'Jericho' Set to be a Highlight of 2008

Article by Oscar Dahl.

Source: Buddy TV.

Let's say the strike isn't settled by Christmas. Let's say it's not even settled by the time summer hits. What, then? What do fans of scripted content have to look forward to in 2008? The pickings will be slim, but there are going to be some glimmers of hope for scripted drama lovers. Fans of half hour comedy, I'm afraid, are out of luck. Unless The New Adventures of Old Christine does it for you (there are eight or so episodes set to air), there's not much out there. However, in the drama department there are a few rare series who will air their entire uninterrupted seasons in 2008. One of those is Jericho.

Remember to vote for "What series are you most looking forward to in 2008?".

Online Measurement Debate Presages TV's, Experts Suggest A Hybrid Solution

Article by Joe Mandese.

Source: Media Daily News.

A CRITICAL DEBATE ABOUT HOW to best measure the audiences of online media outlets - the ad industry's traditional panel-based methods, or newer census-based approaches - will ultimately determine the future of television ratings, and the TV advertising marketplace. That's what some of the online industry's leading researchers suggested to a packed audience during a day-long forum on audience measurement hosted by the Interactive Advertising Bureau in New York.

The November sweeps are officially over and the repeats rained down on us, but we better get used to it!  CBS won the night both in viewers and the 18-49 demographic and although NBC was #4 in viewers, it captured second in the demo.   ER even captured a demo win in the 10pm slot.

EXCLUSIVE: Moguls Supposed To Present Better Offer To Writers At Talks Today

Article by Niki Finke.

Soource: Deadline Hollywood Daily.

I was told last night by a top Hollywood CEO that the moguls had decided to allow AMPTP to put on the negotiating table; a sweetened deal at Talks Day #4 today. The producers are trying to put something on the table tomorrow [Thursday] that will jaw this loose. It will include streaming and EST [electronic sell-through] and all the rest, the source said specifically.

The problem is I can't confirm yet that the AMPTP has indeed ;bettered its offer today. But this is the sweetened proposal everyone has been talking about since before this new round of talks resumed.

URGENT1 Talks Day #4; Producers Present new Media Proposals

I'm told WGA negotiators are still waiting for the other "half" of the AMPTP's New Media proposals (the half that presumably contains the terms on ESTs, electronic sell-throughs) which agent Bryan Lourd said should be in their hands by Tuesday if not before. Then the writers will make a counter-offer to producers on Tuesday. Here's the WGA West and East email to members critical of today's AMPTP offers:

The "Digital Video Barometer" survey of more than 270 industry executives find that 90% believe that Internet distribution will account for at least 40% of all video content by 2012. Twenty-three percent believe the Internet will account for 60% of content while 9% think that the Internet will have 80% of video share.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Tuesday, 11/27

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

Indy racecar ace Helio Castroneves beat down Marie Osmond and Spice Girl, Mel B. to win the two hour Dancing with the Stars finale.  The ratings were ginormous, and as a bonus I’ve included the half-hour breakout as well as the aggregate total.

A couple of other notes: nice to see A Charlie Brown Christmas which is almost as old as I am still has some juice and won the 18-49 demographic for the 8p-9p hour.  Even with the huge ratings for DWTS, my favorite show on broadcast television, House, won the 18-49 demo for the 9p-10p hour.  CBS struggles for viewers in the 18-49 demo on this final Tuesday of the November sweeps, and CBS newcomer Cane is gasping for air.

Who Should Be Top Newsmakers Of 2007?

Article by Michael Hinman.

Source: SyFy Portal.

Posted by Callisto925 at jericho Rally Point.

Now that Thanksgiving is over in the United States, and we're heading straight for Christmas and the end of 2007, it's time to take a look at who were the biggest newsmakers of 2007.

Each year, I identify the five or six people, groups, shows, or whatever else defines a noun as being the top newsmakers for the past 12 months. This is not a contest about the number of news stories they had written about them, but on who or what influenced the genre this year.

