Should the writers' strike continue well into spring, an already untenable situation at the broadcast nets will only worsen. Season to date, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox have seen their aggregate prime-time share among adult viewers 18-49 drop 8 percent, per Nielsen Media Research, and analysts believe a protracted standoff between writers and the studios will only cause faster erosion. "In one year, they've lost 10 percent of their commercial impressions," says Jack Wakshlag, chief research officer at Turner Broadcasting, adding that broadcast was particularly stung by a weak fall lineup.
As such, many observers have revised their earlier prognostications for 2008, a year that could see cable take upwards of $200 million from broadcast should the strike creep into the warmer months.

If any year will ever stand out as the most dramatic change of direction for network television, it will likely be 2007. And if there is any credit is to be given, it doesn’t belong to a single network or broadcast executive, but rather the collective efforts of fans from several television shows, with Jericho Rangers leading the charge in the form of 20 tons of nuts and constant coverage from personal blogs to The Wall Street Journal.

Your friends here at Remote Access wracked our brains for the moments that most shocked, amused, confused and infuriated us over the past year.
We laughed so hard we fell off the sofa:
• Jericho: The chat Mimi the IRS auditor (Alicia Coppola) had with a chicken she’s about to kill for dinner. Amy really didn’t like Mimi until that moment. But as Mimi explains to the chicken why she has to kill it, Amy couldn’t help but finally, reluctantly, fall in love with her:
You have to understand. It’s nothing against you personally. You’re wonderful. But let’s be logical. You’re the one of all the chickens who lays the fewest eggs. And I distinctly remember telling all of you that this was going to happen; I made that very clear. And if you knew me … it would be very funny because this is so not my thing … this is Stanley’s thing. Yeah. Don’t get me wrong here, I just cannot eat anymore sprouts and I am SO hungry. [She moves forward with the hatchet, but then sits back.] Here’s my concern: I’ve heard a lot of stories about what happens when people do this … and I know if I see half of you running around I am really going to freak out. So if you could just minimize that part, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks to the Jericho wiki for this transcription.
We sobbed uncontrollably:
• Jericho: If you didn’t cry when Johnston Green (Gerald McRaney) died, you have no soul.

When one of the most talked-about moments of your TV year involves a blackout, you know you've been part of one bumpy entertainment ride.
With the writers on strike and many of our favorite shows in limbo, the end of 2007 finds television fans in a funk. But that's no reason to go slumping into the new year. Whatever doesn't discourage you makes you more devoted, so in the interest of keeping the faith, here is a look at the television stunners and bummers that kept us buzzing this year.
STUNNER: “JERICHO” IS SAVED!
Thanks to an intensive lobbying campaign by the show's ferociously devoted viewers, CBS snatched “Jericho” from the jaws of cancellation and awarded the end-of-the-world drama a second season. Look for new episodes in February.

We may get to know 2007 television a whole lot better in 2008. With no settlement in sight, the new TV schedule won't be far removed from the perpetual repetition of "Groundhog Day" - and may continue far longer than Feb. 2.
We'll back out gracefully by focusing mostly on the biggest stories - not series - of the past 12 months:
#2 Nuts To That! - Through the years, frustrated TV fans have lamented the loss of favorite shows without being able to do much about it. That changed abruptly this spring when CBS yanked "Jericho" from the schedule without resolving key plot issues.

Pssst. Word-of-mouth marketing is spreading. Pass it on. How “loud” has this category become? W-O-M marketing is projected to hit $1.3 billion this year, up almost 33% from $981 million in 2006, per PQ Media, Stamford, Conn.
And the word is definitely spreading: Spending is expected to triple by 2011.
Two main factors are contributing to its growth: The explosion of communications on the Internet and the acceptance of W-O-M as a separate discipline beyond ads and public relations, according to Paul Rand, vp at the Word of Mouth Marketing Assn., Chicago.

