deal was the night’s most watched show with 15 million viewers. American Gladiators also held up well and won the 8pm timeslot. CBS took 2nd overall and 3rd in the demo with repeats of all its Monday night sitcoms and a new episode of CSI: Miami.

Over on ABC, Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann holds up well in the 8pm slot, but everything else on the ABC lineup for the night flops. In its regular timeslot Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles did not do nearly as well as it did Sunday night after the football game when it had 18.29 million viewers and a 7.6/18 in the demo. Monday night at 9pm all it could muster was a 10.07 and a 4.3/10, losing to a rerun of CBS’ Two and a Half Men and Deal or No Deal in overall viewers and getting beat out by Deal or No Deal in the 18-49 demographic. It’s worth noting, however. that Sarah Connor built on the lead-in from Prison Break by over 2 million viewers. I’m guessing FOX is pleased with the results.

This Ain’t Pandora’s Box - The (Non-)Impact of the Jericho Screener Leak

Article by Myles McNutt.

Have you ever felt that your nose was just a faucet that wouldn’t shut off? It’s a bizarre and rather grotesque image, but “snot faucet” most aptly describes my weekend experience. It was unpleasant, sure, but by the end of the weekend it was mostly gone. There are some leaks, however, that are somewhat more volatile - these are the leaks that are, for better or for worse, not gone by the end of the weekend.

I speak, of course (As if a runny nose opening could lead to anything else), about the fact that the three-episode Jericho screen sent to critics over the past few weeks has become available online through less than legal means.

The Game Launch

Posted by staff.

Source: Tom Tooman Blog.

So the first thing that began this was a sticker. A rather mindblowing but deceptively simple looking thing. We gave away (not us actually) quite a few at ComiCon in July of ’ 07, then the people that make the game mailed them to a few people, some of whom have acknowledged the receipt, others have not. This is of course part of the story, then the slow burn of the game began. Like a strange unchecked fire, the story arched through a rather unique board called Unfiction, where stories like this are explored, poked, debated. These players/interpreters began exploring everything to do with the sticker they could find. They tested it in scanners (it didn’t read) they added numbers, they tested the possibility it was a real UPC product, but then, eureka, the realized the numbers in the stickers read as an IP address and voila, a doorway opened. Now even cooler, the barcode was actually a code, a form of morse, that taught the user the password. And bang, they were in. The star pattern is cool as well, though no one has figured out what that means. Yet.

Nielsen: Local TV To Shift To Commercial Ratings

Article by Michael Learmonth.

Source: Silicon Alley Insider.

Nielsen Media Research is informing local TV clients that it is close to a decision on whether to convert local ratings to the same standard now used for national TV ratings. Mediapost reports that in a letter to stations Friday, Nielsen said it is considering a switch to "live-plus-three" commercial ratings for local TV, meaning ads would be sold based on the ratings for commercials, and that commercials watched within three days on digital video recorders would count.

Some of the big station groups have been agitating for the switch in order to standardize the ratings formula for, say, a CBS-owned station with the CBS Television Network. Local TV is expected to have a robust 2008 with record political spending driving strong growth, even as overall growth declines

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Sunday, 1/13

Posted by Robert Seidman.

The primetime portion of the playoff game featuring the New York Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys ran almost an hour and led FOX to a dominating nightly win with a whopping 37.27 million viewers. Please note, overnight results for sports programs are especially subject to changes. The game led to very good numbers and impressive 18-49 demo results for the debut of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles which airs again tonight at 9pm in its normal timeslot.

The WGA strike killed the 65th Annual Golden Globe Awards so NBC aired a toned-down press conference style announcement of the winners which generated little viewer interest. Part one of Comanche Moon, the last in the Lonesome Dove series of miniseries performed very well for CBS from 9p-11p.

The DGA and AMPTP held their third consecutive day of formal negotiations Monday at AMPTP headquarters amid expectations that a tentative pact could emerge within the next few days, with significant improvements in how helmers are compensated for new-media work and reuse.

Writers Strike Takes a $300 Million Hostage

Article by By Claude Brodesser-Akner and Brian Steinberg.

Posted by N2N2 on the CBS Message Board.

The writers-strike takedown of the Golden Globes last week has those who participate in the $300 million-Oscar economy shaking in their red-soled Louboutins.

