In the old days when the conductor of the train was ready to leave a station the whistle blew and he shouted “All Aboard!”.Yesterdays presentation at the SAP Anniversary session of The Cluetrain ignited the blogosphere with conversational rivers that will likely swell for weeks. The Cast, Crew and Producers gathered together last night to celebrate the premiere of “your” show… it was an amazing night for all of us. There were cheers and screaming applause when Bill reached for those peanuts in the medical center. That was just a small shout-out to you guys… all seven episodes are the real tribute to what each and every one of you has done. You continue to amaze us.

Thank you for the responses to the episode… we were so excited when we saw the message boards light up last night. We wanted to give you something great and your feedback speaks volumes.

CBS is so committed to this show. They love these episodes and are thrilled about the critical acclaim the show is receiving. The reviews couldn’t be better and the network is going to continue to use the reviews to promote us. Jericho returns from the dead tomorrow, and it nearly cost Brad Beyer his life. He was racing along Los Angeles’ lethal I-405 freeway when he got the message that CBS, three weeks after canceling the series, had changed its mind and was bringing Jericho back for another season.

“I was in my car, checking the voice mail on my cell phone, and there was a message from co-star Skeet Ulrich that CBS was going to keep us after all,” Beyer remembers. “I almost ran off the expressway.”

CBS netted the most viewers of the evening on the strength of the season premiere of Survivor: Micronesia.  Even with the repeats of CSI, and Without a Trace that followed, CBS still had the most viewers.  While not “great” numbers for Survivor, good enough to win the 8pm hour by a fairly wide margin in both viewers and the 18-49 demo.

Jericho's second season serves as a tribute to the rugged individualism and other values--including a genius for publicity--that sprout up like golden corn across our land. The show, a postapocalyptic fantasy about a Kansas town toughing it out after the country is wrecked by nuclear bombs, was canceled last spring due to weak ratings. Outraged fans protested by shipping CBS millions of peanuts. (Te show had quoted Gen. Anthony McAuliffe's famous non-surrender to the Germans: "Nuts!") Now the fans have Jericho back for seven episodes. To be honest, I was never going to mourn this new-millennial western, and season 2's first episodes don't grab me, either, with their dusty evocation of modern frontier grit. Meanwhile, sinister forces a re reshaping the former U.S.A.into regional powers. A new President visits, and he's just another telegenic politico, a damply good-looking zero in a suit. What good's an apocalypse? But it does a heart good to see viewer's clout: Jericho deserves a place in TV history.

After beating down CBS's door Jericho is back! See an inside look into Season 2

Having survived not only the fallout from a nearby nuclear attack but also the cancellation of the TV show that bears their town name, the hardy citizens of Jericho, Kan., have now been resurrected in one of the few scripted series airing new episodes. Will this cause millions of new viewers to finally pay a visit to Jericho to satisfy their dramatic cravings? Not if the show has any say in it.

Indeed, watching the first batch of season 2 episodes (which begins Feb. 12), I was struck anew by how it's prickly, anarchic presence on CBS make little mass-audience sense. Did the home of such patriotic fare as The Unit and NCIS realize that the minds behind Jericho have been steadily building the TV-drama version of a conspiracy nut's bomb shelter, where a cabal of viewers can huddle together each week and have their worst fears about the government confirmed?

Jericho is centered on Skeet Ulrich's Jake Green, a young, independent fella (you can tell because he has stubble and wears a baggy fatigue jacket) who fights to keep his family and community free. This weeks picks up with the ongoing source of Jericho's paranoia: the notion that the nuclear attacks were provoked by two-thirds of our real-life president's axis of evil, North Korea and Iran. Jake and some of his friends suspect that's a lie, a power play by breakaway militant government led by a demagogic new president (George Newbern).

The producers drench the action with buckets of cynicism, despair, and helplessness--a;; qualities any critic worth his salt usually gets off on, but here it simply feels limp. Jericho tries to lighten the heavy material with Jake's smoochy relationship with Ashley Scott's Emily, and the quirky romantic due of Jake's best friend, Stanley (Brad Beyer), and high-strung accountant Mimi (Alicia Coppola). Scenes with these duos are wooden--Ulrich has never been a warm lover-boy type--and don't mix with what the show really wants to grapple with: the way rugged individualists must form communities to fend off organized threats. This is a drama that just can't commit: Jericho wants to disguise its survivalist agenda by having its hero say, "I'm not a conspiracy net", yet conspiracy drives its overarching plot.

But two characters are promising. The imperious baldie Daniel Benzali (Murder One) returns as an all-seeing, align power bent on tracking down "terrorists" (i.e., anyone who disagrees with him). And in the second episode, we are reintroduced to a familiar foe sure to crank up the town tension. I'll never be a Jericho nut, but I'm all for performers like these who'll inject some cracked intensity into this grim fantasy. B-

 Editor: I gues this reviewer has never heard of The X-Files; at least he gave Jericho a decent grade.

After CBS canceled "Jericho" last May, fans bombarded the network with nuts -- a reference to dialogue from the show's season finale -- and three weeks later, CBS revived the post-apocalyptic drama. It was a near-miraculous turnabout, fueled by equal parts fan fervency and the network's desire to experiment in an uncertain, new media-driven TV culture where ratings are no longer the sole factor in determining a show's fate.

Was this resurrection worth the effort?

In a word, yes.

Everything you need to know about your favorite postapocalytic drama.

If I haven't watched the show before, what do I need to know?