Some series, mostly of the reality variety, could really benefit from the writers’ strike. One show in particular actually deserves the potential extra attention the few series running new episodes in the next few months will get; Jericho. The only real problems the series had was a slow start and just a bit of heavy melodrama here and there.

In the spirit of good harmony at year's end, I am going to tell the AMPTP corporations how it can save a great deal of money. Few writers would be willing to do this, I know, but maybe a kindness will be rewarded by their returning to the bargaining table.

Adding its voice to the accumulating punditry summarizing the year that is about to end, the American Film Institute declared on Wednesday that the current writers strike tops the seven "moments of significance" that have had an impact on the moving image in the past year.
Describing the strike as "part of a larger paradigm shift," the AFI said the labor battle is part of "the ongoing digital revolution (that) has upended conventional economic models, and uncertainty abounds when attempting to project how an audience will receive its storytelling in the years to come and how creators will be paid for their work."

Jericho was a show that started as a hit, and was expected to be on for some time to come.
However, CBS thought it would follow the lead of other networks and try something different -- why not give it a long winter hiatus, and make viewers clamor for it even more in the spring.
It was a gamble that nearly cost "Jericho" its life.

European Television Worries Over U.S. TV Shortfall.
Article by Mumtaj Begum.

TELEVISION has gone from being an idiot box to an ever-present family member that plays an interesting role in modern society. For one, there has been a notable change in how series are presented these days, a reflection of more informed viewers.
TV has become more complex, with its multi characters, defined story arcs and grey (anti-) heroes. Writers no longer need to hold viewers’ hands to hint at what the characters are implying. Talking down to the audience is absolutely out of the question.
There’s no denying fan power. Last year, post-apocalyptic drama series Jericho was pulled off the air after its first season. However, the network responsible for this had to rethink its decision after viewers made their demands known. These die-hard fans decided to do more than create “Save Jericho” websites and send e-mails to the network; they started a campaign that saw boxes containing nuts arriving at CBS’ corporate offices (the relevance of the nuts is revealed at the end of Jericho’s first season).

Christmas in Jericho is a very special time. From shopping for the perfect gift to visiting with neighbors Jericho is the place to be. This year many things have changed but this town will survive. Just like Margie and Edna.
The old girls have seen a lot of holidays pass in this town and not even bombs can deter them from sipping elderberry cordials in the parlor and speaking of Christmas.
Let's listen in.
Article by Kevin Young.

Perhaps the biggest global event of the past 12 months was the utter devastation wreaked on the United States in a series of nuclear explosions in 23 cities.
But when tens of millions of Americans were killed in the biggest attack of its kind, Jericho documented the incredible struggle of a handful of survivors.
The small town in Kansas which shared the programme's name was spared the effects of the attacks by a geographical quirk.
Cut off from the rest of the country following the attacks, confusion reigned as residents struggled to establish the extent of the devastation.
They were forced to turn to violence to defend themselves in the ensuing anarchy, as the skeleton government tried to enforce order and begin a programme of regeneration.
Such was the interest in their plight that viewers berated the CBS network for cancelling the show after only one series, and a further seven episodes will be screened next year as the people of Jericho - and the world - come to terms with their new, post-apocalyptic nation.

Don't ask us how, but we came upon this puzzling image - working backwards with the help of the Interwebs, we realized we were holding onto the latest clue in the Jericho Alternate Reality Game (Tom Tooman, to those in the know). Apparently, this game has been going on for months - it's only recently been conclusively tied to the show. Our collective mind boggles at the way ARG enthusiasts have slogged through Mayan glyphs and Morse-coded puzzles to gain any ground, let alone solve each piece days or even hours after its release.

Although the networks are doing their best to improvise during the writers’ strike, viewers did not seem especially interested in either of the two unscripted television series that made their debuts on Monday, according to Nielsen’s estimates of the night’s ratings.
“Duel,” a new game show on ABC that will appear every night this week, drew an unremarkable 7.7 million viewers in its first installment last night from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. And NBC’s two-hour premiere of “Clash of the Choirs” did not fare much better: from 8 to 10 p.m., the choral contest drew an average of 7.9 million viewers.

