If you jump through a few hoops you may be able to watch new premium channel Epix—for 72 hours. Online. The channel, launching Friday with only Verizon FiOS as a distributor, needs to generate consumer interest. You can’t do that with a very private beta or a service that can be used only by subscribers of multi-channel video providers who have a deal. The joint venture of Viacom (NYSE: VIA), Paramount, MGM and Lions Gate started offering some tokens this week through industry trades. Now it’s quietly offering weekend passes that are good for 72 hours for people who sign up and give the name of their satellite, cable or telecom service.

Nielsen Co. has decided on a plan to install Internet meters alongside TV meters in its entire TV measurement panel over the next year, with the possibility of providing a so-called "single source" measurement of television programming viewed across the two media as soon as 2011. The timing of the plan, and a final decision to integrate the measurement of the two media, ultimately will be decided by Nielsen's clients, but the decision to begin a system-wide deployment of Internet meters in its entire TV meter sample was effectively decided Friday, following a "special" meeting with its most influential clients to brief them on the concept, and to gauge their interests and concerns.

Appointment-based TV viewing is on the wane, with more people choosing to spend a weekend catching up on a month’s worth of episodes of their favorite show. Problem is, most networks currently can’t monetize those time-shifted views once they’ve passed the three-day mark. That has to change, according to John Landgraf, president and GM of FX Networks.

Last month, Viacom (NYSE: VIA) CEO Phillipe Dauman confidently said he expected new premium network Epix to add more distribution partners before its fall launch but the Oct. 30 launch date announced this week still has only one launch partner: Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS. The joint venture of Viacom, Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate is scrambling to change the picture for its would-be competitor to HBO, Showtime and Starz. A source familiar with the situation tells paidContent that financial terms have been reached with one distributor—not a cable operator or AT&T (NYSE: T) U-Verse, which leaves DirecTV (NYSE: DTV) or Dish—and that hopes are it can be signed for an announcement in tandem with the launch. Another deal, which would be the network’s first with a cable operator, is still stuck on the financials and isn’t a good bet to be finalized before the launch.

Back in July, we confirmed for you here that Verizon had reached a deal with EPIX, a new movie channel with a broad and impressive collection of well-known titles that will be made available to FiOS TV subscribers. Since then, we started a free preview of EPIX on our video-on-demand service, which I hope you've been enjoying. I know I have - they offer an incredible selection of movies, with over 100 films in HD. "Godfather Weekend" anyone? EPIX on demand is free until the end of this month.

Millions of "E.R." fans know actress Emily Rose as Dr. Tracy Martin, while sci-fi fans of "Jericho" know her as Trish Merrick. For gamers, Rose is the voice (and in Uncharted 2, the body) of Elena Fisher. The actress worked with Naughty Dog to bring back Elena and introduce a lover's triangle, of sorts, to the chemistry in Sony's PlayStation 3 sequel.

At an Oct. 16 meeting, Nielsen will open a conversation with clients, hoping it will help content owners figure out how to gain real compensation for the material they make available online and to mobile devices. And crucially for the measurement outfit, it also wants to make sure it remains at the forefront of the effort.

Fans of the CBS-terminated TV series JERICHO will recognize the name "Ravenwood." This was the ruthless mercenary force used by the illegitimate federal government at Cheyenne to subjugate the citizens of Kansas in the aftermath of a massive nuclear attack against two dozen American cities. As with much of JERICHO's superbly written story line, Ravenwood reflected real-world entities. Private mercenary forces have been used extensively throughout the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as in many other theaters. And as JERICHO correctly depicted, these "private contractors" have largely operated without oversight or accountability. (Can anyone say, "Blackwater"?) For the most part, the American people are unfamiliar with these mercenary forces, because they normally operate in foreign theaters of war. JERICHO put them on the streets of U.S. cities. Now it looks like JERICHO was more prophecy than fiction.

Let’s face it: most Americans live in a world of false security. This is somewhat understandable, given the fact that the majority of the U.S. population was born after 1945. Few remember the dangers and hardships of World War II; fewer still remember the Great Depression. Few Americans know what it’s like to not have some sort of “supercenter” nearby with shelves stocked with every kind of food imaginable, twenty-four hours a day. Few know what life was like before there were restaurants of all sizes and types on virtually every street corner in America. And only a handful remembers when most roads were unpaved, or when sports were truly a pastime and not a megabuck obsession.

Mark Greenberg, of Epix, attended. The article had an interesting paragraph about Epix:
"A new piece in the distribution puzzle could be Epix, the new HD television channel and online streaming service launching next month from Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions, MGM and Paramount, with product from Goldwyn. These studios are opting out of the old pay-TV window–the other studios are still collecting millions from Starz, HBO, and Showtime. (Until they expire.) Epix is buying some films, licensing others, accessing pictures earlier, supplying behind-the-scenes set interviews, giving consumers on-demand movies on the computer, cell phone, TV. They hope to engage a younger demo with their website. They’ll have 3000 titles–only Netflix has so many. They bought The Cove and plan to buy more docs."

The modern poster-child for a show that's "gone too soon" is Jericho. The impassioned fans buried CBS under a ton of nuts, which got the show renewed for a shortened second season. Your mileage of the quality of that season may vary, but the fact remains that the fans did something none of these internet campaigns today will be able to.

Things were looking good for Carol Barbee this fall: she was an executive producer on two new prime-time series. But the first was “The Beautiful Life,” so she earned the more unusual distinction of having one of her shows canceled before the other even got on the air.

The explosion of ways people watch television is confounding the media industry, which has relied for decades on the Nielsen ratings but now must adapt to the realities of the Internet and on-demand video.
