A new study comparing broadcast TV viewership with the level of social interaction that takes place around specific TV shows on the Web demonstrates that the two are not tightly correlated – if not completely unrelated. Networked Insights, a market intelligence company, compared the Nielsen ratings with its own formula for measuring social interactions around TV shows – things like embedding a video, joining a group, or linking to the show from a social networking site.

Interforum announcement and People's Choice Award nominations.
Article by Joe Mandese. Source: Media Post Publications. On the eve of meetings this week with its national clients in New York and Los Angeles, Nielsen made two important announcements, including a decision to delay a controversial plan to begin measuring online media usage in some households that are part of its television "currency" panel. The second announcement was a disclosure that Nielsen has been grossly misestimating the household coverage for many smaller cable networks for years because it has not been able to identify when new, "digital tier" channels are added, or removed by satellite TV households.

Within the whirlwind of negative news regarding the economy and the advertising outlook, I found a significant, welcome trend in the IAB’s recent revenue report covering the first half of this year. I’m scratching my head trying to understand why more hasn’t been made of this, because it portends hugely positive things for the online space.
Editor: This article is a bit technical, but certainly is good news. Convergence of internet and television won't happen until the advertisers see the value in the internet. This article says the big ad spenders are already on the internet.

Sumner Redstone is no stranger to drama and crises. The media mogul behind MTV, Paramount Pictures and CBS has shrugged off disputes with film stars, family members and chief executives and survived, albeit only narrowly, a hotel blaze in Boston in 1979. Now, however, the octogenarian is facing a battle with his bankers in which he may be forced into selling Viacom, MTV's owner, or CBS.

Why does all this matter to those who are not part of the "FNL" faithful? Because TV fans are very likely to see many more of this type of deal in the future. As last week's premiere-week ratings made clear, broadcasters continue to have a hard time hanging on to viewers in the face of competition from cable networks, the Internet, video games, DVDs and other media.

About two weeks ago several rangers were banned from posting on the CBS Board for posting information they felt we would be interested in. These postings did not violate the Terms of Service and were a source of encouragement for us. There was nothing warranting deletion. Two fans who were trying to post this information are now banned. Worse yet, two other fans that had nothing to do with this incident are banned, too. They are dawn_usa, dbalcer1, maybei and myvibesmom. It is time to try and correct this injustice. It is time to reinstate them to the CBS Community.