#1. Writers Guild of America/Alliance of Motion Picture And Television Producers: In a normal year, the "Jericho" story would've been No. 1. But there's no denying that the continuing Writers Guild of America strike is the key event of 2007. And the way it's going, it could end up being the key event of 2008 as well.
#2 Jericho: "Jericho" was a show that started as a hit, and was expected to be on for some time to come. It had some great acting talent in the form of Gerald McRaney and Skeet Ulrich, and a powerful story that was completely different from anything else on television.
However, CBS thought it would follow the lead of other networks and try something different -- why not give it a long winter hiatus, and make viewers clamor for it even more in the spring.
It was a gamble that nearly cost "Jericho" its life.

The Jericho part is about halfway into the interview .
MoviesOnline: Do you think this writer’s strike might be a benefit to Jericho because it will end up being the only new program?
JON TURTELTAUB: And CBS will probably put it on against "American Idol.” [Laughs] That’s probably how that’s going to go. Yeah, maybe. The problem is if it’s a hit, then what? There’s seven episodes. We have seven episodes waiting to be aired but if they’re great, there’s no eighth episode. So who knows? Who knows?
MoviesOnline: Have they given you an air date yet?
JON TURTELTAUB: No, but the rumblings are maybe February. They’re looking sometime in February. I think that’s when they’ve kind of exhausted what they have. I think it’s changed, you know, the notion of canceling shows went out the window because they have nothing to replace shows with so they might as well show what they’ve paid for and see where it takes them. The strike is bad for everybody.

My primary means for surviving the writers strike has been to load up my home theater PC DVR with recorded shows to watch through Spring and Summer 2008. Additionally, I’ll continue renting movies from Netflix and catch up on movies and TV shows that I missed out on before. While I’m at it, I’ll also spend some time outside.
Still, if I were a TV Network exec and trying to find several months of worthwhile programming, here’s what I’d do while waiting out writers strike. It’s actually a pretty easy solution and could revive some decent shows that deserved to be saved

More to come on this but some new info for now: CBS.com and CBSNews.com both have been hit hard by today’s layoffs. As I said below, CBSNews.com is vulnerable—despite what I am told were fierce efforts to the contrary by CBS News president Sean McManus, the site is losing roughly 30 percent of its already small staff—15-20 employees. From one company insider perturbed by the spin: ”No other old media company has scaled back their investment in online news. This is a first. That says everything you need to know about CBS. Inc’s commitment to news.” CBS Interactive head Quincy Smith’s name doesn’t appear in the official statement below but that insider and others believe he would rather not keep CBSNews.com at all, that it remains for PR purposes and because McManus and CBS News fought back.

Not only are they responsible for bringing the show back from cancellation — making sure the network has another series to show this winter during the ongoing writers' strike — but they also gave the network the perfect tool for marketing the show's return: nuts! In the past several years, TV fans have taken to the internet to launch campaigns in support of the shows they love. There was "Save Farscape," that lead to a resurrection in the form of a series of TV movies. There was the effort to save Firefly that ultimately lead Universal to believe that there was enough interest in the franchise to greenlight the Serenity movie. Most recently was the resurrection of CBS's apocalyptic drama Jericho. The campaign to save Jericho involved thousands of peanuts being sent to CBS in a symbolic gesture from the shows fans. In what seemed an almost impossible development, the network agreed to bring Jericho back for a shortened 7 episode season.
With the Writers Guild of America strike in it's sixth week, the fans have launched a new campaign. This time, they're supporting the writers themselves, and sending a message to the studio and network heads in the way of thousands of pencils. Half a million pencils, to be exact.

So, fast-forward three months or so, and CBS put "Jericho" on the air, and what they did was, they put a lot of video content from the show inside a Meebo room and put that on the CBS site so viewers can keep in touch with the show until the new season's ready and talk with each other."

