TV Viewers Are Getting Older, Or… ?

Posted by Fred.

Source: TVoholic.

Posted by NorsU on the CBs Jericho Forum.

A new study from research firm Magna Global shows that network TV audience has aged out of the demographic advertisers are fond of, and plenty of reports are already commenting on how the TV audience is getting older, stating that, for the first time, the average live median age for the five broadcast networks combined is now 50.

Jericho

I wanted to recommend an under-rated, relatively-unheard of tv show called Jericho. It is about a small town in Kansas, USA supposedly 200 miles away from Denver. The main plot is that a nuclear acttack has occurred in Denver and the people of Jericho can see the mushroom cloud. Panic ensues as to what happened, and their worst fears were realised when they discover that this attack is much larger than first thought

Jericho - It Will Blow You Away

Posted by AlexD.

Source: Happening Now.

Jericho, perhaps one of the best shows to hit TV in a long time was cancelled after 1 season, after fan protests the show was revived from the grave for a 7-episode second season return, but cancelled again right after.

There has been a lot of further protest about the second cancellation of the series, but most blogs that show up on news sites have been covering the protests, and not looking at the actual content of Jericho. What is it that makes Jericho what it is? Is the cancellation of this series worth protesting about?

Ratings, Reality and Fan Campaigns: Save Jericho Again

Written by PMary2.

Source: Press Release for Nuts to Hollywood Reporter.

Television ratings are down 20% and executives and analysts are scrambling to understand what fans of CBS’s post apocalyptic drama Jericho have been saying for a year: the old viewing and counting systems no longer apply.  Jericho stands at the apex of the debate going on at television networks and in newspapers throughout the country.

Reality TV is dumbing down our world.  The savvy viewer is tuning out network television where the fare ranges from Wipeout to Big Brother.  Refusing to accept such mindless entertainment as Secret Talents of the Stars, fans of scripted television are choosing to view their shows at their convenience.  The favored target audience of the 18-49 year old educated buyers now consume their media on a variety of on-demand platforms, platforms that bypass Nielsen, and that networks are unsure how to exploit.

Jericho has become a reference point in media discussions of the accuracy of Nielsen ratings and fan-driven efforts to save shows. While the second season Nielsen numbers reported steadily around six million, Jericho's position on the Live +7 (DVR) was solidly in the top fifteen overall and in the top five of all non-reality television shows.  (tvbythenumbers.com)  Jericho was routinely in the top ten iTunes downloads.  (New York Daily News) The CBS Jericho website is in the top ten of all television websites.  Quincy Smith, who runs CBS' new media division, said the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho has a bigger online audience than it does on traditional TV.  (USA Today)

While CBS trumpeted Jericho’s online success, they would not make the commitment to new media that was required.  Perhaps to buoy their disappointing standings with traditional Nielsen ratings, NBC Universal is embracing Nielsen Online’s VideoCensus as an analysis tool.  NBC Universal is committed to quantifying their online viewers.

Show-level data is something that advertisers have been asking for and NBC Universal is confident   the numbers we’re releasing through Nielsen Online’s VideoCensus are both accurate and illustrative of the dramatic engagement that content from NBC Digital Entertainment delivers,” said Peter Naylor, Senior Vice President, Digital Media Sales. “We’re committed to working with advertisers to advance their understanding of how media performs across platforms and across audiences. (tvbythenumbers.com)

The Jericho fans refuse to be uncounted.  They are making their presence known by funding ads in “The Hollywood Reporter” and “Variety.”  Fans of Jericho raised over $6,000 toward a fan-created television ad.  The “Save Jericho Again” 30-second spot is airing on Time-Warner Cable in the Los Angeles market. http://youtube.com/watch?v=qBbFL17tqos

Fans also pooled their resources to place a giant billboard in Studio City, CA to convince CBS Paramount to “Sell Jericho.”  The billboard is situated at Ventura and Vineland within a mile of potential buyers as well as CBS.  http://youtube.com/watch?v=ljP322HfBoA

After receiving more than 40,000 pounds of peanuts, CBS announced it would bring Jericho back last June.  CBS reinstated the program for a shortened season. In an open letter to the fans, CBS President Nina Tassler charged the fans with the responsibility of marketing Jericho. Coming off the heat of the fan-based publicity campaign, CBS waited eight months before the new episodes aired.  CBS did not assist through their less-than-aggressive marketing strategy and placement: Tuesdays at 10:00 PM.  CBS canceled Jericho for a second time on March 21.

