In my scant few pieces of down-time this week, I’ve worked to put together a post about the disappointment felt not only about Jericho’s cancellation, but also by the way in which the bad news was conveyed to us (or not). During the course of this week – has it been a week already? Boy, time flies when you’re having fun (or not!) – my point-of-view and my words have changed a thousand of times already.

We hate to even mention it, given how things turned out the last time, but fans of "Jericho," which last week was canceled for the second year in a row, are not giving up.

Though they do seem, at least, to have given up on CBS, focusing instead on a possible cable pickup. If you, too, are missing "Jericho" and want to talk with like-minded people, one resistance group meets at www.jerichonet2.com/board. *

'JERICHO' ADDRESSES SECOND AMENDMENT IN SERIES FINALE

The importance of the Second Amendment was hailed last week from an unlikely source- Hollywood. JERICHO FANS WORK TO BE PART OF HISTORY….AGAIN!

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

I know I said I would never write about Jericho again, but this isn’t my writing so it doesn’t count. This comes to us from Amber who is in support of JerichoNet2.com’s efforts to revive the show. But as long as I’m here… I recently played around with the new service at FriendFeed.com. FreindFeed is sort of an aggregator for all the social networking services avaialable.

One interesting thing resulted. Although I have only ”friended” a few people and only eight people have friended me, two out of the eight watched Jericho. Including me, that makes three out of nine. Since it’s completely random — the people who friended me don’t live in my neighborhood, and the two people who claim Jericho, I’ve never met either of them face-to-face, although one of them I’ve “known” for years. I did pause to think, “what are the odds that three out of nine people (including me) watched Jericho, and Niesen isn’t at least a little screwed up?” I’m still pondering. Here’s the press release:

Editor: Mr. Seidman may have finally seen what the fans have known for a long time - there are a lot more Jericho fans than the Nielsen's show.

A blast from the past, a suture into the future

Posted by Aaron Barnhart.

Source: TV Barn, KansasCity.com.

The combined audience for “The Tudors” on Showtime and “Battlestar Galactica” on SciFi wouldn't even equal that of “Jericho,” which aired its last episode on CBS last week. CBS executives said the show's fan base wasn't large enough, but I suspect the fact that “Jericho” never achieved the coolness quotient of other thrillers like “24” or “Lost” had something to do with it.

Jericho

Posted by staff.

Source: THE ZOCALO TODAY - March 30, 2008.

I waited a while, just in case there were folks who wanted to see the
last show on-line, rather than watching the finale on Tuesday night. I
enjoyed every moment of this show and the last episode had you on the
edge of your seat the entire time. We as fans got closure -- but the
door is still open for more JERICHO in the future. What happens next?
What happens to JERICHO during the great Civil War that is sure to
come between the Cheyenne and Texas Governments? There is much more
story to tell and I hope that we get to see it.

The creators of JERICHO are shopping the series around so I hope they
find a home for it. While I wasn't always there to watch on whatever
night it was aired, I was one of the 700,000 watching it on the
www.CBS.com website. Too bad there aren't Nielsen ratings for that.

Jericho Fans Try To Make History

Posted by Citizenman.

Fans of the CBS show Jericho are trying to make history by getting their show back again. Nielsen, Sci-Fi and CBS seem to be their targets this time around. Although they are mad at CBS this time they are also mad at Nielsen Ratings, who they claim to have been misleading the public. On many Jericho related sites fans claim to be mailing nuts to Nielsen and also sending postcards and angry letters to this company.

The "Jericho" series finale — or at least the CBS finale, since apparently there is still some scrambling to keep the show going — offered a pretty open-ended wrap. Since there's still a war to be fought, a nation still divided, a Jericho that's a mess, hostile forces down the road in New Bern … Well, you get the idea. Rest in peace, 'Jericho'

Article by Elizabeth Donald.

It is with sadness -- but no real surprise -- that I report the death of "Jericho."

It was the little series that could(n't), and we all wanted it to succeed the way we root for a true David facing Goliath with nothing but a slingshot full of peanuts. "Jericho" was a smart, well-designed series about a Kansas town surviving after a worldwide nuclear disaster. It hit us all from the beginning, because it attempted to show us a reality we haven't really seen since "The Day After."

