We are all Nielsen families now: The Death of TV, Part 2

Posted by staff.

Source: Nathan Bowers.

TV and radio are by their very nature terrible at measuring what we like. You can’t just broadcast energy waves all over the place and reliably get a user count, to say nothing of measuring how the audience feels or what actions they take based on advertising.

Too bad for old media, Google can measure those things, and Google does it really well

Grand Finale

Article by Jim Colucci.

Source: Watch! June 2008, The CBS Magazine.

May is the month to say goodbye . . . Parting can be such series sorrow.

Watch! takes a look at our favorite finales in CBS history, episodes providing the perfect signoffs for some beloved TV friends.

Jericho
Episode "Why We Fight,"
May 9, 2007

Big Finish: Talk about going out with a bang! For a while there, it looked like Jericho and its star Skeet Ulrich were going to have to leave us in suspence forever, thanks to an inadvertent series finale. The show's first season closed on May 9 with "Why We Fight," in which Ulrich's character, Jake, and his allies prepare for an impending battle against the sinister neighboring town of New Bern. A cloud of dust settles over the town as Jake gives the order to fire, and then . . . Well, it looked like we'd never know, because the show was canceled on May 16, when CBS presented a Skeet-free lineup. But, in a relative rarity for tlevision, the show's fans organized an offensive. Seizing on a line from the episode - in which Jake quotes his grandfather's story of American soldiers saying "Nuts!" to a Nazi-proffered surrender - they found a willing conconspirator (and a very smart marketer) in Web vendor nutsonline.com and began deluging CBS brass with peanuts and cashews. The result? The network responded, ordering seven episodes to constitute Jericho's second season. The date, for conspiracy theorists wanting to draw out this World War II connection, was June 6.

Final Word: Closure comes full circle, with fans now demanding at least a satisfying ending and ending up rewriting history. The lesson? If you want to get a network executive's attention, send food.

CBS Confirms Its Business Model

Article by Charles Warner.

Source: Huffington Post.

When CBS bought the billboard company, International Outdoor Advertising, last week, it confirmed that it was in the advertising delivery business and that its mission was to try to maximize profits for its shareholders. CBS thus distanced itself even further from the values of the CBS of Paley, Stanton, and Edward R. Murrow -- a proud old CBS -- in which serving the public good was a mission, or at least a consideration.

Television News - Jericho.

Posted by staff.

Source: DV-Ent.net.

Well this isn't really news, just my opinion of the show after finally watching it. The first 8 episodes had me hooked and then... fizzled. I can see why they canceled it but at the same time the 2nd season obviously was rushed to finish as much of the story plot as possible. However, maybe if it was around for three or more seasons the story line would have been more flushed out and intriguing.

Shows are on bubble as networks plan fall schedule

Article by Tom Dorsey.

Source: Courier-Journal.com.

It's that time of year when the networks sharpen their hatchets to ax shows from the fall schedule.

The publishing of such lists every spring is a signal for people to organize save-our-show campaigns, and this year, more than ever, they'll be energized by the fact that such a campaign led to CBS resurrecting "Jericho" after it had been declared dead and buried last season. Of course, the network just killed it off a second time due to low ratings. Three times won't be the charm for that drama.

Update from Karim

Posted by Rubberpoultry.

Source: CBS Jericho Message Board.

I've been traveling on business this past week, so I've been a bit uplugged. After reading some posts last night, I thought it would be nice to check in with Karim to see what the latest is. We exchanged a couple of emails, and I wanted to share what I learned (Karim said it was OK). There's not too much to report, but sometimes it's just nice to know things are still moving.

He, Dan Shotz, Jon Steinberg and Carol Barbee have meeting on the books, and are currently meeting with executives on other possibilities for Jericho. This is a busy time of year in the TV industry, so this process will take some time but they are committed to it. He also said that they'd keep us in the loop as info becomes clearer. And finally, Karim said, "Can't begin to thank you enough for everything you guys are doing on the Message Boards."

I think they want Jericho to return as much as we do and are doing everything in their power to bring Jericho back. They're still watching what we're doing here as well. Let's keep up the fight for them and for us!

Pay No Attention To That Man Behind The Curtain: Questions Nielsen Would Prefer Went Unanswered

Article by Frank S. Foster.

Source: TV Board, Medispost Blog.

From the moment I stumbled onto the television audience measurement industry in 1999, what I have found utterly unexplainable is not how Nielsen maintains its stranglehold on the industry — with that I am well acquainted. No, what has perplexed me is how Nielsen executives manage never to talk about how they do what they do. More than a billion dollars a year in revenue (not to mention the $250 Billion or so spent in Los Angeles and New York chasing Nielsen’s approval) and virtually no published analysis concerning changes in data collection technologies, ascription policies, and weighting or stratification of the sample? Zip. Zero. Nothin’. Nada. It would be comical were it not so fiendishly frightening.

In typical white guy fashion (bear with me), I spent the week and weekend finishing watching the first season of Jericho. To be frank, the story is a bit contrived. The situations absurd. The acting often poor. Every episode is full of things that are wrong or inaccurate. For a series based on surprises, every episode is predictable. And, I’ve never seen such abuse of tobacco graduated filters. Every time there’s an outdoor shot, on goes the filters. Make it stop!

The Single Currency Myth: Why The Television ‘Metric’ Is In Need Of Some Company

While the lively debate may have occasionally detracted from the discussion of set-top box data concerns, I thought the takeaway from the panel was clear: a number of the purported "issues" surrounding set-top box data have not only been evaluated but many have been solved by (among others) researchers at TNS and Rentrak. It was then particularly frustrating for me to overhear as the audience was moving toward the exits, a disheartening comment from an experienced media buyer, "In the end it doesn't really matter because we have to have a single currency and the panel is the only way to get it." Ah, those in charge of the Nielsen propaganda machine must be working overtime again.