The continuing action by the Writers Guild of America helped scotch the always-bawdy Golden Globes ceremony broadcast on NBC, because the Globes producer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, couldn't negotiate an interim deal with the striking scribes. That could end up costing the network some $10 million to $15 million if Golden Globes advertisers ask for cash back -- the event brought in some $27 million in revenue last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

Now all eyes are on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' much bigger annual award ceremony, set to air on Walt Disney Co.'s ABC on Feb. 24.

CBS's Moonves To Cave on Writers Strike?

Article by Henry Blodget.

This is so thin it doesn't even qualify as a rumor, but it's a weekend, so here goes: A couple of Hollywood insiders told us last night they're hearing that the CBS's Les Moonves is agitating to have the studios reopen talks with the striking writers.

Moonves: The weakest link?

This would make sense. As Michael Learmonth argues, CBS is more dependent on scripted shows than reality- and Superbowl-stoked Fox, and, unlike NBC, it doesn't have a global conglomerate's financials in which to bury its pain.

DGA 'shouting' for pact

Article by Cynthia Littleton.

Can "shouting distance" be traversed in a matter of days?

Showbiz insiders were hopeful at the prospect that the Directors Guild of America could reach a tentative contract pact with the majors as early as this week, after DGA leaders spent Saturday and Sunday in formal contract negotiations with reps for the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Nobody's saying it explicitly, but the vibe in the biz is that the deadline the AMPTP member companies face for breaking the stalemate with the WGA and getting the town back to work is dictated by the Feb. 24 Academy Awards. If the industry's biggest and glitziest celebration of itself is torpedoed by labor strife, a la Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, many predict that the turmoil in showbiz could extend well into the second half of the year.

Sweeps a Patchwork in February

Article by James Hibbard.

The February sweep, goes the annual industry consensus, is the weird one.

With the Writers Guild of America strike against the networks and studios in full swing, this time the description “weird” doesn’t even cut it. Network schedules are going to be a patchy make-shift slate of repeats, reality and occasional scripted originals, making the ratings data generated during the sweep less useful than ever.

“We’re not getting blown out of any nights. We’re hanging in there in pretty well,” said Kelly Kahl, senior executive VP of programming operations at CBS.

Mr. Kahl added that he’s impressed with the eight-episode second season of cult favorite “Jericho,” which he’s been able to schedule against nothing but repeats on NBC and ABC due to the strike.

“With the short season order, these episodes are flying,” he said. “It’s like boom-boom-boom; the show moves like a freight train.”

With new episodes for all three of its Friday night dramas, CBS easily had the most overall viewers and the most viewers in the 18-49 demographic. Ghost Whisperer, Moonlight and Numb3rs all won their respective timeslots in most viewers and in the 18-49 demo. Over on the Mouse network, hardly anybody was tuning in for reruns of Grey’s Anatomy and the Cashmere Mafia, or for that matter, 20/20.

ABC shared last place with The CW. The CW and Friday Night Smackdown! had the least overall viewers, but ABC had the least viewers in the 18-49 demo. FOX ran with reruns of Bones and House and wound up in 3rd for the night. NBC’s lineup of 1 vs. 100, Friday Night Lights and Las Vegas landed the peacock network in 2nd place, but a rerun of House bested a new Friday Night Lights.

CBS took the most viewers and ABC took the 18-49 demographic on the last night where an original Grey’s Anatomy faces off with an original episode of CSI (it was the last first-run episode for each show). As is typical, CSI narrowly won the timeslot in terms of overall viewers with Grey’s Anatomy winning the 18-49 demographic decisively. In the 8pm hour, FOX was strong with Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which beat out ABC’s Ugly Betty in total viewers, with Ugly Betty winning the hour in the 18-49 demo. NBC’s My Name is Earl was strong in the demo, but 30 Rock lost about 1.7 million viewers from Earl’s lead-in. At this point, Gorman and I may be the only ones still watching 30 Rock.

CBS easily dominated the 10pm hour with Without a Trace decisively winning the most viewers, and tying for the 18-49 demo lead with ER.

George Clooney Offers To Set Up "Mediation Panel" to Solve WGA Strike

Article by Nikki Finke.

Source: Deadline Hollywood Daily.