The star of "Jericho," Skeet Ulrich has a long and varied acting career, but is currently enjoying a previously eluded level of fame and popularity. On Tuesday night, CBS aired the final episode of Jericho. In case you weren’t watching (and judging by Jericho’s ratings, you weren’t), it was a drama about the residents of a small town in northwestern Kansas in the wake of a nuclear terrorist attack on 23 American cities. As you might guess from the premise, there weren’t a whole lot of laughs over the course of the show's thirty episodes. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself wanting more when the end credits rolled on the series finale.

Honestly, I’m not absolutely sure what to add to my thoughts from last night.

Given the fact that Jericho producers crammed an entire season’s worth of storyline into seven episodes, I thought they did a masterful job of wrapping it all up neatly enough that we wouldn’t have aneurysms if it did end up being the last episode ever.

It, however, also made me mourn the season that wasn’t. And I don’t mean Season 3. I mean a full Season 2.

My other favourite show was afforded a stay of execution last year when a grassroots online campaign saved Jericho from SciFi channel repeats for a good six months. Nuts Online, which has nothing to do with a fictional programme about a small town in Kansas and its strangely good-looking inhabitants, found itself in the middle of a campaign to rescue the show from CBS's chopping board. Along with other similar campaigns, they ended up successfully extending the show's lifespan through a second season.

The Jericho adventure is now over with the series finale last night. I was sad to see it go to the point of clockwatching during the broadcast, counting down the minutes left in the program/series. The tone of Jericho was different the second time around as the plot advanced at warp speed but at least the main storylines were resolved as best as they could be for an abbreviated season. Much of the drama that made the show the first time around, which I in fact made fun of, was striped from the second season. Be careful what you wish for because I actually, *gulp* …missed it.

Jericho got canceled again, which is precisely what I said would happen, for the reasons I've already gone over before. This second limited-run order got fewer viewers than the show had when it was canceled the first time, which were lower than where they were before CBS put it on a horrible three-month hiatus. Had that not happened, it might never have come to this, and it's a terrible shame. Jericho was a fantastic show to begin with, and it still held up with a reduced budget and only seven episodes to work with.

Good television shows die every day. Well, maybe not every single day, but certainly every season. One of the good shows that died last year was the post-apocalyptic CBS drama Jericho. However, unlike most shows that get canceled and then disappear forever to DVD, Jericho was resurrected for seven episodes due to the tenacity of determined fans. What2Watch: The Battle of Jericho Is Lost

Posted by staff.

Source: What2Watch, Film.com.

Jericho is dead, and this time all the nuts in the world aren't going to bring it back. CBS had hoped the fan frenzy that inspired them to revive the show for a mini-season might be a sign that Jericho was a true late bloomer along the lines of Family Guy, but ratings were actually lower this winter than they were last year at this time. It didn't help that it was preceded by Big Brother, which would be an inappropriate lead-in even in a season where it had better ratings.

The finale doesn't entirely slam the door on the series, but is notably different from the cliffhanger version, sources said. CBS = Walmart

CBS you are becoming like Walmart! Every time you find something you like and begin to use (watch) it they discontinue it. It starts by shuffling it around to a different location making it hard to find, then the sales reports indicated the demand for it has gone down ( because no one can find it) so it is discontinued. With this and the writer‘s strike thank goodness I had a DVR this season. If you could of called it a season. Maybe you should take notice as Walmart's ratings are going down and learn a lesson from them. With so much junk on so many channels it amazes me at the decision CBS has made AGAIN to cancel this show. and yet I see CBS bringing back "Welcome Back Kotter" Give me a break. I've watched CBS primarily for 30 years but I'm done It is astonishing at the ever increasing number of TV channels available and yet so little to watch. I certainly hope some network out there picks up and continues the show. Just as my decision to refuse to shop and in turn support Walmart, the time has come to ban CBS. Granted, it's tough at first to break the convenience habit but to lay down and accept being dictated to is shameful. I am a stronger person than that and channel lock helps too. :) I will miss the shows I watch on CBS but in time I am confident I will find other shows on different networks to satisfy my viewing needs. With spring time approaching this to will help also. It’s not that my feelings or opinion will make much difference to the almighty CBS but they better watch out if there is enough people out there that feel like I do and choose to do something about it!