Audience spoke loud and clear Tuesday night simply by staying away from CBS's debut of SECRET TALENTS OF THE STARS, a new unscripted TV series that hit the canvas even before the bell was finished ringing, reported Reuters.

Ironically enough, this was the replacement series for JERICHO which was only given a seven episode, second season run in the same time slot before being cancelled after its season finale aired. CBS Cancels 'Secret Talents of the Stars' After One Episode

Article by Don Williams.

Sometimes a television show fails so spectacularly that it gets canceled after just one airing. This shameful group contains such forgettable embarrassments as Quarterlife, Emily's Reasons Why Not, Anchorwoman, and The Will. We can now add one more series to this list, as CBS has announced that they're yanking Secret Talents of the Stars from the air after one broadcast. The show aired Tuesday night at 10pm in Jericho's old time slot, but it didn't prove to be a successful replacement for the post-apocalyptic drama. The reality competition pulled in only 4.6 million viewers, forcing CBS to send it to the scrap heap.

It appears that the reports of Jericho’s demise may have been greatly exaggerated as the show has become the Lazarus of television. ‘Jericho’ May Return From the Ashes

Posted by Gray.

Source: Sormlight.org.

Jericho, the CBS television series that was canceled because of low ratings, then revived following protests from fans, then canceled again because of low ratings, may be revived a second time, the New York Times reported today (Monday). The newspaper said that CBS may follow NBC’s recent example with Friday Night Lights in which it sold the DirecTV satellite service the right to air the series before it goes on network TV. The Times said that CBS is considering a similar option in negotiations with cable provider Comcast. Meanwhile, although DirecTV executives have expressed confidence that the Friday Night Lights deal could drive new subscribers to their service, some analysts are expressing skepticism about its ability to do so and forecasting that the DirecTV episodes will wind up being pirated on the Internet.”

Although nothing is set in stone, it appears that Comcast is interested in putting together a production deal that could keep the fan-favorite "Jericho" on for a third season by footing some of the bill, at least that's what The New York Times is reporting.

Well, I must say that this is very interesting news.

Apparently, CBS is talking to Comcast about a deal that could save Jericho similar to the one that NBC struck with DirectTV to save Friday Night Lights:

DirecTV Deal Will Subsidize ‘Friday Night Lights’

Article by Brian Stelter.

Source: The New York Times.

For television networks, it is a common quandary: what do you do about a show that critics adore, that has a passionate base of fans, but that consistently gets mediocre ratings?

Television executives say this model could help keep other sentimental favorites on the air. For instance, CBS Paramount Network Television has held talks with Comcast, the cable provider, about finding new life for “Jericho,” the low-rated drama canceled by CBS last month, according to two people briefed on the talks who requested anonymity.

In an article in the New York Times about Friday Night Lights, it was casually dropped midway through that something similar could be in the works for Jericho.

Can Nielsen Still Reign Supreme?

Article by Brian Steinburg.

Source: Mediaworks.

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The wonky game of counting viewers has been a slow and steady one since 1950, the year Nielsen Media Research began to track who was watching all those brand-new TV sets. But now the longstanding leader in audience measurement finds itself in the midst of palpable drama. As consumers flock to video of all sorts in all places, can TV-ratings kingpin Nielsen maintain its dominance as the gold standard by which video advertising is priced?

Why Did Jericho Get Axed (Again)?

Posted by Amber.

Source: Watching Jericho.

I’ve been trying to think of why it is that I seem to be the Kiss of Death to some TV shows (See: The 4400, Journeyman, Dresden Files, etc.). I’m sure that I’m not alone in this feeling, as I hear it quite often from friends and even strangers. While I can’t shake the feeling that I am this Harbinger of Doom to some series, I really think I can lay the second cancellation of Jericho mainly at CBS’s feet, not at mine. Ok, maybe not “mainly”, but there were some seemingly purposeful “mistakes” on CBS’s part that truly hurt the show.

Don’t Tread On Me - New Call to Get Back Jericho

Posted by Sam.

Source: Slice of SciFi.

First net savvy, intelligent SF fans inundated CBS with 40,000 pounds of peanuts after CBS execs canceled “Jericho.” They got their inspiration from the lead character, Jake Green’s response to a call to surrender from a stronger force that was rising against the small Kansas town. That major sign of protest on the part of fans got them a shortened second season which just ended. Now comes the next wave to get some other network or cable station to acquire the rights to the show and put out a third season of this fan favorite that won’t go down easy.

Jericho

Posted by staff.

Source: TV in Focus, SCi Fi Magazine April 2008

"We pitched the seoncd season to the network as 'occupation, resistance and revolution', and that's a beginning, middle, end of the season," says executive producer Carol Barbee. "Last season was about surviving a nuclear attack and saving a town. This year it's about saving the country and a way of life and system of government. And next season will be about saving the world. So it is expanding and becoming a more epic story."

The Cheyenne government that appeared to save the day in Jericho's war with New Bern turns out to be one of several governments that have sprung up across the country, says Barbee.

"There is food and products, and people can get things they need, and we start to get cell phones and all the rest of it. So we get communication back. But there is a price to be paid for that, because the Cheyenne government is a bit of a rebel government. However, the real government, the real heirs to the democratically elected government of the United States, are in Columbus, Ohio."

Another factor will be a group of contractors called Jennings and Rall, who've been hired by "the Cheyenne government to do the day-to-day rebuilding. They are our version of Halliburton."

With seven episodes ordered and completed, Barbee hopes it all adds up to viewers being hungry for another season. "I think this season tells a great, great story, and it leaves us on the prepicice where Jake and Hawkins have another thing they need to do. And we want to see them do it."
