Digital revenue may be small, but it is beautiful and growing and the era of free giveaways is over, execs at MIPTV said Monday.
"I have a pretty strong point of view that new-media rights should be viewed as a separate window, not just a throw-in," said Ben Pyne, president of global distribution at Disney-ABC Worldwide Television and Disney Media Networks. "It should be monetized. I think you are making a mistake if you just give things away."

If you haven't ordered Jericho on your Netflix yet, do it. It's a VERY good show and unusually seditious... which is why I think it was canceled. It's not perfect mind you. It still goes on about saving the United States, but it does point out the more glaring contradictions in the system.

I had heard of the TV-show Jericho back when it came out. I knew that it was post-Apocalyptic and dealt with the “what-if” scenario of nuclear attacks in the US, something I think about far more than I should. I knew it starred Skeet Ulrich, who is a solid actor that never really did much considering the talent that he had (I think all of the early-Johnny Depp comparisons hurt the guy). I knew that it gained a pretty huge cult following fairly quickly and after the cancellation of the first season, a bunch of loyal fans sent 40,000 pounds of peanuts to CBS offices in protest, which brought it back for a second season before being canceled again. I never watched it while it was on though, mostly because I have major commitment issues and can only watch shows that I can watch on my own time, when I am ready and bored, whether online or through DVD.

Earlier this week, we reported on the plans for a Jericho comic book that would carry on where the television series left off and we mentioned that the fate of the previously announced movie was uncertain. However, the most recent word is that progress for the big screen turn for the series continues to move forward. Co-executive producer of the now defunct television series, Dan Shotz, has said that he is still working toward a movie adaptation of the show along with several of the other producers who worked on the Jericho.

We are rapidly living in a world where a failed television show doesn’t necessarily mean a failed franchise. To some degree, it’s been that way for a while for some shows. After all, Star Trek barely got three seasons on television, but lived on for long enough through movies to find more success, eventually spawning additional series. Firefly’s big screen debut may not have been the hit the Browncoats were hoping for, but it was still an excellent chapter in Joss Whedon’s story. Even sitcoms are getting into the act, with that long rumored Arrested Development movie in the works again.

Viacom president and chief executive Philippe Daumann said the company was committed to making its content available on whatever platform consumers wanted to find it, but appeared skeptical about the idea of authenticating consumers as pay-TV subscribers before offering access to online video.
Some pay-TV providers and Time Warner chief executive Jeffrey Bewkes have been floating an idea of tying online viewing to TV viewing and the authentication concept derives from the need to prevent people from watching long form video that cable operators have paid dearly to deliver to their customers.

Yes, there are plans to move forward with that comic adaptation of CBS's post-apocalyptic series Jericho. But that doesn't mean that the proposed movie is dead in the water. Of course, it doesn't sound like it's exactly moving forward either. Well, as regular readers of this particular internets movie website column know, I'm a bit of a nerd for the now cult post apocalyptic TV show "Jericho," the Skeet Ulrich starring CBS show that was cancelled, brought back, then cancelled again, but still just won't die. There's been rampant talk ever since the show was cancelled for a second time that the show's creators were hankering to keep the franchise going, either as a TV show, a comic book, a series of direct-to-video movies or "movie of the week" type movies, or as an actual big screen movie. For a while, nothing happened. Then, a few weeks ago, one of the producers said (and I saw this on imdb.com) that they were finally moving forward on a big screen version of the show and that they were trying to figure out how to transfer the show into a two hour movie (that was what was more or less said. I'm paraphrasing here).

Jericho Lives: The story of Jericho will continue, but not necessarily in the same medium that spawned it. Devil’s Due Publishing has closed a deal with CBS to create a Jericho comic book that will pick up where the television series left off at the end of Season 2. The show’s original producers, including Dan Shotz, Jon Turteltaub, Carol Barbee, will be directly involved in developing the comic book series. There is currently no word on the release date for the series or whether this indicates that the previously announced big screen adaptation will not go forward. Series star Skeet Ulrich recently received a casting in a pilot for CBS which could hamper his involvement in such a movie.

It’s just possible that cancellation was a good thing for Jericho. When they heard that CBS was dumping the series after one season, thousands of dedicated fans banded together to convince the network to bring it back. Though the second season wasn’t a big success ratings-wise, the show’s fanbase had united and remained committed to the show. The CW’s decision to start airing repeats of Jericho on Sunday nights was likely inspired by fans’ ongoing support. Now, the Jericho story is set to continue in comic form and possibly a movie.

When Jericho returned from the TV graveyard with seven fresh Season Two episodes, the series gave some semblance of closure to a few storylines. However, we never learned enough about the shadowy conspiracy behind the large-scale nuclear attack on major U.S. cities, Cheyenne’s rebel government takeover bid, or what ultimately happened to Jake, Robert and the residents of Jericho. Those stories will now be told in illustrated print, as Devil’s Due Publishing has partnered with the show’s original producers to distribute all-new Jericho comic books. “We’re so thrilled about the endless possibilities for the future,” co-exec producer Dan Shotz said. “We plan to give fans the story they’ve been craving. This is going to be epic stuff.” Earlier this year, plans were also announced for a big-screen feature film, so there’s still plenty of interest in the gripping post-Apocalyptic tale.

Jericho was one of those shows that I sort of liked, but as it went on, it just got really dull and silly, and I just tuned out after a couple of episodes. What really got me most about the show was just how indifferent people seem to be about that whole “end of America” part, and still kept on with their affairs, money grubbing ways, etc. Really? Eh. Anyways, the show is coming back, this time as a comic book.

This is great news for fans of the ill-fated show, and it speaks to a larger trend: fan-favourite TV shows are finding new life via comics (think Buffy: Season 8 , Farscape, and Firefly). It's hard to deny the passion that fans of CBS's late apocalyptic drama Jericho had. Their "nuts" campaign prompted the network to reverse order and bring back the show after officially canceling it. That second season did provide some closure on many of the dangling plot threads, but some fans felt it didn't live up to the quality of the first. Whether this had to do with the reduced episode order or the reduced budget is uncertain, but none of that matters now

Analysts say CBS will likely have to borrow money to service its debt, The Los Angeles Times reports. The network chief financial officer said last month that CBS could handle its debt though 2010 with cash and cash flow. Barclay’s Scott Shiffman is not convinced, saying the network could have a deficit of as much as $893 million for bonds maturing in 2010. One way to avoid the outcome is for the company to sell new debt to pay off the $1.4 billion maturing in mid-2010.

The high-profile premium movie JV from Viacom (NYSE: VIA), Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate, now called Epix, is still optimistic on getting a distribution deal on cable or satellite by fall this year, despite worsening economic conditions. The JV has already announced that it will go ahead with an online/broadband launch in May. So far, the four studios have invested $35 million in it (and more may have to come), and have said that Lionsgate would produce the channel’s first original TV series, a drama about a Nashville music family called “Tough Trade”, reports LAT.