Although die-hard fans tried to save Jericho from the post-apocalyptic network wasteland in 2007, they still couldn't stop the series from becoming nothing more than another memory in television history in 2008. Despite being on the network chopping block for most of its run, Jericho couldn't muster the Nielsen numbers CBS was looking for to make it a long term hit and won't be coming back as CBS confirmed on Friday.

Seven more episodes and 20 tons of peanuts later, CBS once again has nuked its low-rated apocalyptic survivalist series, "Jericho," and, once again, we've been reminded the threshold for success in broadcast TV is very much higher than the threshold for success in other pursuits -- including online nut sales.

The first time it got canceled due to low TV ratings, the passionate fans led a protest online and forced CBS to bring it back. It has been a popular show on CBS.com and iTunes.

Jericho cancelled again

(CBS) "Jericho" has been canceled, and no amount of peanuts will bring it back.

"The March 25th episode of Jericho will be the series finale," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a statement. "Without question, there are passionate viewers watching this program; we simply wish there were more."

The show was canceled after its first season, but was resurrected when fans joined together and sent tens of thousands of pounds of peanuts to get the network to change its mind.

CBS ordered a second season of seven episodes which premiered on Feb. 12, 2008. Ratings never equaled the first season's numbers, and have taken a tumble since the premiere.

"We have no regrets bringing the show back for a second try," the network said. "We listened to our viewers, gave the series an opportunity to grow, and the producers put a great story on the screen. We're proud of everyone's efforts."

Producers hedged their bets by shooting two alternate endings to the final show, which airs Tuesday.

One is a cliffhanger that could have led to a third season and the other ending is said to bring "closure" to fans.

But, sources tell the Hollywood Reporter, there's enough wiggle room in the final episode to make room for new life of the series on cable.

Jericho: Major Beck has shown signs of second thoughts recently, but after last night, I’m not sure it’s even possible for him to realize he’s on the wrong team and make amends. His idiocy is really starting to irk you, isn’t it? Say Jericho does get picked up for another season—how would you like to see things play out next week? Maybe have the bomb turn out to be a dud and detonate in Beck’s face, managing to kill only him?

The Diminishing Role of Women on 'Jericho'

Article by John Kubicek.

Source: Buddy TV.

Jericho has never been a feminist show. Sure, Emily (Ashley Scott) had a few big action moments in the first season, but overall, this is a show about men taking back their town and fighting against tyrannical oppression. Jericho is about the rebirth of the Founding Fathers, and in keeping with that tradition, women are relegated to the status of Martha Washington and Betsy Ross.

I believe I called that. I know, who didn’t see it coming? A million innocent people. Will the bomb go off in Cheyenne? Will it instead detonate somewhere where there aren’t a million innocent people. Or will it not go off at all. Since all are possibilities in the 24 playbook that is now being drawn from, it’s anyone’s guess. With the possibility of next week’s episode being either merely a season finale or a series finale, even nuking Jericho is in the mix.

Bombs Away!

Article by David Hochman.

Source: TV Guide, March 24-30, 2008 issue.

The end is near for Jericho Or is it? Although fans rallied to save the end-of-the-world drama from the clutches of cancellation last season, the CBS series may one again require a postapocalyptic miracle to survive. "We've shot two separate endings and one's more final than the other," says Skeet Ulrich, who plays sheriff Jake Green. CBS isn't saying which ending they'll go for tonight, but either one should make for riveting viewing. Says Ulrich, "We want to give the fans a finale that pays them back in a big way." All season, the townspeople of Jericho have been adjusting to leadership out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Through it all, they put their faith in Jake to maintain a sense of calm--even as he was occasionally getting his butt kicked. "My least favorite part of this role was torturing Skeet," says Esai Morales, who play Colonel Beck, the honcho charged with turning Jericho around. "Skeet's such a good guy, and here I am having to go Guantanamo on his ass!" The finale will put Jake through the ringer yet again, as he teams up with Hawkins (Lennie James) to retrieve the bomb the Cheyenne government took from Texas. "The big question, " says coexecutive producer Dan Shotz, "will be whether Jake and Hawkins can make it out of Cheyenne with the bomb and with their lives."