Hollywood's Triple-A list actors have started becoming integrally involved in trying to solve the Writers Guild strike against the Hollywood CEOs. I've just been told that George Clooney today is volunteering to personally set up a so-called "mediation panel" including himself and with plans to ask Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and John Wells (the executive producer of ER and a controversial ex-WGA president) to be part of it, plus 3 or 4 bigwigs who are siding with the producers. The offer came in a phone call today with Harvey Weinstein who promptly volunteered to be part of the panel. Clooney suggested its purpose should be to oversee the talks and tell the WGA as each term is bargained "you have to live with this and get over it," and tell the AMPTP "you have to live with that and get over it", Weinstein quoted George as saying. It's also Clooney's idea that everybody would be locked in the room together and not leave until the deal is done.

Moonves Optimistic About CBS' Future

CBS HAS NO MAKEGOODS INVENTORY problem this season--but it will see lower overall revenue for this broadcast year, while shelling out even lower production costs. For a beleaguered industry, that's tantamount to good news.

"In terms of the near term, we'll finish the TV season just fine," said CBS Corp. president/CEO Les Moonves, during CitiGroup's Annual Global Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications Conference. "Obviously, revenue will be down because ratings are down," he said, "but our costs of producing original programs will be down more."

The writers' strike continues for TV networks and studios. But Moonves is hopeful. "I'm guardedly optimistic it will be over in the next few months," he said.

Terminator and Jericho--Science Fiction as a Preparedness Motivational Tool

I have hopes that this series (along with"Jericho"), will in some small way help get people to "think outside the box" about the fragility of our modern society and motivate them to prepare for more inimical times. But perhaps I'm putting too much faith in the "bread and circuses" TV-viewing crowd.

Citi Media: Leslie Moonves, CEO, CBS; More Digital Acquisitions; Internet A ‘Friend’ To TV

Article by Joseph Weisenthal.

Source: paidcontent.org.

The very first thing CBS (NYSE: CBS) CEO Leslie Moonves told the investors at Citi’s 18th Annual Global Entertainment, Media & Telecommunications Conference: “Our stock is undervalued.” With CBS stock sitting near its year lows, that statement set the tone for his presentation, during which he denied that the economy is having a negative effect on the company’s business. Instead, he assured that as of Q4 every one of its businesses is exceeding expectations. The stock moved up nearly 2.5 percent today on what was generally an up day for the market. But the stock is down almost 10 percent year to date and nearly 30 percent off its highs last summer.

-- Strike: Moonves is hopeful that talks will start up again soon, and suggested that “there are some steps being taken” on this front. As for the timeline, he’s “guardedly optimistic that it will be over in the next few months.” In the short-to-medium term, the strike, he claims, isn’t having a negative effect. Note that last year, the standard line was that major media companies would be fine through at least the end of 2007.

FITV: Small town reputation

Article by Fiona Gardiner.

Source: Thunder Bay's Source (Canada).

The small town has a strange reputation. Teens strive to escape it for the big city. Residents bemoan its inherent “poor relative” status in provincial politics. But those who live under the big city lights seem to have a more warped perception. Personally, I blame TV because for decades, television has romanticized the small town while still mocking it.

It’s been the setting of wondrously funny and poignant programs mainly because they are so unrealistic in their depiction of small town life.

Meanwhile, set in a small Kansas town after a nuclear disaster, Jericho is returning to CBS after fans campaigned to bring it back. Why? Since most Americans live in Small Town, U.S.A., imagine the viewer pride as Jericho’s townies rise out of the ashes amid the destruction of corporate America.

But writers create a small town reality that’s separate from the rest of the world in its news, views, and attitudes. It exists in its own little bubble.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Wednesday, 1/9

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

We’re sure it will be brief, but the reign of the Peacock continues for now. NBC took the night in both total viewers and the 18-49 demographic, though NBC, CBS and ABC were all competitive in the demo. NBC scored with Deal or No Deal (which completely beatdown CBS’ Power of 10), the broadcast network return of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (which had been airing on cable on USA) and a new episode of Law & Order. CBS scored well with Criminal Minds which easily won the 9pm timeslot. A new episode of CSI: NY won the 10pm battle over the new Law & Order, but was not as dominant as Criminal Minds.