As we do every year, we're looking for your input on who you feel should be included in the top newsmakers list. This could be people like Ronald D. Moore, who has been featured in the past. It could be "Chuck" that showed you can put comedy into the genre and it works. It could be the Jericho fans who successfully saved the show. It could even be William Shatner who was snubbed from the most recent Star Trek movie.

Leave it to showbiz types to turn picket lines into street theater -- and quite the social scene.

NBC to Use TiVo's TV Viewership Data

Article by Stephanie Kang.

Source: Wall Street Journal.

General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal has become the first major TV broadcaster to strike a deal with TiVo Inc. for the right to use TiVo's TV viewership research and interactive advertising products.

The agreement, announced today, reflects rising demand in the TV industry for detailed audience viewing information. TiVo, a provider of digital video recorders, about a year ago started offering advertisers second-by-second ratings of programs and commercials based on the viewing habits of its subscribers, as well as other services. Earlier this month, the Alviso, Calif., company added demographic data about the viewers themselves, such as age, income, marital status and ethnicity.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Monday, 11/26

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source. TV By the Numbers.

ABC took the night in viewers, but tied with CBS in the 18-49 demo. NBC on the strength of an improving Heroes as it heads towards its mid-season (now perhaps full season) finale and an improving (and renewed) Chuck performed nicely in the demo as well. Samantha Who? moving up 1/2 hour to 9pm held her own, although losing ~3 million viewers from the previous week in the 9:30 slot still fared far better than ABC newcomers Notes from the Underbelly and October Road. ABC made up for this with a season high in viewers for Dancing with the Stars.

Any of you network wonks, please feel free to chime in on this topic: why do you hold so steadfastly to giving a rat’s behind about “lead-in”? With soooo many shows either losing ~50% of their lead-in or bulding on the lead-in by ~50%, uh…what difference does it really make? Enlighten me!

In fact, the AMPTP reps for the studios and networks showed up to the first day's negotiating session since the WGA strike began November 5th with what was described to me as "a very comprehensive proposal which laid out to all the entire roadmap to the deal. Over the course of the session, the producers addressed every single issue, and the writers listened and kept getting up to caucus."

We have jobs and classes and families and pets as well as our fandom-related hobbies. What's more, because fandom acts as a large, loosely-knit community, we can spread information and gather help with just a quick post or email, and when that particular power is turned towards helping others, we bring out something else the get-a-lifers don't see: fandom's unlimited capacity for giving."

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Thursday, 11/22

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Soource: TV By the Numbers.

CBS took Thanksgiving night, but based on the overnight fast affiliate results, one must question why CBS and ABC ran with new episodes. Both CSI and Grey’s Anatomy were well below their season averages although Grey’s gained viewers the second half hour while CSI lost them. As is usually the case, CSI won viewers while Grey’s Anatomy took the 18-49 demographic.

The approach used by NBC, Fox and The CW made more sense to me — they each aired movies (The Incredibles, Dodgeball and Raise Your Voice respectively). ABC went so far as to preview a new show — October Road. Especially with the ongoing WGA strike, it strikes me as a bit boneheaded for CBS and ABC to have run new episodes on Thanksgiving night.

TV's future linked to strike

Article by Rick Kushman McClatchy Newspapers.

So the writers' strike continues in Hollywood, late-night shows are in repeats, big-name producers are carrying picket signs and . . . yeah, I know, most people don't really care, at least not until their shows run out.

It all sounds selfish and vague. As 30 Rock creator and star Tina Fey says, it seems that some lucky people are fighting with some very lucky people.

In truth, the fight is important to everyone, and not in a justice-for-the-oppressed-writer way, though as a guy who writes for a living, I'm always ready to make that argument. This strike, and how things might play out, will eventually reach all of us because it's about the future, theirs and ours and anyone's who watches anything with moving pictures

You’ll see some interesting things, like CBS’ Kid Nation taking the 8:30p-9p half hour in viewers (although Pushing Daisies retained the #1 spot in the 18-49 demo). CBS’ Criminal Minds continues to shine while my favorite new show of the season, Dirty Sexy Money struggled to reach 7m viewers…and didn’t make it.