Article by James Hibberd.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter.

The dramatic Season 1 finale of CBS' "Jericho" concluded with two high-stakes cliffhangers: Will a Kansas town of nuclear war survivors successfully fight off a lawless invading militia? And will a network that dares to renew "Jericho" despite its below-the-line ratings be rewarded for having faith in the show?

Nearly a year later, the citizens of "Jericho" are alive and well. But CBS' roll of the dice hasn't quite paid off.

Finally, the big boy — “Jericho.” CBS has yet to decide this show’s fate. The LIVE viewing numbers haven’t been great, but they also haven’t been that bad. Anytime a network can garner 6 to 8 million consistant viewers to sit through a one hour show week after week with all those dreaded commercials is a good thing. More importantly, CBS is looking at the DVR numbers for the show and are ecstatic. Will this be enough to keep the show on CBS? We should know within a week or two.

Article by James Hibberd.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter.

"Jericho." CBS must make this decision quickly since only three episodes remain in Season 2 and the network has to choose Ending A or Ending B. Two conclusions to the season have been shot. One puts a narrative lid on the series (lest protesting fans pelt CBS executives with thousands of pounds of nuts again), the other more of a cliffhanger. CBS notes that the show gains from DVR viewership and online viewing, but after its performance the past two weeks, most doubt the citizens of "Jericho" will live to fight another season.

Jericho’s loyal fans may have saved the show — about a post-apocalyptic town in Kansas — from cancellation, but they couldn’t save series regular Shoshannah Stern’s character from the evil and powerful Jennings & Rall, a corporation looking to install a franchise government in what’s left of the Western U.S.

Going Back to Jericho with Alicia Coppola

Interview by Troy Rogers.

Source: The Deadbolt.

For years, Alicia Coppola has had one of those recognizable faces that you just know you’ve seen somewhere, even if you can’t quite put your finger on it. It’s probably because she’s guest-starred on literally dozens of television shows from Star Trek: Voyager to Bones and so many in between. Coppola got her big break in 2006 when she was cast as the ‘outsider’, Mimi Clark, on Jericho. The series never turned into a huge hit and it looked like Alicia might have to try again, but, as we all know by now, Jericho fans weren’t going to let their favorite series end. Now, Jericho is back from the dead and, as you might have guessed, struggling in the ratings again. Coppola sat down with us recently to talk about her character, what’s going to happen next on Jericho, and the loyalty of the show’s fan base

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Monday, 3/10

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

What a difference a week makes for ABC. The Bachelor: Where are They Now? was no 20/20: The Royal Family, and ABC plummeted from first place last Monday to fourth place this Monday. The only good news for the Mouse network is that it tied for 3rd with FOX in the 18-49 demo even though it averaged two million fewer total viewers. ABC aired the final two episodes of October Road between 9p-11p, and given the performance (under 5 million and under a 2.0 in the demo) those will almost certainly be the final two episodes.

ABC won the night and Oprah won her timeslot, but the above headline probably works with or without the comma. Oprah’s Big Give was off more than 20% from its debut last week and it’s not lost on me that a repeat of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition pulled in more viewers and had just about the same 18-49 rating. Oprah had a better household rating, but that suggests to me that Extreme Makeover is another show that people watch together as families.

"Who would have bet that Jericho would get me more keyed up than Heroes? And frankly, I think the writing staff of Heroes could learn a thing or two from Jericho. The shortened season means 2/3 of the planned plot was cut, but that’s forced the writers to focus tightly on a few characters, instead of sprawling barely-connected plots everywhere. Jericho’s writers, if you read this: like Hawkins, you are awesome."