Over on ABC, the jury is still out on Wife Swap, but Supernanny may have some legs - it continues to perform well in the 18-49 demo. Cashmere Mafia on the other hand, does not have any ratings legs. The 10pm timeslot didn’t do anything to improve the show’s fortunes and it placed last (out of 3) at 10pm by far. FOX ran with reruns of its sitcoms and The CW aired new episodes of Crowned and Gossip Girl, which had its best performance in weeks

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 1/8

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

Led by season-high ratings for Law & Order: SVU and continued solid performance by The Biggest Loser 5, NBC easily had the most overall viewers and the most viewers in the 18-49 demographic. With a lineup of repeats, FOX came in second in both viewers and the demo, followed by CBS, ABC and The CW. Poor performance by ABC’s lineup of sitcoms and Cashmere Mafia landed it dead last (yes, even worse than The CW) in the demo. The CW benefited (relatively speaking) from pretty solid performance with the season premiere of One Tree Hill. Over on CBS, a repeat of NCIS was the night’s second most-watched program overall, but the 34th annual The People’s Choice Awards from 9p-11p did not fare well. The award show’s numbers dwindled to a record low with an average of 6.0 million viewers

10 Shows to (Hopefully) Watch in 2008 - #1 - Jericho

Article by Miles McNutt.

Source: Cultural Learnings.

When it came to selecting which series would be number one on Cultural Learnings’ list of 10 Shows to (Hopefully) Watch in 2008, I had to make a decision that perhaps doesn’t reflect my own personal taste. In terms of shows I’m most looking forward to watching, I can’t possibly rank anything above Lost or Battlestar Galactica, two series I can’t get enough of. However, last summer it became very clear that in covering TV it is important to not just use your own opinions to guide you, but also to recognize shows and fans who go above and beyond, and whose impact on television as a whole is sure to be one of the biggest stories of the year. As a result, here is the number one selection.

#1 Jericho

A year ago, I had written off Jericho. After losing interest shortly before the series went on hiatus in the fall, I was barely paying attention when the series returned in February only to struggle against tough competition. As its fanbase eroded, and as CBS left it off of its fall schedule, I was amongst those who rationalized its demise - it was never a strong demo performer, CBS can fill the slot with CSI Reruns and get better ratings, and the show never really set the world on fire anyways. And now, half a year later, I believe that Jericho is the most intriguing series to be airing in 2008.

Just as the Ohio State Buckeyes were no match for the Tigers of LSU, none of the competition was a match for the National Championship Bowl Game on FOX. The Tiger’s mastery of the Buckeyes netted FOX over 21.5 million viewers and FOX was just as dominant in the 18-49 demo. That said, American Gladiators seemed to hold up well. I’ll have to see how Deal or No Deal performs against non-sports competition in its new time slot before weighing in on that, but the season-premiere of NBC’s Medium beat out everything in the 10pm timeslot (the comeback of ABC’s October Road and a repeat of CSI: Miami) other than the Bowl game.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Sunday, 1/6

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

Football playoffs overrun positioned CBS for the night’s win in total viewers and earned the Eye a tie (with ABC) in the 18-49 demographic. Because of the football overrun, all CBS data is half-hourly and it looks like a lot of people stayed on board to watch Roger Clemens look us in the eye and lie to us about how he never used streroids on 60 Minutes. It would be folly to dream we’ve heard the last of Roger’s denial.

A new episode of Desperate Houswives earned the best showing of non-football programing, but the happiest person of the night may be NBC’s Jeff Zucker. The season-premiere of American Gladiators performed extremely well in the 18-49 demo. Gladiators is back on tonight as the lead-in for Deal or No Deal so we should have a better idea tomorrow regarding what kind of ratings legs it has. Over at the Mouse, they’re probably not as happy with the preview of Cashmere Mafia.

'Lost,' 'Jericho,' 'Torchwood' and more: A look at the winter TV season

Article by Maureen Ryan.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Here are a few highlights of the early 2008 TV schedule:

* Time to go nuts as a fan favorite returns: "Jericho" was dead as a doornail last spring, but like the flinty survivors of the town of Jericho, fans weren't about to let themselves be defeated. They organized with lightning speed and, after shipping thousands of pounds of nuts to the network (it's a reference to a defiant cry in the Season 1 finale), they got CBS to bring the show back. It returns with seven new episodes 9 p.m. Feb. 12. "Gray Anderson [Michael Gaston] steps up as the mayor and is helping to coordinate with the Cheyenne government to get [Jericho] up and running again," executive producer Carol Barbee said in a 2007 interview. "Jake [Green] … is very wary of who they are [in Cheyenne] and he ends up leading the Jericho residents in a different direction at one point."

On The Eleventh Day Of Christmas

Article by Brent McKee.

Source: I Am A Child Of Television.