So what will happen if, despite the recent agreement to resume talks on Nov. 26, it goes on for 22 weeks like the last work stoppage in 1988?

According to Shari Ann Brill, a senior vice president at the ad-buying firm Carat, this strike is going to hurt a whole lot more. "Television as a medium will survive this, but the days of powerful rule by the broadcasters over audiences and advertisers could suffer a crippling blow from a prolonged disruption," she says.

CBS - WILL STRIKE GIVE CBS A BLACK EYE?

Article by staff.

Source: Contactmusic.

Sumner Redstone's decision to split Viacom into two separate companies, Viacom and CBS, in 2006 may have been taken without reckoning the consequences that a major strike would have on CBS. Analysts warned Thursday that CBS will likely be hit hardest by the writers' strike if it continues into January since, unlike the other major media companies, it has few other businesses that can offset lower advertising income for its television network and owned stations. Lehman Bros. analyst Anthony DiClemente, in an interview with Bloomberg News, noted that TV network ad sales comprise two-thirds of CBS's sales and profit, while ABC, NBC and Fox are each a part of larger media conglomerates that include other businesses, including theme parks, publishing, and cable networks. CBS also includes fewer nonscripted programs in its schedule than its rivals, although CBS chief Les Moonves indicated on Nov. 1 that the network has stockpiled a "full slate" of programs that could be rolled out in case of a strike, and CBS News executive producer Susan Zirinsky said earlier this week that the news magazine 48 Hours will likely be called up to act as a "utility player" for the network, filling in for strike-canceled shows. And CBS said Thursday that it will hold New York auditions on Sunday for new players for a possible mid-season run of Big Brother -- the first time the reality series has not aired during the summer.

Many fans have joined "Save our Show" efforts in the past. One technique that's gotten press and attention is fans mailing a particular item, related to the show, to the appropriate network -- bottles of Tabasco sauce for Roswell, or peanuts for Jericho. Here's what's being done by fans for the WGA strike: "Now is the time to save ALL our shows. MAIL PENCILS pencils to the AMPTP and to any studios whose shows you enjoy. Make sure the pencils are NOT sharpened (let's not impale any innocent mail carriers in this movement! One 42-cent stamp won't do it, because the letter must be hand canceled; it costs 58 cents (or, if you're lazy like me, just slap two stamps on each business-sized envelope). Feel free to enclose a brief note explaining which show(s) you most want back as soon as possible. Maybe we can help the studios see just how much support the WGA has. And maybe, just maybe, we can give them a graceful way out (not because they're buckling under the writers' demands, but because they care so much about their audience. Us. And isn't that supposed to be their job?"

The exact same statement was issued moments later by the Alliance Of Motion Picture And Television Producers, whose president Nick Counter earlier this week quietly dropped a demand that his side wouldn't go back into negotiations until the writers strike was stopped or at least suspended for a few days while talks proceeded. "In the television business the grim reality of the writers’ strike has set in, with the prospect of a long shutdown of scripted shows growing stronger by the day.
But in what seems to be growing consensus among executives at the television networks, the strike could contain a faint glimmer of good news for one group of shows: struggling, barely surviving prime-time series.
In January the series that had been held in reserve will get their shots on the air, usually in limited runs. These include shows like “Lost” and “Cashmere Mafia” on ABC, “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” on Fox and “Jericho” on CBS. And some of these shows could do better than they would have otherwise, because by the time they get on, they would not have to face original episodes of shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House.”

Monday’s Dancing with the Stars scored 21.8 million viewers and a 5.2/13 in the 18-49 demo. Heroes is still an 18-49 superstar, but Chuck isn’t so hot and Journeyman is on life support. Fox’s K-Ville isn’t doing so hot either. CBS’ comedy lineup does better although How I Met Your Mother and Big Bang Theory are not doing nealy as well as Two and a Half Men.

Jericho Monster: Soldiers' Angels

Article by Jericho Saved.

"Soldiers' Angels was started by a self-described ordinary mother of an ordinary young man turned hero, Sgt. Brandon Varn. Brandon was deployed in Iraq and has since honorably completed his mission and has returned back to his proud and loving family.