I'm not sure how many of my readers have followed the series Jericho. If not, it might be a good idea to check a few episodes of the series out as its story is pretty fascinating. The basic premise is that of a rural community in northwest Kansas (the fictitious town of Jericho) cut off from the rest of the world in the wake of a set of nuclear explosions which end up destroying a number of major urban areas around the US. Over the next several months, the residents struggle with basic survival, maintenance of some semblance of social order, developing some contact with surrounding communities, and redefining meaning in life in what is now a radically different world.

TV Guide Burning Question

Posted by staff.

Source: TV Guide, March 10-16, 2008 issue.

Burning Question:
I noticed that Jericho's shady President Tomarchio is played by Goerge Newbern. The town that Jericho was at war with is called New Bern. Was this a coincidence? Just curious! - Candy McCracken, Centerburg, Ohio.

"It's a total coincidence," says executive producer Carol Barbee. "I'm from North Carolina and there's a lovely little town near the coast named New Bern. But now folks from home want to know why I hate New Bern!

I don't. My writers came up with the name and it stuck. Also, I worked with George Newbern on Providence and when the role of the presdient came up, our casting directors, Sherry Thomas and Sharon Bialy, suggested him. I thought it was a great idea. He's awesome and creepy as president of the Allied States."

The other Tuesday night SF show had much lower numbers by comparison but still showed fair ratings for the LIVE watching crowd. “Jericho” garnered a 1.8/5 share for its efforts, or close to 6 million fans tuning in. While that is nothing to hoop and holler about, this is one particular show that has shown it does much better with the TiVo/DVR crowd and it will be interesting to see what those numbers reveal.

Seven Times Around: Rebuilding Jericho

Here's where you come in. CBS needs to know that the serialized and complex nature of Jericho is not a turn-off for the average TV viewer. Beyond that, CBS needs to know that the political nature of the show, and the implications of the show are interesting to a large majority of people, I'd imagine, at the least, to the readers of this here blog.

Just a quick word about a great show no one watches. Jericho airs on CBS, Tuesday nights at 10:00pm and is a fantastic tale of survival in a small town following a full out nuclear strike of unknown origin. This show is a serial drama so if you like Lost and Heroes, chances are you’ll like this one too. It’s got rich, well developed characters and heavy realistic drama all of which grab you and draw you in fairly quickly.

Thankfully that has not happened so far--but I'm still holding out for the constitutional congress that the mayor left town to attend and there are still three episodes to go. The advertising for the last three imply a third season is unlikely (But hope remains). I still enjoy the series but I think I can make peace with cancellation because I don't know how much more they can run with it.

Good News Jericho (and Big Brother) Fans: CBS Doesn’t Care What I Think!

The Bad News Is CBS Will Punt on Jericho Anyway

I’d suggested moving Jericho to the CW, and received some anti-CW sentiment in the comments as well as e-mail and it’s curious. I have no problem with Jericho being on SciFi, USA, Bravo or some other network that isn’t the CW. SciFi and USA are two of my favorite channels (and I watch both more than CW, though I LOVE me some Supernatural!)

Editor: Please note the Mr. Seidman did not wait even 24 hours before deciding that Ed Harrison, of CBS, was not going to answer his e-mail.

CBS; postapocalyptic drama rose from the ashes of cancellation after devotees inundated the network with thousands of pounds of peanuts (a reference to a line spoken by Skeet Ulrich in last season's finale). So in this year's opener, when Ulrich's character visited a wounded comrade in the hospital, there was a close-up of, yes, peanuts on the patient's bedside table. That's goober-rific!

Securing the Line of Succession [warning: Jericho spoiler included]

Posted by Nathan Nelson.

Source: Red State Network.