Jericho is a small Kansas town spared in a terrorist nuclear attack that wiped out 23 cities across the country. Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich), a local bad seed who did some nefarious work for a military contractor in Iraq, returns home just as the attacks occur. He emerges as a leader of the town, which is targeted for its resources by neighboring burg New Bern. Jericho is also where covert agent Robert Hawkins (Lennie James) has taken refuge with a nuke that was to be used in the attacks (which he tried and failed to prevent). Someone wants it back.

Season 2 is pretty short. Is that going to charge the way the story is told?

Yes. With only seven episodes this time around, the series is focused almost entirely on how the town deals with the newly formed federal government operating out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. "The restrictions we inherited with Season 2--fewer writers, less money and less time--were challenges," executive producer Carol Barbee says. "But they gave us license to day, 'We're going to do the show that we want to do.' "

Does the new flag raised at the end of Season 1 offer any clues about what's coming up?

It represents the Cheyenne government, also known as the Allied States of America. President Tomarchio (George Newbern) is its shady leader. "The legitimate heir to the democratic government is in Columbus, Ohio, but they don't have the number of military bases on that side of the fence that the Cheyenne government does," Barbee says. Esai Morales plays Army Major Beck, who is brought in from Cheyenne to restore order in Jericho after its skirmish with new Bern. But over time, Barbee says, "He'll ask himself, 'When do I stop being a military man and start just being a man and doing what I think is right?' "

Have we seen the last of Ravenwood, the mercenary army that rolled into town during Season 1?

You'll have to watch, but we can tell you that Ravenwood's parent company, Jennings & Rall, will play a very big role. "Think Halliburton," is how Barbee describes the government contractor that sets up shop in Jericho. The producers have even created a realistic corporate Web site (jenningsandrall.com), detailing the company's holdings, "I thought for a moment that it was a real company," James says. "i wondered if they were going to be concerned about how they were portrayed in the show."

Is there any time for romance?

Jake has hooked up with hometown sweetheart Emily (Ashley Scott), and his brother Eric (Kenneth Mitchell) is still with barkeeper Mary(Clare Carey). But the only relationship that really develops in the second season story is between Mimi (Alicia Coppola), the high-strung IRS auditor from Washington, D.C., and laid-back Jericho farmer Stanley (Brad Beyer).

What do those two see in each other anyway?

"It started out as being circumstantial as Mimi had nowhere to go," Coppola says. "All of a sudden, Mimi's with a man who doesn't give a crap about any of the things that she used to care about. He's got character. He's got strength, He's probably everything she always wanted, but never knew she did."

Several characters were killed off last season. Any casualties this time around?

Only one, but it's big and it kicks the main story into high gear. Barbee says, "We really felt that something had to happen that was so heinous, the town would rise up against the Cheyenne government." Get ready to duck and cover.

With Jericho, it's always about survival, and the show's own tale of resurrection is at least as dramatic as what happens on screen. (See page 40.)

After fans rallied to save its form cancellation last year, CBS relented. The result: a seven-episode mini-season in which Jericho evolves from a postapocalyptic allegory into a deadly earnest conspiracy thriller doubling as a Revolutionary War parable.

"At what point is this a country we don't even recognize?" says one of the good citizens of Jericho, Kansas. For good reason. With Washington, D.C, and 22 other cities wiped out in coordinated nuclear bomb strikes and the federal government in tatters, Jericho imagines a divided nation with rival capitals in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Columbus, Ohio. Propping up the Cheyenne government: a sinister corporation with private "contractors" who control access to money and necessary supplies. They appear to be about as trustworthy as the rescuers on Lost.

An insurgency of ordinary townsfolk emerges, led by newly christened sheriff Jake (Skeet Ulrich in a state of perpetual glower). "Every revolution that's ever been fought . . . started in rooms like this," another ringleader says, invoking the Stamp Act and the Boston Tea Party.

The action is fast-paced, the plotting dense, if often simplistic, and the tension generally sustained, as long as you don't overthink the improbabilities of the cover-up over who's responsible for the bomb attacks. Condensing a season into seven episodes thankfully leaves little room for padding--or, sadly, for anything beyond the most shallow character development.

Jericho is more a victory for fans than a triumph of the imagination.

Primetime TV viewing on the Web has gained considerably in the past year, according to a Solutions Research Group survey released Monday.

The survey said 80 million Americans watched a TV show online last year. This number accounts for 43% of the online population, up from 25% who said they watched a TV show on the Web last year.

People, I have seen the first three episodes of Season 2 of “Jericho,” and let me say this as someone who spent Season 1 as both a fan and a detractor of the show: virtually every major problem I had with the show during its first season has been rectified.

I know, that’s the kind of claim that leaves you thinking that I’m hip-deep in hyperbole, but I’m telling you, I am in no way kidding you.

Lawmakers began taking a more active role in the writers strike this week as a group of California Democrats led by the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee accused a pair network chiefs of dragging their feet.

In a letter to Walt Disney Co. president and CEO Robert Iger and Fox president and COO Peter Chernin, the lawmakers urged them to pick up the pace of the negotiations, sources who had seen the letter said.

With the season four premiere of Lost, ABC easily won the last night of January.  While Lost did not have it’s biggest ratings ever, or perform as well as say Desperate Houswives, an hour worth of recap and the premiere both had solid performance in viewers and in the 18-49 demographic and both hours easily won their timeslots.  And while it was still January, technically last night was the first night of February sweeps, so at least briefly — say until Sunday when the Super Bowl airs on FOX, ABC is off to a good start.
