Nielsen Probe Finds People Not Pushing Buttons Properly: The Bigger The Audience, The Bigger The Discrepancy

Article by Joe Mandese.

Source: Media Daily News.

Nielsen Wednesday began informing advertisers, agencies and television networks that rely on its national TV ratings that a significant number of people don't use its so-called "people meter" system properly. In fact, new data being released by Nielsen shows that the more people that are present in those TV ratings households, the more likely it is that they are not reporting their viewing accurately, and that the overall affect has been understating the national TV ratings by about 8%.

Nielsen Begins Measuring Internet Usage In TV Ratings Sample

Article by Joe Mandese.

More often than not, good television series get killed off way before their time has actually come. We all know the example of Firefly, which we discussed earlier, or something like Dead Like Me (one of my favourite all-time TV shows). Another example of a killer series that was just oozing with potential, but which sadly got cancelled too early is Jericho.

Jericho - One of the Most Underated Shows In The Last Few Years

Posted by owner.

It was The Dark Knight who started me thinking about Jericho the other day. He was actually the one who got me watching it, and DK I thank you for that. After he wrote on here recently that there's a possible movie coming out alongside a comic based on the series (both of which I can't wait for) I thought I'd post about how aggrieved I feel when a perfectly good series gets sent to cancellation Hell.

TiVo: One step closer to the new Nielsen

TiVo is apparently moving farther into Nielsen territory. Specifically, it's launching local-market measurement this summer, which is itself uninteresting except to network affiliates, advertisers, and the hardest-core TV ratings geeks. But the bigger issue is that TiVo is continuing to creep into the ratings business, having already launched a national service in February 2007.

How Will Nielsen Battle Back?

Article by Sarah Ball.

Source: Newsweek.

Warranted or not, Nielsen's ratings are often blasted as non-representative and capriciously collected. Just last week, Slate blasted the company's box system for skewing the numbers at this crucial point in the TV year, right before May sweeps.  The Big Money argues that if you really want to stage a "Save My Show" campaign, you and all your friends had better watch it online -- rather than on your old TV set.  At least then, your "vote" will be counted -- Chadwick Martin argues that you just can't trust Nielsen's minute sample size and clunky system to pick up on a groundswell movement.

Pali's Greenfield eviscerates Viacom, Dauman

Article by Paul Sweeting.

Source: Content Agenda.

Pali Research media analyst Rich Greenfield just destroys Paramount and its CEO Philippe Dauman in a report issued Monday, while lowering its rating on the stock from buy to neutral. "While we continue to believe Viacom’s assets are undervalued, we simply do not believe its management team is capable of closing the valuation gap, particularly given a pattern of poor decision-making, the lack of respect Dauman has from his employees, peer media company managements and investors, as well as a Board of Directors that continues to excessively reward underperforming management," Greenfield writes.

Editor: It should be noted that this media analyst has been reported as having a grudge with Viacom's CEO Phillippe Dauman.

TiVo Tries To Be the Hero

Article by Chadwick Matlin.

The television industry is fueled by competition. NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, the CW, MyTV, cable networks, the list goes on and on. Their raison d'être is to push out a fixed amount of inventory to a fixed amount of people for a fixed amount of time. Thus, rivalries stew and fester. (That so many of the channels are owned by so few companies is a conversation for another time.)

Prime Timeshift: TiVo Finds It's Concentrating Around The 'Family Hour'

Article by Joe Mandese.

Source: Media Daily News.

It's long been known that peak usage of time-shifting TV viewing technologies such as DVRs, video-on-demand, Slingboxes, and other devices, tends to occur during prime-time when the greatest concentration of the most desirable "counter-programming" is scheduled. But a new analysis released Thursday by DVR marketer TiVo finds that the volume of time-shifting activity is rising, and is concentrating around television's so-called "Family Hour," - 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

JEBS - Update for 4/7

April 5, 2009

Hello Fellow Rangers,

I wanted to address a few things. As you know the Welcome Home to Jericho event is going forward and will be held at the Sportsman Lodge in LA April 24-26. We need to get the following link posted. The event is a charity event to raise money for Operation Home Front to donate funds to the families of deployed soldiers.

Many of the cast and crew will be attending. There is a special one Day event fee for Saturday which is the day we will be having the auction, meet and greet with the cast and the dinner. This is a real opportunity to help people and to promote the show in LA. We need to get people there, especially on Saturday April 25th so lets get the word out to the non-online community.

Right now we have been watching writing, emailing since November. Casey Dog and Myvibes have been documenting the numbers and ratings, NorsU and K6 and the RG crew have been keeping their game alive. Rat Keeper has been keeping people updated with JEBS.

As I mentioned back in November and Shaun did way back in March of 2008 this was not going to be an easy or quick fight like what happened following season 1. Epix still remains a target along with the CW and CBS Paramount. With the latest announcement from NBC regarding Friday Night Lights getting another 2 year commitment with the NBC/Direct TV partnership there is real hope for Jericho.

We need to continue to complete our feedback forms, write and email but most importantly get the word out word of mouth to continue to garner new fans. Jericho continues on the CW through June 14, 2009 with the remained of Season 1 and Season2 episodes. Sci Fi continues to show Jericho as does Joost, Hulu, CBS.com and other places on the Web. We need to continue to keep Jericho alive by any and all means necessary until we get the right bean counter and executive at CBS Paramount to finally figure out that Jericho is worth something and can be turned into a franchise that will make money.

Most things is life do not come easy, they require hard work, sacrifice and perseverance. They say timing is everything, right now we need to keep Jericho alive so that when that window of opportunity opens Jericho is still there to go through that window. Everything we have done and are doing are not in vane but in fact has created something that CBS Paramount is still trying to figure out. What ever you can give from a letter, email, message in your car window to attending the charity event matters and is appreciated.

We will get the movie and hopefully new episodes from the collective effort of everyone in Fandum.

Has anyone ever seen this show? It's no longer airing new episodes. I don't watch much in the way of tv or movies anymore but this one's on DVD. It's about a United States in the present day which has experienced a catastropic nuclear attack. It's about a small town of Jericho struggling to survive in an America which no longer has a functional government or any infrastructure. This is a very real human drama and quite gripping. Some friends and I watched it one Saturday evening beginning at 8:30pm and, well, watched 16 episodes in a row. We didn't plan on it but it was so gripping... 8:30am and time for church before we knew it! It raises some interesting questions about human nature; what seemingly normal people are capable of in desperate times, both the heroic and the ugly coming from unlikely places