Have you ever seen Jericho? It's a TV show on CBS, now in its second season. The basic premise behind Jericho is: What would happen if several nuclear bombs were detonated in major American cities? For a hypothetical answer to this hypothetical question, the show chronicles the trials and triumphs of the small town of Jericho, Kansas in the aftermath of just such a nuclear disaster. At the moment, Jericho viewers don't know who's behind the nuclear devastation. What we did just learn in the last episode is that the nuclear disaster has left the nation without a definitive President; in fact, there are six people throughout the nation who all claim to be the President, including a couple of senators and the man who was actually next in line according to the legal line of succession, the Secretary of Health and Human Services. For those of you who aren't up on the presidential line of succession, that means that the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, the President pro tempore of the Senate, and secretaries of eight Cabinet departments had died in the imaginary disaster.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Saturday, 3/1

It’s a new month, but a Saturday night in March? Pretty much just like any other Saturday night. I now just have boilerplate for FOX’s time-tested lineup of Cops and America’s Most Wanted which was indeed again (and again, and again, etc) the most watched programming on a Saturday with FOX winning both the most overall viewers and the most 18-49 year old viewers.

Do Networks Ignore Sci Fi Fans?

Article by Bruce Simmons.

Source: Screen Rant.

Have you ever wondered why some TV shows are canceled due to supposedly low ratings when it seems like they have a strong following? Sometimes there are obvious reasons - like when CBS scheduled Jericho up against Fox's American Idol, or Journeyman possibly being a victim of bad timing with the writers' strike and too many reality show hitting the networks

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings for Friday, 2/29

Posted by Robert Seidman.

Source: TV By the Numbers.

Just like last week, CBS wins the night overall and in the 18-49 demo followed by FOX, NBC, ABC and the CW. But unlike last week where CBS, FOX and NBC averaged a 2.0 or better in the 18-49 demo, none could break the 18-49 “Mendoza Line“. CBS was best with a 1.9 average in the 18-49 demo for the night.

WonderCon Recap

Posted by Ratkeeper

When I first saw the ad for WonderCon, I thought it would be an opportunity to pass out some of the JKI year-at-a-glance calendars and get some borderline fans to the Jericho websites. I was pleasantly surprised to see the cast of Jericho was going to be there too. When JKI approached WonderCon, we found out that CBS also thought flyers were a good idea, and the CBS contact asked JKI to help pass out the CBS flyers.

Sean and I had decided to stay in the city and attend all three days of WonderCon. That would give us the opportunity to scout out the location for the Jericho panel and figure out how to distribute both flyers.

Saturday night we sat in the hotel room trying to think up questions for the cast, since we heard the audience at the Los Angeles convention had been shy about the Q & A session. While doing this we turned on the TV, and of course being Saturday night, there was nothing on. I turned the hotel TV to TV-on-Demand and noticed that the Jericho premier was available for $5.99. We of course purchased it and watched it while thinking up questions. I was also surprised to realize it was the ONLY CBS show in the on-demand category.

We got up early on Sunday, to get down to the convention center to get in line early for hall A. I wanted to get front row seats for us and the two volunteers who had agreed to help pass out flyers. We met Shaun o’Mac and agreed to save a seat for him too. I sat in the front row and spread the stuff out over the five seats.

Shaun o’Mac delivered the big stack of CBS flyers and took some with him. Sean went to find the convention staff and iron out the details about handing out the flyers. I waited for the two volunteers who were showing up later that morning.

Before the movie trailers, I answered questions from the fans behind me and was pleasantly surprised to see the hall was very full. As the trailers ended, I caught up with Robert and Stephen (our two volunteers) and directed them to the front row.

Then the hall began to empty, and I thought we would end up with a very small crowd. (It turned out that the Terminator cast had just begun to sign autographs and the hall emptied as people got in line). As episode three began Sean came back, and took Robert, Stephen and a few convention volunteers and got the CBS flyer and the JKI flyer passed out. All of the handouts went flying across the rows and disappeared into the hands of the eager fans.

As the episode played, the people who had gotten autographs came back into the hall and by the time the Jericho cast came out there was about 1000 people in the audience.

Here is a link to the panel discussion and the Q & A session:

TV.Com Link

Fortunately, the fans had a lot of questions, so JKI only asked one. Robert asked about the TiVo Most Recorded Show List and how the cast/crew felt about Jericho’s high ranking on that list.

I think it was a great turnout for Jericho, and there were a lot of appreciative fans in the audience.

I'd like to thank Robert and Stephen for volunteering to hand out flyers.