The argument to the “Sell Jericho” campaign is that the over six million fans would be a welcome ratings boost on networks such as SciFi, USA, TNT, Hallmark and the CW. In April, The New York Times reported that Comcast is exploring a potential partnership with CBS Paramount in a deal similar to the NBC / Direct TV pact that saved Friday Night Lights.  The Jericho Producers, Carol Barbee and Jonathan Steinberg report that talks are on-going.

Google “Jericho” and find more websites, blogs, articles, news stories and “buzz” than almost any other television show in history.  The battle for quality scripted programming and the outcry of fans demanding networks to respond to the changing platforms continues.

The two boxes, the television and the computer, are converging.  The network that learns to harness that power will be the network that embraces the future.  If television executives continue to turn a blind eye to the changing viewing platforms, they will find themselves in the same position as the music business.

The fans are out there.  Smart buyers will learn how to count them.

Jericho Ads Appear More Often On TV Than Jericho

Posted by Graeme McMillan.

Source: i09.

How many times does the world have to end for people to accept it? If you're talking about fans of CBS' failed apocalypse drama Jericho, the answer would appear to be "at least three." Apparently the cancellation, fan-outcry-inspired resurrection and subsequent re-cancellation of the show haven't dulled their appetites to make Skeet Ulrich America's favorite rural dystopian leading man. Under the jump, view the triumph of blind, terrifying hope over experience.

U.S. TV drama JERICHO could be heading to the big screen, according to the show's stars ASHLEY SCOTT and BRAD BEYER.

The series - a portrayal of America post-nuclear attacks - was axed by network CBS in March (08) after a small, devoted group of fans begged TV bosses to green light a second series last year (07).

But now supporters of the programme could be in for a treat if movie bosses give the go ahead for a film version of the show.

Those wacky "Jericho" fans are once again saying "nuts" to cancellation, though. Having saved the show once, only to see it get so-so numbers in the middle of the writers strike, fans of the CBS show have now ponied up $6000 for a basic cable ad in and around Hollywood in hopes of convincing decision-makers to change their minds. TV By The Numbers says the shows producers have been supportive of the fan efforts and say there are still talks about making a place for the show on a cable outlet such as Sci Fi.

AMERICAN VALUES

Article by Vicki Crawford.

This isn't to say that television is totally without merit. Sometimes a show comes along that proves itself to be a real gem, and with DVDs and VHS tapes today, one can collect these gems.

Two that stand out are the "Firefly" and "Jericho" series. Besides the fact that the scripting is excellent, the casts work so well with each other and the stories, and the storylines are solid, I love these two series for the other things, some of which aren't politically correct or chic, that are woven into the stories.

The writing may have been on the wall from the beginning of the ill-fated second season of Jericho. CBS only ordered 7 episodes after barely renewing hit show and gave it little to no chance to succeed. Regardless, this didn’t stop the writers and actors from creating one of the best series of the year.

Back in the heyday of broadcast TV, viewers could come home after work, enjoy dinner, then sit back, relax and enjoy that night's shows with family and friends. But these days, viewers are taking extreme measures in using new technologies like the DVR, VOD, DVD and PPV to try to hold on to the TV experience of days gone by.

Posted by GenPatton43.

Source: Save Jericho Again.

This has been the overriding topic since the commercial campaign was completed and began airing. If you count the time before the show was officially canceled, when rangers started planning for the worst, its been over three months now of rigorous campaigning. Ideas proposed and a lot of downright hard work. As the time passed, we began to receive less and less official info regarding the status of talks between Paramount/CBS and potential investors. By all accounts, this adds to the frustration level greatly. It effects me just as much as any of you, but you can work through it. Should new ideas and concepts be proposed and developed? Sure, without a doubt, its the back bone of our existence and how we have come to survive this long. So make sure you keep your letters flowing to Paramount, to COMCAST. Its simple, its cheap and it takes little time to accomplish. But we also need to catch our breath. In such a short time frame, we have accomplished more than I think we thought we could have when this all began.

"TV Show for Sale" it said on its white plaque and on the board holding the plaque up, it said "Network Needed, Fans Will Follow" or something like that, I'm quoting from memory. Jericho - The Second Season

Review by Gino Sassani.

Because I was fairly certain I would be asked to review this second season of Jericho, I did not watch any of the episodes as they aired. With the writer’s strike many shows were going through problems, and I guess I wanted to see how it all shook loose. So, I watched very little of anything from the networks for fear of being stranded in the middle of a compelling story. Now, before the Jericho fans out there devise any plans to have me roasted along with their next batch of nuts, let me assure you I am not a monitored watcher and participated in no survey. They tend to shy away from us critic types. Something about the deodorant we tend to wear, I think. So I had nothing to do with the ultimate demise of your show; in fact, I’ve become a fan.