One would think that when the media blackout surrounding the WGA strike negotiations ended, coverage of actual proposals and counter-proposals would replace the rumor-mongering that categorized the first few days of the new round of talks. But if anything, the speculation has become even more heated, and the mood swings more violent.

This is not so much horror news but I thought it would interest you. The final season of Jericho will be back February 12th to wrap up the story. The show is a post-apocalyptic series about a world turned upside down by a nuclear attack on the United States. Although some of the story writing was a bit flakey overall I have to say its the best apocalyptic story yet to be done on TV. Cancelling this show was a big mistake and really pisses me off. Every show i get into seems to get cancelled.

When CBS announced that Jericho would return Tuesdays at 10pm beginning February 12, fans became worried. That particular time slot has been a kiss of death for the network ever since Judging Amy folded years ago, with Cane being the most recent victim of faltering ratings. Is it possible for CBS, along with the rabid fans, to organize enough support to keep the show alive beyond the already completed seven episodes?

The people around Les Moonves are making a point of telling me he's a moderate, and saying he's not a hardliner. That may cause his showrunners to like him more when the strike is over. But why can't he use his charismatic influence to lead the AMPTP to closing a deal with the writers sooner rather than later?

Nielsen is getting into the content-protection game.
The media-measurement giant teamed up with Beaverton, Ore.-based Digimarc to create a new service called Nielsen Digital Media Manager that will use digital-watermarking and fingerprinting technology to help media companies manage and protect their copyrighted content as it is distributed across the Internet. The product is due to be available in mid-2008.
The solution -- which will leverage digital-watermarking technology that Nielsen already uses for its TV-ratings service -- will allow programmers to identify what content is being shared, viewed, mashed up or accessed on individual Web sites and create rules that will allow or disallow content to be uploaded.

The talks will resume on Thursday. But I'm told by a mogul that the reason the second half of the AMPTP proposal -- which presumably contains an offer about electronic sell-through (ESTs) -- has not yet seen the light of day is because "no one is prepared to put anything new on the table until there's movement on other issues." Oh, c'mon!

With the strike squeezing off the pilot script pipeline, CBS is turning to feature film scripts in a bid to find potential material for new series.
Eye entertainment prexy Nina Tassler has been personally calling a number of film producers and asking them to dust off any unproduced scripts that could be turned into TV series, according to two people familiar with the situation. These projects are already fully written but have either been put into turnaround or simply never got off the ground.

The sweet music of new episodes is about to stop as the TV writers’ strike rolls on, and that means TV networks are scrambling to fill their schedules as they try to avoid hurling reruns at viewers’ eyes.
And that’s good news for “Jericho” and “Law & Order” fans.
“Jericho,” the little CBS drama that could, escaped from the jaws of TV death last season after being canceled and was revived after a huge outpouring of support from fans. It returns with its shortened second season at 10 p.m. (Eastern/Pacific) on Feb. 12. Although it’s only seven episodes, “Jericho” will likely be the first major network show to complete its full 2007-08 season because all the others have been hijacked by the strike. All seven “Jericho” episodes are filmed, edited and ready for air, so it will air without interruption.

Those fanatical, Jericho Television Show fans (yes I'm one of them too) now have a date for their calendars to get excited about. CBS announced their premier date for Jericho: Season 2 for Tuesday, Feb. 12 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT). You never know that the networks will do to get though a crisis. Luckily for some fans, these plans include bringing back show left for dead, but can guarantee a bigger and better audience that either stale reruns or a new series can bring.
Jericho is one of the best underdog TV stories. The show had been pretty much cancelled, but was saved by a huge campaign waged by its rabid fan base. CBS was bombarded by cans of nuts until they could no longer be ignored, and the show was saved. Networks executives have been slammed over their apparent doublespeak when it comes to digital media. How can digital represent such a boon, but there still not be any extra money to pay the striking writers? A month into the strike, it looks like they may be getting better at threading the needle—or at least Les Moonves has. During his keynote interview at the UBS Global Media Conference, Moonves spelled it out very slowly for the audience: “The future looks very bright… that day is not here.” So while the pie will be big, “right now, we don’t know what that pie is.”

