DVD Box Set Review: The First Season of Jericho will Have You Hooked

Review by Dominick Evans.

Source: Literary Illusions.

I had heard the television commercials announcing Jericho, though I’d never paid that much attention to them. I have never been a huge television watcher on the CBS station. I have always been more loyal to ABC. My mom is an ABC Soap fanatic. We watch ABC News both locally and nationally, and when it came to television shows, it seemed more logical to watch ABC. I was more likely to catch a preview of an ABC show so I knew more about what was on television. I now realize the error of my ways and I owe it all to Jericho.

What would you do if many of the major cities in the United States were hit by nuclear bombs and your town descended into darkness as everyone lost power and communication with the outside world? That’s the premise of the hit television show, Jericho. Taking place in the fictional town of Jericho, Kansas, the citizens of this small town become aware of some major attack when they spot a mushroom cloud in the distance from what they believe is the city of Denver. They must first deal with fallout and then figure out how to survive with no ability to contact the outside world (by conventional means).

The walls of 'Jericho'

Article by Anthony C. Lobaido.

Source: WorldNetDaily.

Not since they sold the New York Yankees to George Steinbrenner has CBS hit such a home run while swinging blindfolded. "Jericho" is a cultural phenomenon that inspires the imagination and brings tears of joy in more than a few episodes. Almost single handedly, the writers and producers of "Jericho" have restored at least a small measure of confidence in what network TV actually could be – moral, intelligent, family-oriented and visionary

Hey! Nielsen--What's the Metric?

Article by Eleanor Baird.

Source: Convergence Culture Consortium.

Nielsen, the media rating giant, recently launched www.heynielsen.com, a site where anyone with an internet connection can set up a profile and comment on TV, movies, web sites, personalities and music. What makes this different from the millions of fan sites and blogs already online is that - it's well, Nielsen, a name that carries a fair bit of clout - but also that it's using data from its other properties, Billboard.com, HollywoodReporter.com and BlogPulse.com to develop the Hey! Nielsen Score which, according to the website, is "a real-time indicator of a topic's impact, influence, and value". Rather than deliver a single number and ranking, I will argue that the site's purpose is ultimately less obvious and more strategic.

One Week Later: Hey! Nielsen Reflections

Article by Myles McNutt.

Source: Cultural Learnings.

Okay, so this is jumping the gun on the week part a little, but the television week has essentially come to a close as of today. With it comes the end of a hectic and exciting public beta launch of Hey! Nielsen, where Television, Movies, Internet Sites and Celebrities are lauded, criticized and given a rating defining their popularity. It has been a week of growing pains, “spamming,” and a whole host of issues (good and bad) rising to the surface.

Spare the Jericho, Spoil the 'Kid Nation'

Article by Jon Lachonis.

Source: Buddy TV.

Kid Nation slipped strongly from its premiere this week. Down into the single digits as a matter of fact. A trend that will surely only continue in the weeks to come. This week it was a 9, next week probably a 7. Surprisingly, despite it's limited demographic appeal, a lot of critics, myself included, passed over Kid Nation as the possibility for the first canceled show of the season. It may have been one of the most missed predictions of the season. Nobody wants to see the children cry – no really, we don't want to see that – but it may be time for the tykes to pack it up. And, what better time to bring back Jericho.

"A victim is often the target of angry outbursts, sarcasm, or cool indifference. The abuser's reaction to these actions is frequently cloaked in a "What's wrong with you?" attitude. She is accused of "making a mountain out of a molehill." Over time she loses her balance and equilibrium and begins to wonder if she is the one who is crazy."

Jericho - The Complete First Season DVD Review

Article by Jason Van Horn and Christopher Monfette.

Source: IGN.

Contrary to what the band R.E.M might once have sung about, the end of the world doesn't start with earthquakes, birds and snakes, or an aeroplane (correct spelling mind you), and if you want to know why Lenny Bruce is not afraid, you better Google the man for yourself. Because in Jericho - both the name of the series and the town in which it takes place - it all starts with Jake rolling into the town, followed by the subsequent mushroom clouds off in the distance, signaling the beginnings of a nuclear attack, and the end of the American way of life as we know it.

'Jericho' fan rescue touted

Article by Josef Adalian.

Source: Variety.

There's something a little nutty about the way CBS Home Entertainment is tubthumping next month's DVD release of "Jericho."
Usually, studios like to overhype a skein's performance in order to sell the DVD, bragging about its status as, say, the No. 1 show among left-handed women aged 18-24. The Eye, however, has decided to embrace "Jericho's" recent near-death experience.

A soon-to-launch print ad campaign for the Oct. 2 release urges consumers to "Save It Again... on DVD." It's a not-so-subtle reference to the fact that fan support helped rescue the show from cancellation.

TV builds safety Net in online world

Two series' success stories in the online world last season may dictate what shows networks decide to put on their schedules in the future.

Buy a link hereNBC's "Heroes," bolstered by elaborate online content such as an Internet comic book charting the adventures of the show's characters, became one of the season's most popular hits.

And CBS' post-apocalyptic saga "Jericho," initially canceled because of low ratings late in the season, was resurrected thanks not only to an online campaign to bring the show back, but by network executives' astonishment at the depth of the passion of fans in online message boards.

TV series: Jericho

Article by Julio M. Merino Vidal.