On the eleventh day of Christmas (plus a few hours), my true love (Television) gave to me....eleven Odds and Ends.

# 9 Nuts to you CBS:
That was the response of Jericho fans to the announcement that the series would only run one season. They sent over twenty tons of nuts to CBS as well as flooding the network with letters and emails. The nuts were a reference to the last line in the final episode in which Jake Greene, leading the outnumbered and outgunned defenders of Jericho, Kansas against the forces of a larger town responded to a demand to surrender with General McAuliffe's response to the German demand to surrender Bastogne: "Nuts." Commenting on the situation, CBS president Les Moonves said, "You have to tip your hat to their ability to get attention and make some noise." The campaign had a positive result. CBS first announced that they would "provide closure" for fans (something they wouldn't do for most cancelled series) and later announced an eight episode "mini" season to air as a mid-season replacement with the possibility for more episodes if ratings justified it.

The campaign also spawned imitators. Fans of Veronica Mars were encouraged to send Mars Bars and/or marshmallows to The CW before June 15, 2007 to get the network to bring the series back as a mid-season replacement. It didn't work despite the fact that 1400 pounds of Mars Bars (which have been discontinued in the US), Almond Snickers Bars, and Marshmallows were sent to the network. United Hollywood is encouraging fans to send pencils to the six major Hollywood moguls – Les Moonves (CBS), Jeffrey Immelt (NBC/Universal), Rupert Murdoch (FOX), Jeffrey L Bewkes (Time-Warner), Robert Iger (Disney), Sumner Redstone (Viacom) – to pressure them to settle the Writers Strike. At present just over 650,000 pencils have been sent to "The Moguls" and just look at the effect it's had.

Those not watching the gridiron were surprisingly political, pushing ABC’s New Hampshire Debate ratings to second place for the night along with the network. CBS and Fox had neither pigskin nor politics and had to be content with mere survival.

"The inmates are taking over the asylum,” is what MGM founder Richard Rowland said when United Artists was formed in 1919 to break the studio cartel with the crazy idea that actors and filmmakers could do what the majors could not.

Now Tom Cruise, a Maverick once again like his “Top Gun” moniker, and partner Paula Wagner will take on the rebellious UA mantle as they are in talks directly with the Writers Guild that would make it the first big film company to resume regular production during the 2007/2008 Writers Strike

Jericho in Entertainment Weekly

Article by Lynette Rice.

Source: Entertainment Weekly, January 11, 2008 issue.

Back from the dead for a limited engagement, the postapocalyptic drama picks up where it left off last May -- with Jake (Skeet Ulrich) and Hawkins (Lennie James) facing long odds in a fierce battle over salt and turf against the New Bern townsfolk. "We blew most of our money on this," admits exec producer Carol Barbee of the clash. "There's a huge payoff." Enter Esai Morales, who joins the cast as a military man who helps end the fighting and reestablish order. As for the future of Jericho the show, "With the strike going on and pilots getting derailed, Jericho is in a unique position if ratings are good," says Barbee. Start sending in those nuts now, people.

SHOCKER! WGA To Announce Side Deal With Tom Cruise's United Artists; Now Studio Moguls Mad At MGM's Sloan

Article by Nikki Finke.

This is big. This is BIG! Because WGA sources just told me that the guild has clinched an "Independent Agreement" with Tom Cruise's and Paula Wagner's re-started United Artists. This now means that small and struggling UA has a leg up on every other Hollywood studio because it will be able to hire the striking writers. This is to date the first so-called side deal cut by the WGA with a movie studio since the strike began on November 3rd as part of the guild's newly articulated "divide and conquer" strategy.

Fox and NBC finished in a near dead heat for Thursday, January 3, with Fox edging NBC by the slimmest of margins for average viewers, but tied in the adults 18-49 demo. CBS was competitive, but ABC continued its recent also ran trend as its reruns got crushed.

While a repeat of CSI was the evening’s most watched show, the 18-49 demo crown was taken by the premiere of Celebrity Apprentice, followed closely by The Orange Bowl and another Deal or No Deal.

jericho in TV Guide

Article by staff.

Source: TV Guide, January 7-13, 2008 issue.

The world will be different when TV's favorite nuclear holocaust survivors return for a seven-episode run. Jericho town father Johnston Green (Gerald McRaney) is dead. Prodigal son Jake (Skeet Ulrich) is back together with childhood sweetheart Emily (Ashley Scott). Oh, and there's a new federal government operating out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. It even has its own redesigned flag with a lot fewer stars than Old Glory.