There is not unanimity within the mogul camp on how to proceed with these resumed AMPTP-WGA talks. For one thing, not all their agendas are the same: there are the mostly movie studios, the mostly TV networks, and the studios that own networks, and the networks that own studios. But all are led by a handful of CEOs who are the power behind the AMPTP throne. In the old days of guild talks, the AMPTP was made up of hundreds of real producers. That's the reason why this negotiation is so dramatically different than the strike of 1988. Because honest-to-god independent producers went by the wayside when financial syndication rules were eased. Then came Big Media consolidation, so now there's no Aaron Spelling or Carsey Werner in the mix at the AMPTP telling the big boys to play nice. Now the bullies are in charge of the playground.

A friend of mine wondered if we were going to see a return to "the days of 'Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom'?" That certainly looks to be one of the models. Dear Rangers,
We have some exciting news and wanted you to hear it first. Later today we will announce Jericho’s return to CBS’s primetime schedule. Seven new episodes will be broadcast on Tuesdays at 10:00 PM, ET/PT beginning Feb. 12.
We hope you will rally around the new episodes of Jericho with the same passion and volume you displayed this summer to bring the show back. The writers and producers have crafted an exciting second season that picks up immediately following the battle with New Bern, as the town begins the rebuilding process, and along the way discovers why their small community is so important to the newly formed government, and what the true intentions of this new government might be.
In success, there is the potential for more Jericho, but we will need your help to recruit new viewers. For your friends or family who have never seen the show, the entire first season can be seen on CBS.com, or on the recently released Season One DVD set.
On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for your continued support of Jericho.

Jericho had one of the most impassioned displays of fan support in recent memory, as supporters of the show sent in over 20 tons of peanuts to CBS to get the series renewed for a second season. Now, all of that hard work has finally paid off as CBS has officially announced the return date for the post-apocalyptic drama.
Jericho will return to the schedule on Tuesday, February 12, at 10pm. At this point the series has only been picked up for seven additional episodes, and it's unknown whether CBS will decide to order any beyond that. However, the network has said that they will happily greenlight more episodes if the ratings pick up for the series.

"The networks have been reluctant to acknowledge the size of their streaming business, partly because online video advertising has become a sticking point in the negotiations with Hollywood writers." So says the Financial Times, which then interviews media buyers to try to arrive at a dollar figure. This is an important and impartial article which both sides of the writers strike need to consider before going into Tuesday's talks. It finds after interviewing media buyers that "the four U.S. television networks in a pay dispute with Hollywood television writers over online video advertising are in line to generate $120M of revenues in 2007 from free web streaming of their content." It says advertisers are flocking to web streaming, and the total online video ad market will be worth close to $1.3 billion this year after doubling in size in 2006, according to the digital media research company Accustream.

Most people have heard how fans banded together and convinced CBS to reverse its decision to cancel Jericho, a post nuclear terrorist attack survival drama, with 20 tons of nuts (among other things). Many know that Jericho is now set to be highlighted in 2008 as one of the few shows with any episodes for the new season.
Much fewer know that fans have since raised funds to support Greensburg, Kansas, after it was hit by devastating tornados and later created an effort to support the troops. They’ve also been increasingly active in supporting the writers strike. (It makes one wonder if CBS appreciates the fans it has for a show the network under supports.)

Life in television land was simpler in 1958. Marshal Matt Dillon was in charge of dusty Dodge City and roughly 1,200 TV homes across the country had the power to make Gunsmoke America's most popular TV program.
Viewers wrote down what they watched in A.C. Nielsen diaries, usually reporting four times a year to determine the ranking of network shows.
Gunsmoke long ago went to an electronic boot hill.
Diaries are still around, but they are being replaced by sophisticated electronic measurement devices as Nielsen delivers detailed, up-to-the minute information to broadcast and cable networks, local stations and (as of this fall) advertisers.