In the summer of 2003, he wrote home expressing his concern that some soldiers did not receive any mail or support from home. Being a caring and loving mother, she decided not to allow a situation like that to continue. She contacted a few friends and extended family to ask if they would write to a soldier or two. Within a few short months, Soldiers' Angels went from a mother writing a few extra letters to an Internet Community with thousands of angels worldwide.

Nielsen Meeting Reveals Shift Toward Digital Set-Tops, Mobile Video Platforms

Article by Joe Mandese.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR makes in the current rapidly changing digital media marketplace. That's what some clients of Nielsen Media Research are thinking following the company's annual national client meeting, at which the focus was less about traditional TV measurement methods, and more about the current and future potential of tracking video across a wide array of digital media platforms. The focus at this year's event shifted from intramural TV industry harangues, like the debate surrounding the new C3 ratings, to potential of unlocking the gold mind of TV digital set-top data streams.

Nielsen Online plans to introduce an all-in-one ratings system in 2008 that will measure viewership across television and the Internet. The ratings giant also intends to loop in measurement data across mobile viewing on cell phones and interaction with consumer-generated video.

Many advertising executives doubt Nielsen can pull off such an ambitious plan, and even if such sweeping data will be useful.

But Nielsen has already taken the first steps toward monitoring viewing habits across phones, TV and the computer.

Nielsen Reveals Shift In Time-Shifting: Less Playback Within Same Day

Article by Joe Mandese.

HOUSEHOLDS WITH DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDERS are watching fewer of the shows they record within the same day they are recorded, according to new data released this week by Nielsen Media Research. The shift isn't huge - a decline of less than two percentage points over the past year - but it could signal trouble for time sensitive advertisers who depend on having their TV commercial viewed close to the time they are aired. The finding, which is part of an update on local DVR time-shifting, shows that the percentage of DVR playback occurring within the same day shows were recorded fell to 62.1% in May 2007 vs. 63.5% a year earlier.

Meet the next hot digital media entrepreneur -- Sumner Redstone.

The Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp. chairman Thursday morning applied his old industry mantra to the new media space in a speech entitled: "In the digital domain, content still rules."

Among other things, Redstone touted his companies' strong online reach compared to such recent phenomenons as Facebook and their growing advertising revenue coming from cross-platform deals.

While Viacom has sued Google's YouTube, Redstone also called on media companies "to make it easy for consumers to obtain our content in a legal manner," and content producers "cannot let the lack of perfect anti-piracy tools keep us from forging ahead in providing the best, most innovative, creative content to the consumer over whatever medium they prefer."

New platforms creating new opportunities: Sumner falls solidly into the ‘content is king’ camp, as he stated several times. The key now is to embrace new forms of distribution: “The more platforms our content is on, the more numerous our revenue streams.” He then ticked off some of these new platforms, including Joost and social networking services like Last.fm and Flux: “Professionally produced content only increases in value as digital platforms multiply.”

Seven Steps to a TV Shutdown

Article by Deborah Netburn.

Source: Los Angeles Times.

Some of the striking writers have done more than march outside the studio lots with those big red-and-black signs. On Tuesday we read reports that some groups were trying to shut down television shoots. A scene from "Cane" was disrupted enough that the shoot had to be put off, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus and writers from her show "The New Adventures of Old Christine" reportedly tried to get a "Desperate Housewives" shoot shut down as well.

So how do you shut down a television shoot anyway? (Besides just making lots and lots of noise.) To find out, we e-mailed comedy writing partners Michael Colton and John Aboud, whom we watch each week on VH1's "Best Week Ever." The two, who also wrote the story for "The Comebacks," have been busy with the strike (Aboud is a strike captain) but still managed to find time to tell us how they would go about shutting down a show.

How November sweeps could play out.

Article by Toni Fitzgerald.

Source: Medialife emagazine.

Posted on the CBS Board by jameseve.

This November sweeps is like no other sweeps period in memory. There are few of the stunts that the networks famously used in years past to boost ratings of local affiliates for setting ad rates, but there're lots of other issues for media buyers to ponder, and not the least of which is the strike by the Writers Guild of America that began yesterday.