How did you feel about the fanatical response of viewers who pressured CBS to bring back the series? I think it's great for people to show they care. We've been in sort of an apathetic society. It's proven to people you can make a difference.

One of the concessions necessary to come back for another season was fewer shooting days per episode. Will it be tougher to give the fans the kind of show they expect? It will be harder. But I like being the underdog. We were the show that was not going to suceed. We beat that. We were on against the two biggest reality shows of the year.

What should we expect this season on Jericho? Much, much more action. A normal season runs 22 episodes, but we're only doing seven, so we compressed the action to get more bang for the buck. This weird alternative government thing is happening, and Esai Morales plays an Army major who comes in to take control, and he and I end up working together to bring order. But there's no order in a place like Jericho.

Jericho in February Sci Fi Magazine

Article by staff.

Spource: Sci Fi Magazine, February 2008 issue, page 17.

"Where Season Two picks up from is that battle that we've left our characters in, and in the first seven minutes of Episode 1 we pay off that battle," says executive producer Karim Zreik. "We show you what happened, which side was victorious, and pick up two weeks after the war, after that battle."

The Cheyenne government is helping Jericho rebuild and get back on its feet. "One of the main characters for next season is played by Esai Morales. He plays Maj. Beck, who is one of the military leaders that comes in to help our town rebuild itself," says Zreik. "What he brings is this viewpoint of what happened out there. He gives his version of the attacks to our townspeople and gives us a backstory of what the country is now doing to help rebuild itself."

Upcoming stories include what happens when the corporation of Jennings and Rall ally themselves with the new Cheyenne government. And "There are characters that we met briefly in season one that come back for these seven episodes,' he says.

Look for the mythology to take center stage in this mini-second season, says Zreik. "Who was behind these attacks? How did they go about pulling them off? What was Hawkin's role in all this? Is he really telling the truth? What is his investment in this town? Why Jericho? We're peeling more layers off of that story. You will get to see more storylines with Jake and Hawkins together . . . Both of these characters take a huge turn in these seven episodes."

And there's romance in the air. "Jake and Emily are together, we play that. They're back in love and dating." And Mimi and Stanley and Eric and Mary Bailey will remain couples. "Lots of romance. Lot of love. You can still find love after an attack," says Zreik.

Posted by Robert Seidman.

NBC took the most viewers on the second night of the new year, but finished 3rd in the 18-49 demographic (FOX #1, ABC #2). CBS finished fourth in overall viewers and the 18-49 demographic with NBC’s Deal or No Deal whipping up on the second season premiere of The Power of 10 over on CBS. The two hour season premiere of Law & Order performed well on NBC. Football continues to rule the 18-49 demographic with the annual airing of the Fiesta Bowl winning the demo for FOX. Supernanny which premiered on ABC looks like it also may have some legs when it comes to the 18-49 demo.

The Dis-United States

The second series of Jericho is scheduled to premiere on CBS on February 12th. The post-apocalyptic drama follows the progress of a small Kansas town as it struggles to come to terms with the destruction of 22 major US cities. Series 1 ended on a cliff-hanger with the people of Jericho defending themselves against an invasion by superior forces from the neighbouring town of New Bern. Series 2 picks up the story, as the battle is brought to a halt by the intervention of troops from the Allied States of America, a regional grouping of former western US states rising out of the chaos, one of several coalitions all claiming to be the legitimate government.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 1/1

New Year’s Bowl games ruled the television world and a bad game between Georgia and Hawaii (OK, I guess we know the truth about Hawaii now) in the Sugar Bowl was enough to win Fox the most overall viewers and the most viewers in the 18-49 demographic. NBC’s couples-based season premiere of The Biggest Loser held its own. ABC season premieres of Just for Laughs and According to Jim did not fare as well. Still a little early to decide whether it was just a bad idea to bring these shows back on New Year’s night or to bring them back at all, I’m leaning towards the latter though.

We drop hints about “real life” as we attend to our daily business of living but we have all been elsewhere and wondered: “What is going on right now? Who is watching the fort? Some of us have gotten ourselves into a fair amount of trouble over our loyalties. We have all heard and maybe made the argument that this is just a TV show and we should take care to keep it in context. But I do not believe for one minute that this has all been about a TV show.
