Barbee on New Life for 'Jericho'

Interview by Marisa Guthrie.

Source: Broadcasting & Cable.

Thousands of e-mails—and enough mixed nuts—were sent to CBS' executive offices to convince entertainment chief Nina Tassler that Jericho needed at least seven more episodes to satisfy fans of the apocalyptic drama. (Fans co-opted a lead character's response—“Nuts!”—when surrender was suggested in a scene.) The network will begin rerunning the last 11 episodes of the first season on July 6 at 9 p.m. ET. The first-season DVD will be released in September. And “with any luck,” says Executive Producer Carol Barbee, those seven new episodes will be on the air next fall. Barbee talks to B&C's Marisa Guthrie about online TV shows, Jericho's fanatical fan base and her controversial series for CBS, Swingtown

Casting Shadows Of Doubt: Jericho Season 3

Article by Rich Becker.

Source: Copywrite Ink.

As much credit as I have given to deserving Jericho fans for convincing CBS to reinstate their program, I'm equally inclined to write how they could unintentionally be responsible for destroying any chance for a season three. Right now it seems, the only shadows being cast by their cause are shadows of doubt.

Jericho Returns!

Article by James Young.

Source: Skeptical Observer.

Apparently, the relatively small fan base of Jericho, on CBS, is intense, and has provoked the network to order more episodes.

This is great news. It gives another chance to one of the more intelligent shows on last year's schedule. And while I always thought the serious subject matter had a dubious chance of success, it would be wonderful if this partial renewal led to another opportunity for this show to find its niche.

Jericho Lives!

Article by Philip W. Palmer.

Source: The Sound Cart.

It was amazing. Close to 25 tons of peanuts, endless phone calls and emails to the network. The largest fan and viewer revolt in TV history worked. Jericho will return to CBS sometime this fall season with at least 7 new episodes. The network will watch this VERY closely, so hopefully the fans will turn out. If there is success, perhaps a season 3. A long shot at best, but that's what the show is all about, survival. Cheers to all the fans who stuck with and supported us.

Struggling Jericho: "Please don't TiVo our show!"

Article by Ken Fisher.

Source: ars technica.

The post-nuclear apocalypse drama Jericho was canceled by CBS earlier this year, but the network relented and renewed the show for seven more episodes after disappointed fans sent 25 tons of peanuts to CBS in protest. It's a great story of grassroots fan support.

Now that they've got seven more episodes to get it fired up again, some of the show's talent is speaking up about what they think hurt their ratings. Speaking with OnMilwaukee, actor Brad Beyer answered suggestions that the plot of the show was too slow by saying that the real problem with Jericho is that viewers weren't watching it as it was broadcast.

Creating Fandom: The Jericho Universe

Posted by Rich Bedker.

Source: Copywrite Ink.

This piece would have been better served as seven posts, but since my blog is more about business communication than fandom, I felt it would best serve me to fast-track some solutions for Jericho fans and CBS with seven points and hopefully turn the largest show cancellation protest into the beginnings of a long-running series with more mileage than anyone imagined, fans included.

CBS Revives ‘Jericho,’ With a Plea to Fans

Article by Edward Wyatt.

Source: New York Times.

The resurrection of “Jericho” after its cancellation by CBS reflected the efforts of thousands of fans who, because they regularly viewed the show on the Internet or through other nontraditional, on-demand formats, might not have been counted in the familiar Nielsen television ratings.

Because CBS finances its shows based on measures of viewership of regularly scheduled broadcasts, “it’s of primary importance,” Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment, said in an interview.

“We want them to watch on Wednesday at 8 o’clock,” or whenever CBS schedules the return of the series later this year, Ms. Tassler said. “And we need them to recruit new viewers who are going to watch the broadcast.”

Fan protest saves US show Jericho

Source: BBC News.

Post-apocalypse TV drama Jericho has been saved from cancellation following an internet campaign by its fans.
US TV network CBS axed the show last month, triggering a protest that culminated in shipments of nuts being sent to the broadcaster.

"Wow!" said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler in a letter to the fans. "You got our attention."

Tassler said seven new episodes of the drama had been ordered, with more to follow if ratings improve.

CBS eyes 'Jericho' resurrection

Posted by staff.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter.

There are no deals in place, and there are several hurdles to overcome, but the fact that the network is moving to resurrect the canceled freshman series is a testament to the legions of loyal fans who have been relentless in their campaign for saving the show, including sending tens of thousands of pounds of nuts to top CBS executives. The network is said to have options on all actors, but deals need to be modified to reflect the unusual timing and size of the order. Proposed budget reductions would lead to some of "Jericho's" characters not returning for the abbreviated second season.

What lessons do we learn from CBS' 'Jericho' reprieve?

Article by Daniel Fienberg.

Source: Zap2it.

Let me begin by saying that I'm happy for all of you Jericho fans out there. Just because a fourth of you abandoned the show in the spring doesn't mean that the rest of you shouldn't enjoy it.

But do you know who won't be so happy with CBS' choice to reconsider the drama's previous cancelation? The heads of the other four networks. [Yeah, I'm including The CW, even if it's just CBS' baby sister and they're under the same ownership.] No, none of the bigwigs would say that they're unhappy. They'd talk about how this is a sign that networks listen to their viewers. But at NBC and ABC and FOX and The CW, they know that a somewhat dangerous precedent will be set.