CBS has a solid footing on most nights, and it's particularly consistent on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

But CBS has created some holes with new programs. “Cane” and “Kid Nation” have helped erode viewers on key nights for CBS, which is missing the solid and surprising “Jericho,” especially among 18-49s.

The possible good news is that should this strike carry on for awhile, Jericho--and specifically the January slot that some fans have complained about--could end up greatly benefiting from it. Therefore, IGN points out, a prolonged strike means that Jericho will end up premiering at a time when few other original scripted programs are competing with it.

Networks plot midseason makeovers

Article by Josef Adalian.

Source: Variety.

Posted by Cingramaol, CBS message board.

After a fall launch that's left everyone a bit bruised, network execs hoped to see a bit of healing come January -- but a writers' strike now threatens to leave them even more bloodied.

Net (CBS) still has two more wildcards to play this season: edgy new drama "Swingtown" and the return of "Jericho." Both skeins fit into entertainment prexy Nina Tassler's mission of change, but skedding both will be a challenge.

"Jericho," which won't be back until January at the earliest, could return to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, though that means facing "American Idol" on some weeks. Sunday nights are an option, too.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Thursday, 11/1

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

And in the Grey’s vs. CSI contest — bad news for CBS! Not only did Grey’s Anatomy win the 18-49 demo by a healthy margin as is typical, it inched past CSI in total viewers. A one hour My Name is Earl bounced 30 Rock from the lineup last night. The Office picked up steam off of Earl and did well, as usual, in the 18-49 demo. Fox ran with 2 hours of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? and did OK with it. CBS went back into first place for the 10PM hour with Without a Trace. Both ER and Big Shots are strug-guh-ling. CW’s Supernatural is holding on to its viewers on this very competitive night.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Wednesday, 10/31

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

CBS won overall viewers and tied with ABC in the 18-49 demo. NBC came in third in the 18-49 demo followed by Fox and The CW. Due to all the trick or treating, there weren’t as many people watching TV and Fox and CW ran mostly reruns. We got a week off from the Bionic Woman due to a two hour Phenomenon, which judging from ratings and commentary is not very phenomenal. Criminal Minds and Private Practice duked it out at 9pm. While Dirty Sexy Money vs. CSI: NY isn’t as much of a contest, Dirty Sexy still looks like a renew.

Jericho: The First Season

Review by Jeremy Estes.

Source: Popmatters.

The time Nieves and I spent with the show was frustrating at times, rewarding at others. We fought with Jericho early on, unsure we wanted to continue, but we were determined. Always held in the thrall of the concept if not the characters, we watched as the show assimilated elements of Lost, one of our favorites, and action movies with varying results. When we finally finished, late on a Friday night, we breathed a sigh of relief; relief it was over and that our time wasn’t wasted. We may not be ready for seconds right now, but when there’s more, I think we’re going to want it.

CBS, NBC, and Content

Oh, I love my vampire!" CBS President of Entertainment Nina Tassler said recently, beginning a conversation about her network's new drama, "Moonlight."

Clearly, she must. No other TV show this fall has experienced as much turbulence as "Moonlight." But through all of the changes in the executive producing ranks, the cast and the show's framework, CBS hasn't budged in its support, scheduling it in between its reliable Friday-night fare, "Ghost Whisperer" and "Numb3rs."

A plug for Jericho"

"Jericho is a 2006 CBS TV series which takes place in a small town somewhere in northwest Kansas after a nuclear attack. Who was responsible for the nuclear attack? Was only Denver bombed, or were other cities? You’ll have to watch the series to find out."

CBS shrugs off Hollywood strike fears

Article by Paul R. La Monica.

Source: CNNMoney.com.

Moonves said that he hoped an agreement would be reached soon but did not seem overly concerned about what might happen to ratings or advertising revenue if the network runs out of new episodes of popular scripted programs to air.

“We are prepared with a full slate of first run programming now and at mid-season,” Moonves said. “The bottom line is this: in the event of a strike, we anticipate no material impact on the company for the remainder of the season.”