Source: The Julipedia.

Just finished watching Jericho's first season, aired during the summer on the Spanish Tele 5 channel. What an incredible drama show! It has all ingredients to keep you hooked: well balanced characters, good acting and scenery, lots of action and, of course, a good dose of suspense (OK, not as much as in Lost, but that's exaggerate).

Jericho's saviour is just plain nuts

Article by Joel Rubinoff.

Source: The Record (Canada)

In the end, the fate of Jericho (8 p.m. on CBS) -- the post-apocalyptic drama about a small Kansas community struggling for survival after a nuclear blast -- came down to nuts.

"NUTS!" yelped prodigal son Jake (Skeet Ulrich) in last season's finale, echoing a famous Second World War general when ordered to surrender his beloved town to menacing outsiders.

"NUTS!" yelped fans incensed when CBS announced the series cancellation after a midseason ratings dip, promptly sending 20 tonnes of the fatty snack treats to network brass as a spirited protest measure.

Challenging Reality: Jericho Jinx

Posted Rich Becker.

Source: Copywrite Ink.

The first to feel the sting was Mark Burnett’s failed reality series, Pirate Master. The show ended with a whimper on Aug. 28. The final episode aired online, more than a month after CBS had yanked the first program to be targeted by Jericho fans.

Now, Kid Nation, which is CBS’s second attempt to put up a new reality show, this time into the 8 p.m. Wednesday timeslot, is at risk of becoming an advertising ghost town, according to Advertising Age.

Jericho: One If By Land recap

Posted by Amy Vernon.

Source: Remote Access.

Today we have a return engagement by guest blogger Kay. She was one of our first volunteers for the Great Jericho Blogging Experiment.

We revisit our hero, Jake, as he is being interrogated by Constantino — and threatening harm to Eric doesn’t sway Jake’s refusal to give up Hawkins’ name. He’s taken back to his cell to find those threats are not idle — Eric has been worked over by the sheriff’s thugs. Eric looks Jake over, “Looks like they went easy on you…”

Chris Kramer to Join Jericho

Article by Amber.

Source: Watching Jericho.

In other casting news, Chris Kramer has signed onto CBS’ Jericho. He will be playing Chavez, an old friend of Robert Hawkins (Lennie James).

An old friend of Hawkins? My first question is he an old friend like Sarah was an old friend, or could he might possibly be someone on the “White Hat” side of Hawkins’ past? What do you think?

Going Green - using rechargeable batteries

Article by Philip W. Palmer.

Source: The Sound Cart.

This season of Jericho I decided to try and cut down on my waste of one use alkaline and lithum batteries. We would go through a bucket of batteries every couple of weeks under normal operation. The wireless transmitters, IFB receivers, sync boxes, TC slates and many other items all use 9 volt and AA batteries. So I have given it a try and I am very pleased with the results.

'Jericho' DVD Sales Volume Low

Article by Jon Lachonis.

Source: Buddy TV.

Jericho's stalwart fans are on the right track by pushing for DVD sales, but the show has yet to significantly push the needle. With fans hoping to bolster the shows viewer ship by launching initiatives to purchase Jericho's first season for friends and family, the show is lagging far behind on its contemporaries in terms of pre-orders. Lost).

Jericho has succeeded in telling an interesting, conspiratorial story full of meaningful subtext, but it did not bridge into the science fiction tinged mentality that some expected it would when the series started out. Those are the fans that typically put more emphasis on owning a memento of the show, as evidenced by Heroes current number 2 position on Amazon's best selling DVD list.

May I present to you my favorite TV critic in the world?

Jericho Takes a Beating in Ratings

Posted by staff.

Source: Jericho Blog.

So we all know Jericho was canceled and then revived by CBS. And in an effort to bring in new viewers, CBS is airing re-runs of the show at 9pm each Friday evening. The only problem is they are not marketing it again, and apparently from this past week’s ratings, no one is watching. Here is what Media Life Magazine had to say about the ratings:

Who Are the Bad Guys on Jericho, Battlestar Galactica?

Article by MaryAnn Johanson.

Source: Film.com.

Used to be, if you were a character in a popular TV show or movie, you knew who the bad guys were. They wore black hats, or they spoke with a funny accent or perhaps had a skin color different from yours, or their philosophies could be boiled down to "Smash! Grab!" Now? Sheesh. The bad guys are hidden all around you. They look just like you ... partly because the good guys also sometimes wear black hats or speak with funny accents or have a different skin color from yours. The bad guys blend in. And they're complicated. Hell, sometimes, these days, you can't even be sure if the bad guys are the bad guys at all. Maybe you're the bad guy. Maybe you aren't -- but it's easy to see why the guys you think are bad believe that they're the good guys, and you're the bad.

So much for mindless entertainment. This is enough to make your head spin.

Trapper kindly agreed. Here's an interesting look at Jericho from a German fan.

Raising the dead: Fans unite online to save shows

Article by Randy Cordova of Teh Arizona Republic.

Source: Azcentral.

CBS canceled the freshman sci-fi drama Jericho this year. The move met with an outcry from fans that was, quite literally, nutty.

It worked. The network changed its mind and the show is scheduled to return next year.

Fans campaigning to save their favorite series is not a recent phenomenon. But in this Internet-savvy age, expect to see it happen more often, and with more possibilities of success.