CBS One-Ups God, Rebuilds Jericho! (Holy Frak!)

Article by Kristin Veitch.

Source: Watch with Kristin on E! Online.

You did it! Holy frak, you did it!

Not since Family Guy's miraculous resurrection has a fandom actually been able to bring a show back from the dead...until now. Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, just posted on the official message boards that Jericho is coming back! Here's what you need to know:

CBS has ordered seven new episodes.
There could be more, but only if the ratings improve.

The DVD is out Sept. 25.
The creators will be "continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return."
Nina likes you! "On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of Jericho in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference."

Nutty 'Jericho' Fans Make CBS Reconsider Canceling Show

Article by Scott Mayerowitz.

Source: ABC News.

A campaign to send CBS thousands and thousands of pounds of peanuts to protest the network's decision to cancel a television show appears to be working.

When CBS canceled "Jericho," a show about life in a small town after several nuclear bombs go off across the country, its fans started to rebel.

Internet chat rooms -- including a popular one on CBS's own Web site -- filled with talk about how to convince the network to bring back the show.

One method: nuts.

"JERICHO" PICKED UP FOR MIDSEASON -- A LETTER FROM NINA TASSLER TO "JERICHO" FANS

Posted by staff.

Source: CBS Press.

To the Fans of Jericho:

Wow!

Over the past few weeks you have put forth an impressive and probably unprecedented display of passion in support of a prime time television series. You got our attention; your emails and collective voice have been heard.

As a result, CBS has ordered seven episodes of "Jericho" for mid-season next year. In success, there is the potential for more. But, for there to be more "Jericho," we will need more viewers.

A loyal and passionate community has clearly formed around the show. But that community needs to grow. It needs to grow on the CBS Television Network, as well as on the many digital platforms where we make the show available.

We will count on you to rally around the show, to recruit new viewers with the same grass-roots energy, intensity and volume you have displayed in recent weeks.

At this time, I cannot tell you the specific date or time period that "Jericho" will return to our schedule. However, in the interim, we are working on several initiatives to help introduce the show to new audiences. This includes re-broadcasting "Jericho" on CBS this summer, streaming episodes and clips from these episodes across the CBS Audience Network (online), releasing the first season DVD on September 25 and continuing the story of Jericho in the digital world until the new episodes return. We will let you know specifics when we have them so you can pass them on.

On behalf of everyone at CBS, thank you for expressing your support of "Jericho" in such an extraordinary manner. Your protest was creative, sustained and very thoughtful and respectful in tone. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Nina Tassler

President, CBS Entertainment

P.S. Please stop sending us nuts : )

Resurrection: The fans save 'Jericho'

Article by Maria Elena Fernandez.

Source: Los Angeles Times.

Sometimes going a little nutty is a good thing.

For weeks, "Jericho" junkies have been firing e-mails (effectively shutting down InBoxes at CBS and this newspaper), signing petitions and sending bags of nuts to CBS headquarters in protest.

The assault seems to have worked, "Jericho" creator and executive producer Carol Barbee said Tuesday. CBS executives are in discussions with the show's producers and actors to resuscitate the show -- killed just last month -- for an eight-episode run in mid-season.

Some Cancelled Series Find Themselves Resuscitated

Article by Jackson Reeves.

Source: The Celebrity Cafe.

Some cancelled TV series find themselves on top of a large pile of similar shows from days-of-yore, a pile that rests on a repeatedly bloodied cutting room floor, or should we say upcoming-network-line-up room floor. All of this just adds to the chagrin of the vexed former viewer of said series.

But sometimes diehard viewers manage to champion campaigns to the networks to get their formerly deceased – and probably maniacally decapitated after failed attempts at reconfiguration, as with recently axed Veronica Mars – shows back on air, if only briefly. It happened back in 1991 when ABC caved to the demands of Twin Peaks aficionados, who relentlessly mailed the network Barbie dolls wrapped in plastic (an allusion to one of the defining initial shots of the series) and logs (an allusion to the series’ legendarily cryptic Log Lady), and agreed to air the final episodes of the series’ second season, thus providing some semblance of closure.

The campaign to save Jericho is now called the biggest viewer revolt in television history. Check out www.nutsonline.com to see the up to date pound count of nuts sent to CBS. It's absolutely awesome to see the fan support of our show. We only wish that CBS would acknowlege the fans, but that seems a long shot. Keep this up! They have to listen eventually!

Other Networks Interested In 'Jericho'

Article by Michael Hinman.

Source: SyFy Portal.

Although rumors are persisting that CBS has no intention of bringing back its cancelled post-apocalytic series "Jericho," the series' former showrunner Carol Barbee assured fans late Thursday night that CBS has not given up, and even if they do, there might be a future for the show elsewhere.

"We heard there were some rumors, that some of the [network] affiliates had been talking in Las Vegas, that 'Jericho' was dead and all that. But we wanted to let everyone know that one of the reasons we haven't been on to talk [is that] we are working those channels behind the scenes," Barbee told online radio host Shaun Daily on his audio program. "We are the ones who are trying to broker something with CBS, and there are other networks interested. There is interest."