Jericho: The Second Season

Review by Brian Tallerico.

Source: The Deadbolt.

Was it worth it? Was all the drama and nut mailing (go look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about) worth losing your favorite show only seven episodes later? The sad fact is that a loyal niche audience is not enough to keep a show afloat and the ratings for Jericho simply didn't warrant renewal. The adoration for this show among the hardcore devotees was remarkable. There were message boards, blogs, and fan sites for nearly every episode and it seemed like maybe, just maybe, the love from the few would translate to a hit for the many. But the noble effort just didn't pay off and CBS pulled the plug again after only seven episodes.

OK, so perhaps the future of Jericho is not as doomed as I may have thought, as producers of the twice-cancelled post-apocalyptic conspiracy thriller have not thrown in the towel and are apparently trying to resurrect the show. Another season on CBS is pretty much off the table, so they’re looking at doing some kind of a deal with either a cable net or through the same kind of convoluted deal that DirectTV cooked up with NBC ro bring back Friday Night Lights (which would air on DirecTV’s entertainment channel “The 101” several months before airing on NBC).

An alternate ending should help sell Jericho: The Second Season. The DVD, coming out Tuesday, hints at where the CBS drama might have gone in a third season. The finale that aired tied up the plot. The other fade-out plops Robert Hawkins (Lennie James) in a far bleaker place.

JERICHO - FANS STILL TRYING

Posted by Sandra.

Source: The Zocalo.

JERICHO fans are continuing their campaign to bring the show back by
sponsoring more than 200 local ad spots to air on cable TV stations in
the Los Angeles area. The group, dubbed the "Jericho Rangers," has
already purchased a print ad in Variety and rented a billboard in
downtown Los Angeles to show their support for the series and help
find it a new broadcast home. The group paid for the advertising time
through a fundraising campaign which generated more than $6,000 in the
past three weeks. The fan-created 30-second ad features a voiceover
provided by actor Brad Beyer, who played Stanley Richmond on the show.
It's scheduled to air for 10 days, beginning June 12th, during several
popular cable shows, including Ghost Hunters on SCI FI Channel and
Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel. The ad will also be hosted
at the group's official site, www.SaveJerichoAgain.com. JERICHO was
cancelled for the first time last year after one season. CBS brought
it back for seven more episodes in early 2008 in response to the
efforts of fans, who sent in bags of nuts in support of the show.
After the new episodes earned lackluster ratings, CBS decided not to
renew the show for fall.

HTF DVD REVIEW: Jericho: The Second Season

Review by Matt H.

Source: Home Theater Forum.

There have been television series which were canceled after their initial seasons, were resurrected over the summer, and then came back for successful network runs (two that come to mind immediately are The Dick Van Dyke Show and Cagney and Lacey, both ironically on CBS). Jericho got a reprieve of its own after being canceled at the conclusion of its first season due to an overwhelming fan reaction to the news of its cancellation. Alas, despite fashioning an outstanding set of second season episodes, CBS was not forthcoming with a renewal, and the seven episodes that constitute the second season of this often riveting apocalyptic drama put a definite period to the end of a truly fascinating saga

When fans of television shows everywhere strike back, my suggestion to these network television executives and major studio honchos would be to run for the hills, or barricade themselves into their cushy offices and hide in some corner waving the white flag of surrender, as television as we know in North American is about to be reclaimed by the fans, the way it should have been from the very beginning.

2008 Fall Sci-Fi - CBS

Posted by Fred.

Source: Film Fodder.

CBS has turned its back on the Sci-Fi community.

Most of us are still mourning the loss of "Jericho" and "Moonlight" (and I'll post an update on *that* show early next week). They seem to think the public doesn't appreciate our favored genre (and, evidently, have never heard of "Lost"), so their lineup consists of standard dramas with a few 'genre-lite' shows sprinkled in. By that, I mean that the Sci-Fi elements are simple and non-challenging - there won't be spaceships, time travel or aliens found here!

Survivors Series by Dalek Creator Returning to TV

Article by John Scott Lewinski.

Source: Wired Blog Network.

Just weeks before the Daleks are scheduled to return to the BBC to wrap up the current season of Doctor Who, another sci-fi series conceived by their creator is returning to TV.

Terry Nation's Survivors originally ran from 1975 to 1977 while Nation was still writing the occasional Dalek script for Doctor Who. Set in the present day, the sci-fi drama was a predecessor to post-apocalyptic shows like Jericho. The program's titular characters lived in the aftermath of a devastating virus that wiped out their friends, families and most of the world's population.
